Windows installation problem
Installing LyX from lyx-143-5.exe on two different Windows machines (XP and Win2000), both resulted in an error, "LyXTextClassList::Read: no textclasses found!", each time it is run. Reinstallation did not resolve the problem. LyX installs and runs flawlessly under Dapper Ubuntu at home. Does anyway know of a solution? Thanks, Ian

LyX-1.4.2 Problems
Hi list, i upgraded to lyx-1.4.2 on my gentoo-linux system using the gentoo-ebuild. Starting to use it i encountered some problems: * The configuration document states that the values of the two shell variables LyxDir and UserDir can be seen in the 'about LyX'-Window of the help dialog. Which is not the case in my LyX. * It is equally stated that the settings for the converters can be modified using the Tools>prferences:Conversion dialog. This dialog does not show up in myx LyX. * In the >>Document >Settings >Bullets window only for First Level there is a selection bar (which can be opened clicking on the little triangle at the right end of the bar) which shows nothing ,-( * To produce special characters (like å, ç, etc.) i defined in a local .xmodmap file 'keycode 66 = Multi_Key' (changing the behaviour of the Caps_Lock key. On the command line and in other programs (as you see here) this works fine. Inside LyX it doesn't. * My Locale is all set to german ('[EMAIL PROTECTED]'). In the ~/.lyx/preferences file i added a line '\bind_file hw_cua' with my personal bindings. I have verified that this hw_cua.bind is used. This file contains a line 'bind_file menus.bind' (which is the english version of the menus). Nevertheless the menus are german which i don't like becuase i got used to the english ones for years now ,-( I'm very eager to restore the LyX environment i'm used to now for some years and which i like very much. So any hint is welcome. LyX is my absolute favorite for producing text documents. Thanks for this great program. Some developers use 64bit machines. There are occasional bug reports of users with a 64 bit OS, but it is unclear whether they have something to do with 64 bit, and we have other unclear reports from users with a 32 bit OS, too. Are you sure that it is only left out of the 64 bit version and is contained in the 32 bit version? Georg

Does LyX work in 64 bit?
Hi all, For some unearthly reason, LyX was left out of the Mandriva 2007 64 bit version. It's been in Mandrake since version 7.x in 2000. Is there something about LyX that it can't be compiled and configured for 64 bit? Thanks SteveT

I tried your suggestion and it works ... except that it breaks the link to the figure which kind of defeats the purpose of using hyperref. I'll check the documentation. Thanks for the suggestion. By "breaks the link to the figure" do you mean splits the link across two lines, keeping it a link (which is what it's supposed to do) or renders the link dysfunctional? My understanding is that it should cause overly long links to be broken across multiple lines, with each fragment of text separately hyperlinked to the same destination. The manual says a couple of things that I find less than translucent: "Allows link text to break across lines; since this cannot be accommodated in PDF, it is only set true by default if the pdftex driver is used. This makes links on multiple lines into different PDF links to the same target." and "The correct value is automatically set according to the driver features. It can be overwritten for drivers that do not support broken links. However, at any case, the link area will be wrong and displaced." The url.sty package has some options to let you control how/where long links are broken, but AFAIK hyperref has only the boolean breaklinks option. Also, oddly enough there isn't a problem with hyperref and memoir under LyX 1.3.7. Maybe this is a 1.4.3 bug. If LyX 1.3.7 generates the right output for your current document (using, presumably, your current LaTeX package), then it might be worth exporting the document from both 1.3.7 and 1.4.3 to LaTeX (or doing View->LaTeX if you've set that up) and comparing both the preambles and the actual link. Hopefully that would pin down what changed. /Paul

However, when I add the hyperref package, any caption longer than one line extends beyond the page as you can see in the attached pdf. I don't see any warnings in Peter's documentation. Does anyone have a suggestion? If not I just won't use the hyperref package, but it is kind of nice. if you use `short title´ with a shorter figure legend, would that help? Wolfgang Bob Lounsbury Yes, I think if I could get a shortened caption in the lof then there would not be a hyperref problem. However, I'm not sure how to do this either. go behind Figure#: [mark] in your float and enter "short title" from Insert (note that it is greyed out if you are either not in the float environment or if their is already a short title). Enter your short title in the red framed box which turns up. (Lyx 1.4.2) Wolfgang This is definitely one solution. It works! Thank you!

Re: Configure output of natbib
I am using natbib to introduce my citations. It happens that when I have a reference for which I have written a 'Note' in the bib file, the note's text is included (together with authors, title, year,...) in the bibliography generated for my document. Is there a way I can prevent this? That is, can I somehow tell LyX/Latex the fields I want to include/not include? Not without writing your own BibTeX style, which you probably do not want to do. But this is the normal and expected behavior: The note field is for additional information to be appended to the bibliographic reference. (See btxdoc.dvi.) If you're not using it for that purpose---if, say, you're using it to add your own notes regarding an article---then what you need to do is use some other field in your BibTeX file. JabRef uses "review" for this purpose, but you can make up your own fields and call it what you wish. And obviously, you can do a search-and-replace on the .bib file to make the change. Lyx Hebrew bugs?
Hi, I have come accross some annoying bugs in writing Hebrew documents. I am using lyx 1.4.3-4 on Windows. 1. Inside a figure float, when writing a hebrew caption, the "Figure #" comes out on the written text (in the lyx display, not on the DVI), so nothing can be understood from the caption. 2. In writing mixed Hebrew English, lyx has trouble understanding when to switch, for example, writing a Hebrew paragraph and stating a number with the English units cm^-1 (the ^-1 is in math mode) is IMPOSSIBLE - the math equation places itself on the left of the numbers. The only working solutions are either to write the entire phrase "345 cm^-1" in an entirely new English paragraph, going back a line and pressing DEL to remove the Enter, or writing the entire thing inside the math equation, taking care of italics and roman fonts (a little tedious). 3. If you move with the arrows forward or backward in the text, the cursor may get stuck inside a math formula and will not go on... This does not happen in an English paragraph, unless (see #4). 4. When I wanted to check item 3 above in an entirely English document, I wrote cm^-1 (the ^-1 in math), and then moving the cursor across the line made the formula disappear!!!. It isn't shown on the display anymore. I have used lyx mostly for English documents, but I have used lyx in Hebrew before in previous versions (1.3.x) and I don't remember these problems. Any input on these is appreciated. Thanks Miki
