Study carefully what shows up in the console when you do the Edit/Reconfigure ... that usually signals what is going wrong, if there are errors. Without knowing more about what happened when you tried things the "unix" way, it's hard to be more precise dac

bug in reconfigure (windows port)
I use lyx port in a windows xp. After some itchy corrections (like learn the precise version of imagemagick that works, avoiding spaces in directory names and the like), I found an almost terminal problem. Lyx worked QUITE fine -- we built a monography just with it -- but I was not able to add any more latex class to lyx using the unix procedure (add class to tetex, add .layout file to lyx, Edit/ Reconfigure. Finally today I have found that executing configure.bat and then configure in a console of windows, lyx reconfigure its latex entry (which has let me use beamer, i.e.) Do you people know if it is really a bug for windows port? I mean, I'm starting to be a lyx apostle, but if, hum, a luser has to do a lot of tricks like the one I mentioned above, it sounds to be hard to achieve conversions.
Changing Font
I have a very large lyx document that is currently set to use the 'default' font (if you go into layout->document->layout, the font is set to 'default'). I'm guessing this is a mixture of Times Roman fonts and something else. I need to have a font where the majority of the book is not Times Roman, but is Garamond. Is this possible? Dear All I am not sure whether the following is a bug: I have pasted a piece of a LyX document whose language was set to be German (actually, it was an example done by Herbert) into a document whose language is not German; when I perform a spell-checking of my document, LyX tries to do the spell-checking with the German dictionary, which obviously does not find in my computer. I should add that German is not selected as the spell-checker language (in my LyX configuration). Thanks in advance, Paul

I am using OS X 10.3.5? Strange, I tried to double-click on the files again, and it just opened the FontBook, and no "install font" option. Not even if I remove a font, and then double-click on the font file. But the first time I tried it opened the FontBook, and previewed the font, and there was a "install font" button. Sorry, I have no good explanation -- I'm not a MacOS expert. /Peter I had previously fooled around with these fonts in FontBook, so that is probably why I do not get the install option. Thanks. Steve

Hi again, Relating the KDE upgrade + accents issue, I've installed this RPM for FC2: lyx-1.3.5-1fc2_qt.i386.rpm And no success with accents issue. Then, I've installed the XForms RPM: lyx-1.3.5-1fc2_xforms.i386.rpm And all accents issues have been *solved*. So it seems an issue with QT libraries. Tha landscape/portrait setting in xfig may be important as well. Even if it's grayed when you export to eps or pdf, I always take care to set to portrait, as I think that an individual figure should always be presented as it is (this option does not exist, the portrait/landscape is there for printing purpose, not for graphic component manipulation). The interpretation of landscape orientation in PDF is ambiguous in fact, and I come often across PDF documents which include both formats (exported from documents which allow such thing to happen), which cannot be printed correctly. I think that *visual* documents with alternating portrait and landscape pages are OK, but they *should* be exported in a printable document (or the printing tool *should* understand the situation). I suspect that you are using the Graphics inset, because the external_templates file shipped with LyX 1.3.x does not handle pdflatex conversion at all. It all comes down to what converter you use to define the conversion from .fig to .pdf. You can probably wrap the native fig2dev call in a shell script to also rotate the generated pdf file. there is no definition of \btxpagelong ...
Delete this command in your bibfile or
you can try with \def\btxpagelong{}
in the preamble, but this makes only the doc run,
but doesn't solve the problem.

The message above is output by the latex compiler, not by lyx. Go
into the tmp/lyxtmp.../lyx_tmpbuf0 directory where you'll find the
failing .tex file and try and run latex 'by hand' on it. The .log
file should tell yo more.

I have now tried two distributions (knoppix debian, and suse linux)
and tried to install the newest lyx version and I still have problems
to get the bibtex in my lyx document to work and I did not find any
resuorces on the web concerning these problems, please help me:
If I use a library style like "plain" lyx parses the file without errors
but in the output are two mistakes: In the text every citation has a
(author?) remark and in the citation index some titles are switched to
lower case letters (this is a crucial problem if you have some german
titles!).
When I try a different style like "gerplan" lyx does not parse the file:
"30 errores appeared, you should try to fix them". The errors all look
like thisone:

Hi Uwe, I cannot speak about Windows because I'm on MacOs/XDarwin (that is, I use LyX for Mac (Qt), but I use htlatex and OpenOffice from XDarwin). On my system it was actually rather trivial. I installed TeX4ht with fink, and OpenOffice from their installer. fink didn't ask to install any supplementary package, so I guess zip had been installed already (I have a full Linux-like system installed via fink). The conversion from Latex to OpenOffice took just one command: htlatex filename "xhtml,ooffice" " -cmozhtf" " -coo" (It took me a while to figure out the right command, because the instructions on the webpage were a bit ambiguous. I talked with the developer of TeX4ht and he has posted a bugfix already. Hurrah for open source!) That was it. The .sxw file was fine and perfectly readable by OpenOffice. The output from OpenOffice, in turn, was read into Word with no problems. However, I don't use images, and cannot comment on that either. My main problem was how to convert into Word a LyX file that uses Jurabib for the references (and therefore requires several LaTex runs to be processed). The book "The LaTex Web companion" may also help--I checked it out and has a lot of gory details on how htlatex works, including the various passes, the configuration files, etc. But perhaps there is a problem with your installation of the package? I can send you my file if you'd like to test it on your system.
