LyX on Mac OS X - installed prerequisites but still can't get output?

2007-12-25 Thread Faith Anne Scott
Hi all! Sorry for the dumb question, but here goes...

My installation of LyX says it doesn't know how to write PDF files - what do
I need to do?

I'm new to using a Mac, so this may also be my unfamiliarity with OS X. I've
downloaded and installed MacTeX, Python, and LyX. (As I understand it,
MacTeX includes ImageMagic and ghostscript; just to be sure, I used
i-installer to reinstall those packages and still have the same problem.)
LyX runs fine, but it can't produce output in any format that's useful for
me: not PDF, not PS. I also have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed; do I need
some other PDF software? Do I just need to tell LyX how to send the file to
a PDF handler?

I have encountered this problem in two relatively distinct situations:

First, when I try to create any LyX document and preview it or export it to
PDF, it tells me: No information for exporting the format PDF (pdflatex)

Second, before I realized I had this problem, I created a scratch file for
purposes of testing LyX and its integration with BibDesk and saved it. Now
when I open that file, it gives me the following error message:

The layout file requested by this document, article.layout, is not usable.
This is probably because a LaTeX class or style file required by it is not
available. See the Customization documentation for more information. LyX
will not be able to produce output.

I suspect that article.layout is something that should have been included
in the bibliography file that I tried to include in this scratch document.
If that's the case, this part of the problem can wait; if I can get some
kind of meaningful output from LyX I'll settle arguments between LyX and
BibDesk later.

Thank you!
Faith Anne Scott

Slow input with cross-reference window open

2007-12-25 Thread Jens Noeckel

Hi,
on Mac OS X 10.4 with LyX 1.5.3 (Intel), text input in the main
window slows down to a crawl when editing a large document while at
the same time the cross-reference window is left open. It's not
noticeable with small documents. I have more than a hundred cross
references in the document that I tested, and typing speed is limited
to about 2 characters per second.

I wonder if this also happens on Windows or Linux platforms?
Jens

As an addendum: this issue is already present in LyX 1.4.4 on the
same platform. Of course the work-around is to always close the cross-
ref window after inserting a ref, but for users with sufficient
display real estate it may be desirable to leave some of those
windows open all the time. Switching between open windows is somewhat
more convenient than opening and closing a window.

Dov, I'm not an expert, but my understanding is also that my issue is
a LaTeX issue. I think, however, that you're missing my point.
On platforms where a package manager is the standard way to obtain
software, LyX installs great, and I have no complaints. On platforms
where the standard way to obtain software is by downloading a file
from a website (Windows, Mac OS X), however, an application should,
whenever possible, include all of its dependencies in the installation
file. Basically, my point is that It is not user-friendly if an
application does not work properly out-of-the box.

I am not disputing that. As I said, I just don't know anything about the
packaging, so I can't help out here. And as Abdel said, any
contributions are, of course, welcome...
