I would love to stir it all up again but, in the interests of keeping
people's blood pressure at safe levels, I will simply say that there
were 2 camps:
1. Those (mostly Germanic people) who favoured Licks or Looks
2. The traditionalists who favoured Lick (aspirated so that the screen
becomes rather moist - to quote Donald Knuth re the pronunciation of
TeX)

Struggling with Cross-refs again
Well, I am totally baffled by LyX and LaTeX management of cross references. I cannot get either the LyX command or the \nameref command to produce the correct reference. What happens is that the first pass of LaTeX produces the correct reference, then LyX runs LaTeX again and the reference is changed to an erroneous value. I can actually see this happening in real time if I keep TeXShop open: the document is typeset correctly and then re-typeset with the wrong value. I am enclosing a sample file LyX file below. I suppose I must have misunderstood something very basic in LaTeX referencing system, but rereading the relevant section of the Companion was of no help. Any advice is appreciated. LaTeX Source Documentation
I just discovered this myself and thought it might be useful to some others, so I'm passing it along When I'm trying to figure out how to do something in LaTeX, I have often found it useful to look at the LaTeX source in latex.ltx. (For example, the other day I was digging around in the definitions of sectioning commands to figure out how "*" commands work.) Unfortunately, there is no documentation there, and the source makes for hard reading. I knew the original source would be well documented, but that wasn't included in my distribution. Well, I finally went and found it: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/base/ The source is in the .dtx files (as usual), and they are heavily commented. There are a lot of them that, when processed, together produce latex.ltx, so finding exactly what you want can take some grepping. But the names of these files are actually quite descriptive. E.g., ltfntcmd.dtx---that's an old-school, 8.3 filename for you---contains the code for font commands. What's best of all is that, once you have one of these files, you can LaTeX it (e.g., latex ltfntcmd.dtx) and get a nice DVI file with fully commented source code. By the way, there are other times I've found that documentation is not provided with my distribution. Thus, I do not seem to have documentation for the nameref package. Again, it's easy to find this kind of thing on ctan. Cross-referencing a section's title (not number)
Some time ago I posted a couple of questions about x-refs. I was asking if it is possible to: 1. cross-referencing to a separate file 2. having the section title appear in the cross-referencing document. I have received helpful advice on the first item, but no replies on the second question. Should I infer that it is in fact impossible to do so? I looked into the prettyref package, but it seems to take care of a different problem. Perhaps there are other packages that could be used? Character Styles and LaTeX Commands
I was adding some stuff to the wiki today and decided to add a tip about
how to use endnotes. This got me thinking. If you want all your notes to
be endnotes, then it's easy. But what if you wanted to have SOME
endnotes but also be able to use footnotes? Then, I thought, you have to
use ERT. But no, I realized, you don't: You could create a character
style, thus:

Then you'd have a really incredible ability to customize LyX.

You don't mention what platform you're running on. On Windows, you can
just insert the character normally, using Character Map or Alt-0176 (on
the numeric keypad), or any of the various utilities that let you type
characters not on your keyboard (eg AllChars).
You can also use \textdegree in ERT for the degree sign.
For minutes my preference would be to use the straight apostrophe and
double-quote. The straight double-quote character is available as
Insert | Special Character | Ordinary Quote. (cua.bind also supposedly
makes it C-quotedbl, but that doesn't work for me with LyX 1.3.5 on
Windows; might be fixed in a less ancient version.)
However, there's no obvious LyX mechanism to get straight apostrophe.
In fact, I don't even know if there's a way to get it in LaTeX. It's
not listed in the LaTeX ISO entity reference [1].
There's also prime and Prime (aka double prime), which are "^\prime" and
"{''}", respectively, in math-mode; you can also enter those in ERT as
"$^\prime$" and "${''}$". The LaTeX ISO character reference sheet lists
these as "prime or minute" and "double prime or second", so I guess
they're the official minute/second glyphs. Not terribly lovely or
convenient, though.
There's also "variant prime", "{'}" in math-mode or "${'}$" in ERT, as
an alternative to ^\prime; that's a bit more consistent.
I suppose you could put the whole expression in math-mode, and use
"^\circ" (superscript circle) for the degree sign. That's a bit tricky
if you're not used to working in math mode. Say for example you want 20
degrees, 30 minutes, 40 seconds. Enter math mode (the "a+b/c" button on
the toolbar), then type "20^\circ" (without the quotes). Press
right-arrow twice to terminate the \circ entity and get out of the
superscript box. Type "30\{'" and press right-arrow to get past the },
which LyX automatically inserts for you. Type "40\{''" and press
right-arrow to get past the }, then space to get out of math-mode.
So, in summary, I'd say math-mode works OK, but this looks like a golden
opportunity to practice LyX customization to make it easier to enter
this kind of information, if you have to do it more than once or twice.

