So put that ERT in some normal text instead. Perhaps outside the float even,
I'm not sure abut the best place for such things.  But definitely not inside
the caption environment.

Well, I need to write a letter in the folowing 
format:

From the top to the middle of the page in a single
column;
From the middle of the page to toe botton in three
columns.


Is it possible without using Tex script or table?

Nope, I fear.

1) Insert the following command in the preamble 
(Layout-Document-Preamble):
   \usepackage{multicol}

2) Write the first (top) part of Your letter.

3) After this part, insert an ERT (Insert-ERT) with the following 
content: \begin{multicols}{3} and close the ERT. Continue writing 
_after_ the ERT-box.

4) Finish using columns by entering the another ERT with the content 
\end{multicols}.

Inserting Accented Characters easily?

Is there a trick to inserting accented characters? I just copied in
the chars I needed but it got tedious keeping track of all those
different accented chars after a while. Sorry if it's a dumb question
but I might just be missing something very obvious...

close (the space between the body text and the
foot-notes)!

What class do you like best to fill beautifully the
document?
