Hi, I'm new to LyX. I would like to typeset classical Greek in LyX. In Latex the package betacode is used. Can I implement this in LYX and how do I use it? Thx, Ad

Thanks Gunnar - the answers package fixes the spacing problem, so I've
switched my document to use it.
To get it working more easy, I put the stuff below into my lyx
configuration files. With this I can just press M-g u to insert an
exercise, and then M-g a to insert ERT (two greyblocks) so I can write the
answer between the grey blocks.

Also can't get the bind file to be recognized by lyx. I created a
myShortcuts.bind file in ~/.lyx/bind with the text you gave. And I put the

them up automatically. Tried Tools - Reconfigure and restarted LyX but that
made no difference either.

Right, I've spent about 3 hours trying to sort this out, without success, so it's time to call for help. I'm getting the following message when running pdflatex: Some characters of your document are probably not representable in the chosen encoding. Changing the document encoding to utf8 could help. Changing the document encoding to utf8 does not help. I can't find a way to find out which are the offending characters. Running lyx from the command line gives me an error that local en_IE cannot be set. I tried to reconfigure the locales, but this didn't do anything for me. I'm running Kubuntu 7.10, for what that's worth. I've tried telling kde to change the language etc. No luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction. If I can't produce pdfs from this document, I'll be in trouble. (Incidentally, I've tried with a new document, and that works fine). Thanks, Declan

It is possible with some effort. I do it as follows:
1.) Implement the natbib cite commands in biblatex. For this, I've created a
natbib.cbx file (attached), which is saved in ~/texmf/biblatex/cbx/. Load
this with the package option citestyle=natbib
2.) Add the following line to your LyX *.layouts file:

ProvidesNatbib 1
(this allows you to use the styles in the citation dialog, without loading
natbib, which would clash with biblatex).
3.) In the document, load biblatex manually (in the preamble), and also add to
the preamble
\bibliography{my bib-file w/o extension}
4.) In the document, insert the bibtex inset in a LyX note, such that LyX
finds the citations, but no \bibliography command is output to LaTeX
5.) In the document, enter \printbibliography in ERT where the bibliography
shall occur.
Disclaimer: biblatex is still beta, although it works very well. It might
happen that some commands change one final time for the long-awaited version
0.7, so you're on the bleedings edge.

Hi Lyx-Users, When I try to read the Lyx file sent to me by a writer with whom I'm collaborating on a book, the message I'm getting is /tmp/song of the survivors.lyx is from an earlier version of Lyx, but the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it. One workaround might be to set LyX Preferences Paths Temporary directory setting to something in his home directory, such as ~/tmp. Then quit and restart LyX and see if the problem reemerges. I have run into this before and later discovered that what was happening was that my version was out of date not the one the other person was using. I would suggest checking with the other author : He or she may be using a more modern version of LyX. Ah, perhaps you should add an include line in the bind file that is used by
default. cua.bind perhaps?

The file I was reffering to was the tutorial, it seems like the tutorial should use the highest standards, but whatever. Yes, it appears in the LyX file as a circled r. I deleted the r's and now it comes out correctly. The first occurrence comes after the work Postscript, right? In the 1.5.2 tutorial, it's done correctly (\textregistered). I can confirm that in the 1.4.4 tutorial, it was entered as a single character. (I don't have 1.5.1 installed any longer.) So apparently it was fixed as of 1.5.2. /Paul

If you have a command line version of iconv, run it against the file; it should squawk when it hits an indigestible character. At the lyx level I cleared all configuration information I was aware of when installing 1.5.2 because the earlier 1.5 versions on OSX 10.3 were not functioning particularly well. This problem existed, 1.5.2 introduced another in being unable to change the screen font, it can be unreasonably slow and seems to make the graphics card buzz at times,... but the most serious problem is probably that the code will not compile and so I cannot simply run it under a debugger and report what is wrong. The inability to compile easily has been a problem with lyx for many years since opting for bleeding edge C++. I used to use a Sun workstation before the powerbook and made significant efforts to get lyx to compile when boost was first adopted but had to eventually accept defeat. Now when lyx fails to compile I make no effort to fix it although I will sometimes report it. This is not really intended as a criticism but more an observation since I presume those that put in the time and effort are attracted to writing C++ programs in this manner. One workaround might be to set LyX Preferences Paths Temporary directory setting to something in his home directory, such as ~/tmp. Then quit and restart LyX and see if the problem reemerges. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. The problem is not directly the one being reported. There is nothing wrong with the permissions of the reported files to prevent them being deleted. 777ing everything before quitting makes no difference. I tried your suggestion but the behaviour was the same. The problem may well be related to the environment. The compilation of lyx fails with complaints about a C++ file called environment.

