inserting cross references

For the 100th time I trapped myself, and now I am getting annoyed.

I want to insert a cross reference, so I go insert-cross reference - and a
the menu of labels popups.

Next, I locate the cross-reference I want to insert in the list, and
double-click it.

That does not insert the cross-reference, but jumps to the label!!! This is
not the expected behaviour, especially since inserting citation references
works by double-clicking the reference of choice in the list.

Somebody, please reconsider this!

Language spec. changes caption settings?

Hi,
I have this .cls file that defines the figure captions to start with 
Fig. instead of Figure. Running the file using LaTeX, the output is 
correct, but when using LyX, the full word is used instead of the 
abbreviation.


This behaviour occurs since the latex output generated by LyX is 
slightly different from the original LaTeX file. LyX writes 
\documentclass[onesided,english]{ifacmtg} where the original sample 
contains just \documentclass{ifacmtg}. (Quoting Paul Rubin. Many 
thanks!) It seems the additional language option triggers the use of the 
full word instead of the abbreviation.


One could export to latex, edit that file and then run latex. But it 
would be nice not have to do that. So...

1. Is there away to avoid adding the options? ([onesided,english])
2. Why do these options force the use of the full word instead of the 
abbreviation?
3. Are there any other ways to change the figure caption from Figure 
to Fig.? (preferrably without having to edit the .cls file.)

I am pretty sure that there is another difference: \usepackage{babel}

 contains just \documentclass{ifacmtg}. (Quoting Paul Rubin. Many

I don't know of any.

It is probably only the option english, together with the babel package.

You can write something like this in the preamble (untested):

% redefine \figurename after babel is loaded
\AtBeginDocument{\def\figurename{Fig.}}

The best option IMO would be to make the .cls file babel aware.

it is _always_ safe to use c:\texmf or c:\localtexmf for the
TeX files, which is also the MikTeX default. And personally
bst files should always go into c:\localtexmf\bibtex\bst\

This is more or less above my head (and no time to digest it all) so 
please excuse this if wrong or inappropriate, but I am using the 
subfigure package to do almost the same thing thing.

Choose the one-half option in Layout-Document-Layout-Line spacing. 
Then put the cursor into each quotation and use 
Layout-Paragraph-General-Line spacing to select single spacing for 
the quote.


If you have a lot of quotes, you might want to bind the command 
paragraph-spacing single to a keyboard shortcut.


I'm not sure, but it might be possible to hack a layout file to set 
single spacing for Quote or Quotation environments regardless of the 
global spacing option.

report at bugzilla.lyx.org

I was actually planning to. The problem is that the binary I  
created did not appear to be self-contained (at least it didn't  
work when I moved it to another computer). If there are  
instructions on how to create a self-standing binary I'd be happy  
to give it a try.


There are instructions, but for some reason they were omitted from  
1.4.0-pre3. Also, the LyX.app skeleton distributed with 1.4.0-pre3 is  
incomplete, and I'm a bit surprised you got it to work (unless you  
installed into another version of LyX.app).


What might explain the non-portability of the LyX.app you created is  
that you created it on one version of OS X and tried to move it to an  
earlier version.


Apart from that the file is huge (40 MB zipped), but that's not a  
problem with enough bandwidth. I guess it is due to debugging code.


Yes. You can strip it by doing make install-strip from within the  
lyx source directory.

Note the following:

* The LyX-1.4.0 file format has changed, so that files saved with  
LyX-1.4.0 may not be readable by LyX-1.3.

will not be compatible with LyX-1.4.0.


* I am confident (but not sure) that this version will run on at  
least OS X 10.3.9 and greater. I hope it will run on 10.2, though I  
am not confident. If you have access to machines running 10.2 or  
10.3.x, please let me know what your experiences are.

I do have lots of quotes and I'd like to use a consistent style throughout.
I've come across the  setspace.sty package, and also this:

  {\endlist\end{spacing}\noindent\hspace{-0.333em}}
\makeatother

but being a newbie, I don't understand which one should be used in what 
circumstances. To clarify, I need all the text to be 1.5 spaced, except 
for the quotes (and footnotes), which should be single spaced (and with 
a smaller font).

