Thanks a lot guys. I guess it is an issue with the package I'm using
or it is something with my machine.

Are you talking about horizontal spacing, similar to the spacing between
words, or vertival spacing such as the spacing between paragraphs?

Latex tries hard to fit whole undivided paragraphs on the pages, and will
stretch or compress vertical spacing in order to achieve this. This means
that the spacing between paragraphs of text, the spacing between headings and
text, and the spacing above or below display math may vary a good deal. The
alternative is substantially worse: small paragraphs split across pages,
a single line ending a paragraph on the next page, or a heading at the very
end of a page.

  With regard to what? AFAIK there's no requirement for a book to have

Book without parts

2005-01-02 Thread Steve Litt
Hi all,

I'm contemplating writing a book with 17 chapters and no parts. In other
words, the highest level of the book is the chapter. I'd like to use the book
document class because this is a book (expected to run around 150 pages), and
because I have a lot of experience with the book class.

Any ideas?

Re: problems order of references with bibtex

But it does not work, that means - no error, but also no change!
it is still

the same goes for:
1992 is before 1988 (see below)
Any other suggestions ?

within my bib file to solve this. I'm not sure where I found how to do
this but a quick google for "noopsort bibtex" produces a lot of pages
which should help.

I needed to use it to force the order of these two references:
@article{Ward:1,
year = {1999},
volume = {26},
pages = {561-570},
author = {Ingrid A. K. Ward and Piers Larcombe and P.
{\noopsort{a}}Veth},
title = {A new process-based Model for Wreck Site Formation},
journal = {Journal of Archaeological Science}
}

@article{Ward:2,
volume = {26},
author = {Ingrid A. K. Ward and Piers Larcombe and Richard
Brinkman and Robert M. Carter},
pages = {41-53},
number = {1},
journal = {Journal of Field Archaeology},
title = {Sedimentary Processes and the {P}andora Wreck, {G}reat
Barrier Reef, {A}ustrailia.},
year = {1999}
}

In this instance the bibtex sort order was based on the third authors
Surname. However, the noopsort command prevents this.

Sorry to be so vague but I hope that gives you at least a pointer in
the right direction.
it should be (see below):
Oldenbürger1981 -> 2002
Oldenbürger2004a -> 2004e
but it comes as:
Oldenbürger2004a
Oldenbürger2004b
Oldenbürger1981 -> 2002
Oldenbürger2004c -> 2004d
Thus, 2004a and 2004b are out of order. The same goes for
Oldenbürger et al 1988 -> 1992, but it appears as 1992 and then only 1988.
Any suggestions to fix that ??
Thanks a lot,
best wishes
Leo

Then please ask some gentoo experts. If we don't know what is going on we
can't help you very much.

You only need to do that if you plan to modify cua.bind. This has nothing
to do with your problem, the bind files define keyboard shortcuts and not
the toolkit that is used for the GUI.

Yousef, LyX can be compiled with either frontend but not with both. You
have a version that was compiled with the XForms frontend. If you want a
version compiled with the Qt frontend, then you'll either need to grab it
from some (unknown to me) gentoo archive or you'll have to grab the LyX
sources and build it yourself. As Rich says, this should be as simple as

$ ./configure --with-frontend=qt
$ make

but you'll need the Qt header files to be installed on you machine too.
Plus a bunch of other stuff.

Anyway, I hope that this makes the position clearer.

Happy New Year,
Angus