In many word processors, you can select a sentance, and then click somewhere in the middle of the sentence and drag it to somewhere else in the paper. The better ones will correct spacing and capitalization for you, but it doesn't seem like this works in LyX. Not that I'm aware of. There is, of course, cut and paste. Also, you can highlight the sentence, middle-click somewhere else, and the sentence is pasted where you clicked (without affecting the original instance). LyX does not automatically adjust capitalization (and boy, do I hate it when Word or Word Perfect does -- half the time I have to dink around with delete and retype to undo that). It does half the job with spacing: if your paste action creates a double space, it will collapse it to a single space; but if you paste with no space between the sentences, it will not insert a space. I'm sympathetic to the latter -- that period after which you are pasting could be a decimal point or a dot inside a string, in which case an inserted space would be incorrect. Incidentally, there are functions for selecting the next/previous character, preceding/following word, from the cursor down/up one line, from the cursor to the start/end of the current line, or from the cursor to the start/end of the current paragraph. AFAIK most of these do not have key shortcuts, but you can create your own shortcuts for them in your bind file. There is not, however, a function to select the sentence containing the cursor. Double-clicking between characters selects the word, and triple-clicking between characters selects the line, but no way to select a sentence other than manual highlight (AFAIK). /Paul

I ran into the same problem because my document has Greek characters copied from a word document. What I did was copying and pasting a paragraph to a new document, and removing texts until it can be compiled. Then, I remove or change the offending characters in the original document. This took me a long time! I have complaint this in lyx-devel and Greek characters are correctly handled now. I believe that people are work on highlighting offending characters and giving more meaningful error messages. I think that the forthcoming 1.5.3 will have these features. Cheers, Bo

Thanks Gunnar - the answers package fixes the spacing problem, so I've
switched my document to use it.
To get it working more easy, I put the stuff below into my lyx
configuration files. With this I can just press M-g u to insert an
exercise, and then M-g a to insert ERT (two greyblocks) so I can write the
answer between the grey blocks.

them up automatically. Tried Tools - Reconfigure and restarted LyX but that
made no difference either.

Right, I've spent about 3 hours trying to sort this out, without success, so it's time to call for help. I'm getting the following message when running pdflatex: Some characters of your document are probably not representable in the chosen encoding. Changing the document encoding to utf8 could help. Changing the document encoding to utf8 does not help. I can't find a way to find out which are the offending characters. Running lyx from the command line gives me an error that local en_IE cannot be set. I tried to reconfigure the locales, but this didn't do anything for me. I'm running Kubuntu 7.10, for what that's worth. I've tried telling kde to change the language etc. No luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction. If I can't produce pdfs from this document, I'll be in trouble. (Incidentally, I've tried with a new document, and that works fine). Thanks, Declan

It is possible with some effort. I do it as follows:
1.) Implement the natbib cite commands in biblatex. For this, I've created a
natbib.cbx file (attached), which is saved in ~/texmf/biblatex/cbx/. Load
this with the package option citestyle=natbib
2.) Add the following line to your LyX *.layouts file:

(this allows you to use the styles in the citation dialog, without loading
natbib, which would clash with biblatex).
3.) In the document, load biblatex manually (in the preamble), and also add to
the preamble

5.) In the document, enter \printbibliography in ERT where the bibliography
shall occur.
Disclaimer: biblatex is still beta, although it works very well. It might
happen that some commands change one final time for the long-awaited version
0.7, so you're on the bleedings edge.

