solution to the thin/light CM fonts problem (slightly OT)
Hi, With help from the tex-fonts list, I think I have a solution to the problem that I'd written about earlier - that is, that the computer modern fonts are thin when printed on low-res printers (not a fault of the font, that's how they are meant to be). But, it's possible to tweak the modes.mf file and change the default device settings that the metafont program uses to generate fonts.. thus by changing the "blacker" option, it's possible to generate fonts which are thicker. I just generated the cmr12 font using the metafont program after tweaking the modes.mf file and with the new fonts, the output that tex produces looks really good with my 600 dpi laser printer. If anyone would like further info, I'd be glad to be of service.. since this is not per se LyX-related we could take the discussion offline... Thanks, nirmal
Solution for Hungarians!
Dear My Fellows Hungarians (and others strange guys planning to edit Hungarian text in LyX), Let me share with you how you can configure Linux + LyX in order to get proper functioning with Hungarian text. Here is the problem: 1) If you install Linux (I have experience about Red Hat 7.2) with default language En, then you will have the following problems: a) Assume you get a Hu winword doc file from people using MS Windows. When open it with Star Office the letters with Hungarian accent (\H{o} and \H{u} in TeX notation) are missed. b) In some editors (like Star Office) keyboard keys corresponding to these characters do not work. c) In LyX (1.1.6fix4 or 1.2pre4) you cannot enter these Hungarian characters into the search/replace window of LyX. (the keys do not work in that window). 2) Now, if you install Linux with default language (and kbd) Hu, then all above problems disappear, but a new problem appears: d) You cannot enter a into the search/replace window of LyX, because pressing LyX starts performing the "replace all" command (be careful!!!). Here is the solution of the problem: A) Install Linux with default language Hu. B) Do not use rpm files for installing LyX. C) Install LyX from the source files, but use ./configure --disable-nls In this way LyX will be installed in English (but still understands the Hu keyboard!) D) Then in Edit > Preferences Screen Fonts Encoding chose iso8859-2 In this way, all of the above problems a)-d) are solved simultaneously. Best, Laszlo E. Szabo -- Laszlo E. protected space is not printed in lyx-code
Hi, In part of my article class document, I inserted a c++ source code. I use insert -> ascii as lines. Then I blocked all the inserted code, and choose lyx-code in the environment. The inserted code, somehow, has the protected space all over the place. So the formatting layout looks right in Lyx. But when I viewed using postcript, it looks like to me that the protected space is not printed as space. Only regular space, which you can use multiple in the lyx-code environemtn, is printed correctly. I am thinking to do search and replace to replace the protected space with regular space, but how do I do that ? Any workaround in this? Thanks a lot for any help. Reuben D. Budiardja

Currency Symbol
Hi, Forgive me if this is a rather elementary question. I use LyX to produce letters in Welsh and have been doing so for some time. Recently I decided to modify (by copying and modifying) the g-brief-en class to give me better formatted output. This went more or less without a hitch, given my level of knowledge of TeX, LaTeX etc - i.e. none. However I am left with one problem. The currency symbol in my letters now prints as the Lira symbol instead of the GP Pound (sterling) symbol (£). The GBP symbol appears on the screen, but the Lira symbol appears in the output. Does anyone know if this is a problem with the g-brief-en class: or have I messed with something I shouldn't? The original class also prints the Lira symbol - but I may have inadvertently changed something during my investigations. Either way, is there any way I can get the GBP symbol to work with this class? Many thanks Peter
compose key doesn't work with LyX-1.2.0pre4
Arghh! The compose key, which worked perfectly with earlier versions of LyX, does not work with Lyx-1.2.0pre4 [Sparc-Solaris-8, xforms-89.6]. I'd appreciate help or suggestions on getting this to work. Thanks, -- Ronald Florence www.18james.com
LyX-1.2.0pre4 key bindings
I keep discovering stubborn key-bindings in LyX-1.2.0pre4: - M-d is bound to "word-delete-forward" in emacs.bind, which I use. It worked fine in earlier versions of LyX, but in LyX-1.2.0pre4, pressing M-d opens the Documents menu and changes the cursor to =>. - I have bound M-v to "screen-up". Again, this worked fine in earlier versions of LyX, but in Lyx-1.2.0pre4, pressing M-v opens the View menu and changes the cursor to =>. I couldn't find anyplace in the bind files where M-v and M-d were bound to those menus. Old typing habits die hard, especially for an emacs/xemacs user. I'd welcome suggestions on how to get these key bindings to work correctly. Thanks, -- Ronald Florence www.18james.com