Since the .bst file (downloaded from a Journal's website) is only
needed for a paper I am writing, it makes sense to put it along with
the paper. Also, it is troublesome, and sometimes not allowed, to put

As an ordinary user I was able to add test.bst to 
C:\localtexmf\bibtex\bst (but not C:\local texmf\bibtex\bst) 
and testbst.bst to C:\texmf\bibtex\bst with Windows Explorer.


Then I ran Miktex Options, Refresh.
Then LyX Reconfigure. Close Lyx and reopen.
I still had to run Rescan (with show directories checked) to see them.

I would say that is troublesome, but ordinarily allowed. 
It seems to me your solution should have worked if you stored 
the lyx file and the .bst file under C:\My_Journal_Papers but not

C:\My Journal Papers because then the tex-engine has to traverse
a path with spaces to get to the .bst file. TeX sees every space
as an end of file so it would just truncate/read C:\My   although 
C:\My Journal Papers should work though, if the .bst file is under 
(local)texmf because only the lyx file for the paper is behind space.


I spent two hours on Google searching   path spaces problem 
and found that it used to apply to Firefox for example, but
no explanation at all describing the various contexts the problem 
crops up in. And I read that spaces are harder to put into a

Windows script than a *nix script!

When one considers that TeXLive2004 did not have a Windows
installer (a couple of very poor attempts were made) because one
guy, Fabrice Popineau, was unavailable, and the TeX User Group
has dozens of more developers to draw on than LyX, then the
Angus LyX1.3.6 Windows port is seen as quite an accomplishment.

For me, a typical someone who hasn't actually overcome certain 
WinLyx porting hurdles, it is difficult to evaluate how much effort it 
would take to provide a certain return for the time invested or even

estimate the amount of time it would take. Just once in 1.3.6 I tried
to change the postscript viewer from gsview to Adobe Pro which
was installed behind C:\program files and another directory with
spaces. I was writing an absolute path for the viewer application. It
took me only three hours to get the s and \ correct for the one line.

or DVI they are not included (as I expect).


When I choose File - Export - ASCII then they are included in the 
resulting .txt file.


How can I stop my comments from being outputted?

I am not sure what converter is used for this. (I don't see in my 
preferences.)

LyX-1.4.0 may not be readable by LyX-1.3.

* I am confident (but not sure) that this version will run on at  
least OS X 10.3.9 and greater. I hope it will run on 10.2, though I  
am not confident. If you have access to machines running 10.2 or  
10.3.x, please let me know what your experiences are.

I do have lots of quotes and I'd like to use a consistent style throughout.
I've come across the  setspace.sty package, and also this:

\makeatother

but being a newbie, I don't understand which one should be used in what 
circumstances. To clarify, I need all the text to be 1.5 spaced, except 
for the quotes (and footnotes), which should be single spaced (and with 
a smaller font).

and testbst.bst to C:\texmf\bibtex\bst with Windows Explorer.


Then I ran Miktex Options, Refresh.
Then LyX Reconfigure. Close Lyx and reopen.
I still had to run Rescan (with show directories checked) to see them.

I would say that is troublesome, but ordinarily allowed. 
It seems to me your solution should have worked if you stored 
the lyx file and the .bst file under C:\My_Journal_Papers but not

C:\My Journal Papers because then the tex-engine has to traverse
a path with spaces to get to the .bst file. TeX sees every space
as an end of file so it would just truncate/read C:\My   although 
C:\My Journal Papers should work though, if the .bst file is under 
(local)texmf because only the lyx file for the paper is behind space.


I spent two hours on Google searching   path spaces problem 
and found that it used to apply to Firefox for example, but
no explanation at all describing the various contexts the problem 
crops up in. And I read that spaces are harder to put into a

Windows script than a *nix script!

When one considers that TeXLive2004 did not have a Windows
installer (a couple of very poor attempts were made) because one
guy, Fabrice Popineau, was unavailable, and the TeX User Group
has dozens of more developers to draw on than LyX, then the
Angus LyX1.3.6 Windows port is seen as quite an accomplishment.