Hi Lyx-Users, When I try to read the Lyx file sent to me by a writer with whom I'm collaborating on a book, the message I'm getting is /tmp/song of the survivors.lyx is from an earlier version of Lyx, but the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it. One workaround might be to set LyX Preferences Paths Temporary directory setting to something in his home directory, such as ~/tmp. Then quit and restart LyX and see if the problem reemerges. I have run into this before and later discovered that what was happening was that my version was out of date not the one the other person was using. I would suggest checking with the other author : He or she may be using a more modern version of LyX. Ah, perhaps you should add an include line in the bind file that is used by
default. cua.bind perhaps?

The file I was reffering to was the tutorial, it seems like the tutorial should use the highest standards, but whatever. Yes, it appears in the LyX file as a circled r. I deleted the r's and now it comes out correctly. The first occurrence comes after the work Postscript, right? In the 1.5.2 tutorial, it's done correctly (\textregistered). I can confirm that in the 1.4.4 tutorial, it was entered as a single character. (I don't have 1.5.1 installed any longer.) So apparently it was fixed as of 1.5.2. /Paul

If you have a command line version of iconv, run it against the file; it should squawk when it hits an indigestible character. At the lyx level I cleared all configuration information I was aware of when installing 1.5.2 because the earlier 1.5 versions on OSX 10.3 were not functioning particularly well. This problem existed, 1.5.2 introduced another in being unable to change the screen font, it can be unreasonably slow and seems to make the graphics card buzz at times,... but the most serious problem is probably that the code will not compile and so I cannot simply run it under a debugger and report what is wrong. The inability to compile easily has been a problem with lyx for many years since opting for bleeding edge C++. I used to use a Sun workstation before the powerbook and made significant efforts to get lyx to compile when boost was first adopted but had to eventually accept defeat. Now when lyx fails to compile I make no effort to fix it although I will sometimes report it. This is not really intended as a criticism but more an observation since I presume those that put in the time and effort are attracted to writing C++ programs in this manner. One workaround might be to set LyX Preferences Paths Temporary directory setting to something in his home directory, such as ~/tmp. Then quit and restart LyX and see if the problem reemerges. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. The problem is not directly the one being reported. There is nothing wrong with the permissions of the reported files to prevent them being deleted. 777ing everything before quitting makes no difference. I tried your suggestion but the behaviour was the same. The problem may well be related to the environment. The compilation of lyx fails with complaints about a C++ file called environment.

In many word processors, you can select a sentance, and then click somewhere in the middle of the sentence and drag it to somewhere else in the paper. The better ones will correct spacing and capitalization for you, but it doesn't seem like this works in LyX. Not that I'm aware of. There is, of course, cut and paste. Also, you can highlight the sentence, middle-click somewhere else, and the sentence is pasted where you clicked (without affecting the original instance). LyX does not automatically adjust capitalization (and boy, do I hate it when Word or Word Perfect does -- half the time I have to dink around with delete and retype to undo that). It does half the job with spacing: if your paste action creates a double space, it will collapse it to a single space; but if you paste with no space between the sentences, it will not insert a space. I'm sympathetic to the latter -- that period after which you are pasting could be a decimal point or a dot inside a string, in which case an inserted space would be incorrect. Incidentally, there are functions for selecting the next/previous character, preceding/following word, from the cursor down/up one line, from the cursor to the start/end of the current line, or from the cursor to the start/end of the current paragraph. AFAIK most of these do not have key shortcuts, but you can create your own shortcuts for them in your bind file. There is not, however, a function to select the sentence containing the cursor. Double-clicking between characters selects the word, and triple-clicking between characters selects the line, but no way to select a sentence other than manual highlight (AFAIK). /Paul

I ran into the same problem because my document has Greek characters copied from a word document. What I did was copying and pasting a paragraph to a new document, and removing texts until it can be compiled. Then, I remove or change the offending characters in the original document. This took me a long time! I have complaint this in lyx-devel and Greek characters are correctly handled now. I believe that people are work on highlighting offending characters and giving more meaningful error messages. I think that the forthcoming 1.5.3 will have these features. Cheers, Bo

switched my document to use it.