Hello there! Could somebody please advice, how is it possible to insert source code into a Lyx document with saving indentation and may be coloring of keywords / variables etc in resulting PDF/PostScript? Also it would be great if source code will have a caption at the bottom and a border (with ability to specify it's width etc). I guess I need to play with LaTeX? -- Eugene N Dzhurinsky

Besides the LaTeX class file, you also need a corresponding LyX layout
file. For example, the basic article.cls class has a corresponding
article.layout file that tells LyX how to display, etc, the environments
and such in the article.cls document class. The problem you are seeing
is due to your not having a layout file for uwthesis.cls, and so far as
I know no such layout file presently exists.
That's the bad news. The good news is that you can create a layout file
yourself and then post it on the wiki, or even submit it to the LyX
developers, so that others can use it. Moreover, since uwthesis is just
a modified version of the book layout, you'll probably be halfway there
is you just copy book.layout to uwthesis.layout and change the second
line from
# \DeclareLaTeXClass{book}
to
# \DeclareLaTeXClass{uwthesis}
Looking quickly through the uwthesis.cls file, it looks to me, in fact,
like the only thing you may need to add are fields to allow you to enter
the Title, Author, Year, Degree, Program, School, and the like. (Search
for "Title" in the class file. There are a few other things here, too.)
What else you'll need depends upon what else you're going to use.
Unfortunately, layout files are not the easiest thing in the world to
create, and the documentation concerning them is, I think all would
admit, neither complete nor user-friendly. The documentation there is is
in section 5.2 of the Customization part of the manual. There is a bit
more stuff on the wiki , and he is a
frequent contributor to the list with a lot of experience with layouts.
Some of the rest of us have played around with them, too, and so can
help answer questions and solve problems.

Dear Users, Tank you all for the responses. Meanwhile it turned out that Lyx 1.4.4-4 takes into account the bounding box when it is used with an older version of ImageMagick. This ImageMagick-6.3.0-Q16 came with the previous Lyx 1.4.3. I cannot enclose the chosen problematic figure since the Lyx list machine returned it to me, being too large to accept. However, I know that the title does not include the string "eps" but the figure is now shown correctly by Lyx. The bounding box can also be seen in gsview32. I remark, that with Imagemagick 6.3.2-Q16, used by Lyx 1.4.4-4, all my previously clipped figures were wrong in Lyx. For Paul A. Rubin: I clip the images with epstool independently of Lyx; Lyx only reads these images. With best wishes, Gyorgy Pota

How can I use a new latex layout?
Dear list users, I'm using Lyx 1.3.7 with Ubuntu Linux and I wanna use a latex layout for a thesis dissertation with Lyx. I've followed the instructions included in the zip file and it says: - copy the class file to /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/uw - next run texhash - Finally, Reconfigure Lyx. I've tried to import the example .tex file with Lyx but always it complains the uwthesis doesn't exist. Is it the right way to work with any layout in Lyx? How can I use one as a template? I encountered and reported a similar problem recently - probably you installed "for all users", right? If that is the same bug, please try the following: - unistall the spell checkers - uninstall LyX (but leave ImageMagick and MikTeX as is) - reboot - run the installer again, but now chose "for current user only" on all occurences where you are given the choice Hope it helps, Tom Schlangen --
Trouble with spellchecker with lyx 1.4.4 on windows XP
Hello there, Spellchecking doesn't work. I get the message "no word lists can be found for the language en_us" when I try to start the spellchecker. I've installed aspell 0.6 and some dictionnaries (french, english german) but i'm still unable to get it work. Could you help me please? I'm using LYX 1.4.4 on Windows XP. Thanks regards XAvier

Hi, I have some more information: when I run ordinary latex, LyX recognizes that there are undefined references, and runs bibtex (and latex again and again). BUT, when I try pdflatex, LyX doesn't recognize that it should run bibtex. The problem is the same with cross-references. Ordinary latex runs twice as it should do, but pdflatex doesn't. (But the second time I run pdflatex it works of course, but I have to do it manually). If I look at the pdflatex log (Document > Latex log), it contains the following lines: Package natbib Warning: Citation `Aho1968-indexed' on page 1 undefined on input line 14. Package natbib Warning: Citation `Allen1994:Natural-Language- Understanding' on page 1 undefined on input line 14. No file test.bbl. Package natbib Warning: There were undefined citations.