For me, a typical someone who hasn't actually overcome certain 
WinLyx porting hurdles, it is difficult to evaluate how much effort it 
would take to provide a certain return for the time invested or even

estimate the amount of time it would take. Just once in 1.3.6 I tried
to change the postscript viewer from gsview to Adobe Pro which
was installed behind C:\program files and another directory with
spaces. I was writing an absolute path for the viewer application. It
took me only three hours to get the s and \ correct for the one line.

I have a lot of Comments in my lyx document. When I export to postscript 
or DVI they are not included (as I expect).


When I choose File - Export - ASCII then they are included in the 
resulting .txt file.


How can I stop my comments from being outputted?

I am not sure what converter is used for this. (I don't see in my 
preferences.)


I am using lyx 1.3.6.

inserting cross references

For the 100th time I trapped myself, and now I am getting annoyed.

I want to insert a cross reference, so I go insert->cross reference - and a
the menu of labels popups.

Next, I locate the cross-reference I want to insert in the list, and
double-click it.

That does not insert the cross-reference, but jumps to the label!!! This is
not the expected behaviour, especially since inserting citation references
works by double-clicking the reference of choice in the list.

Somebody, please reconsider this!

I have this .cls file that defines the figure captions to start with 
"Fig." instead of "Figure". Running the file using LaTeX, the output is 
correct, but when using LyX, the full word is used instead of the 
abbreviation.


This behaviour occurs since the latex output generated by LyX is 
slightly different from the original LaTeX file. "LyX writes 
\documentclass[onesided,english]{ifacmtg} where the original sample 
contains just \documentclass{ifacmtg}". (Quoting Paul Rubin. Many 
thanks!) It seems the additional language option triggers the use of the 
full word instead of the abbreviation.


One could export to latex, edit that file and then run latex. But it 
would be nice not have to do that. So...

1. Is there away to avoid adding the options? ([onesided,english])
2. Why do these options force the use of the full word instead of the 
abbreviation?
3. Are there any other ways to change the figure caption from "Figure" 
to "Fig."? (preferrably without having to edit the .cls file.)

I am pretty sure that there is another difference: \usepackage{babel}

I don't know of any.

It is probably only the option "english", together with the babel package.

You can write something like this in the preamble (untested):

% redefine \figurename after babel is loaded
\AtBeginDocument{\def\figurename{Fig.}}

The best option IMO would be to make the .cls file babel aware.

it is _always_ safe to use c:\texmf or c:\localtexmf for the
TeX files, which is also the MikTeX default. And personally
bst files should always go into c:\localtexmf\bibtex\bst\

This is more or less above my head (and no time to digest it all) so 
please excuse this if wrong or inappropriate, but I am using the 
subfigure package to do almost the same thing thing.

Choose the one-half option in Layout->Document->Layout->Line spacing. 
Then put the cursor into each quotation and use 
Layout->Paragraph->General->Line spacing to select single spacing for 
the quote.


If you have a lot of quotes, you might want to bind the command 
"paragraph-spacing single" to a keyboard shortcut.


I'm not sure, but it might be possible to hack a layout file to set 
single spacing for Quote or Quotation environments regardless of the 
global spacing option.

I was actually planning to. The problem is that the binary I  
created did not appear to be self-contained (at least it didn't  
work when I moved it to another computer). If there are  
instructions on how to create a self-standing binary I'd be happy  
to give it a try.


There are instructions, but for some reason they were omitted from  
1.4.0-pre3. Also, the LyX.app skeleton distributed with 1.4.0-pre3 is  
incomplete, and I'm a bit surprised you got it to work (unless you  
installed into another version of LyX.app).


What might explain the non-portability of the LyX.app you created is  
that you created it on one version of OS X and tried to move it to an  
earlier version.


Apart from that the file is huge (40 MB zipped), but that's not a  
problem with enough bandwidth. I guess it is due to debugging code.


Yes. You can strip it by doing "make install-strip" from within the  
lyx source directory.