Also can't get the bind file to be recognized by lyx. I created a
myShortcuts.bind file in ~/.lyx/bind with the text you gave. And I put the
layouts text in ~/.lyx/layout/myLayout.layout. But LyX didn't seem to pick
them up automatically. Tried Tools -> Reconfigure and restarted LyX but that
made no difference either.

locale or encoding difficulty, I'm not sure which
Right, I've spent about 3 hours trying to sort this out, without success, so it's time to call for help. I'm getting the following message when running pdflatex: "Some characters of your document are probably not representable in the chosen encoding. Changing the document encoding to utf8 could help." Changing the document encoding to utf8 does not help. I can't find a way to find out which are the offending characters. Running lyx from the command line gives me an error that local en_IE cannot be set. I tried to reconfigure the locales, but this didn't do anything for me. I'm running Kubuntu 7.10, for what that's worth. I've tried telling kde to change the language etc. No luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction. If I can't produce pdfs from this document, I'll be in trouble. (Incidentally, I've tried with a new document, and that works fine). Thanks, Declan

It is possible with some effort. I do it as follows:
1.) Implement the natbib cite commands in biblatex. For this, I've created a
natbib.cbx file (attached), which is saved in ~/texmf/biblatex/cbx/. Load
this with the package option "citestyle=natbib"
2.) Add the following line to your LyX *.layouts file:

happen that some commands change one final time for the long-awaited version
0.7, so you're on the bleedings edge.

Hi Lyx-Users, When I try to read the Lyx file sent to me by a writer with whom I'm collaborating on a book, the message I'm getting is "/tmp/song of the survivors.lyx is from an earlier version of Lyx, but the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it". I have run into this before and later discovered that what was happening was that my version was out of date not the one the other person was using. I would suggest checking with the other author : He or she may be using a more modern version of LyX. Ah, perhaps you should add an include line in the bind file that is used by
default. cua.bind perhaps?

(I think Linux distros come with libiconv, at least if you have the C development stuff installed. I'm not sure if that includes the command line binary.) If you don't have iconv, post the doc or send it to me directly, and I'll run iconv against it. /Paul

At the lyx level I cleared all configuration information I was aware of when installing 1.5.2 because the earlier 1.5 versions on OSX 10.3 were not functioning particularly well. This problem existed, 1.5.2 introduced another in being unable to change the screen font, it can be unreasonably slow and seems to make the graphics card buzz at times,... but the most serious problem is probably that the code will not compile and so I cannot simply run it under a debugger and report what is wrong. The inability to compile easily has been a problem with lyx for many years since opting for bleeding edge C++. I used to use a Sun workstation before the powerbook and made significant efforts to get lyx to compile when boost was first adopted but had to eventually accept defeat. Now when lyx fails to compile I make no effort to fix it although I will sometimes report it. The problem is not directly the one being reported. There is nothing wrong with the permissions of the reported files to prevent them being deleted. 777ing everything before quitting makes no difference. I tried your suggestion but the behaviour was the same. The problem may well be related to the environment. The compilation of lyx fails with complaints about a C++ file called environment.

LyX does not automatically adjust capitalization (and boy, do I hate it when Word or Word Perfect does -- half the time I have to dink around with delete and retype to undo that). It does half the job with spacing: if your paste action creates a double space, it will collapse it to a single space; but if you paste with no space between the sentences, it will not insert a space. I'm sympathetic to the latter -- that period after which you are pasting could be a decimal point or a dot inside a string, in which case an inserted space would be incorrect. Incidentally, there are functions for selecting the next/previous character, preceding/following word, from the cursor down/up one line, from the cursor to the start/end of the current line, or from the cursor to the start/end of the current paragraph. AFAIK most of these do not have key shortcuts, but you can create your own shortcuts for them in your bind file. There is not, however, a function to select the sentence containing the cursor. Double-clicking between characters selects the word, and triple-clicking between characters selects the line, but no way to select a sentence other than manual highlight (AFAIK). /Paul

I tried to reconfigure the locales, but this didn't do > anything for me. I ran into the same problem because my document has Greek characters copied from a word document. What I did was copying and pasting a paragraph to a new document, and removing texts until it can be compiled. Then, I remove or change the offending characters in the original document. This took me a long time! I have complaint this in lyx-devel and Greek characters are correctly handled now. I believe that people are work on highlighting offending characters and giving more meaningful error messages. I think that the forthcoming 1.5.3 will have these features. Cheers, Bo
