Problem solved: There was an apostrophe (') that had been converted to a 
weird character when Excel saved the file (Excel for Mac, it seems, only 
has the options of Windows 
format or MS-DOS format, both incompatible with Mac). After removing that, 
it converted correctly. So, it was Excel's problem, although the error
message from LyX was not informative.

I'm guessing your right. Though I can't figure out what's
preventing if from finding "a suitable place" to break the line.

First I tried to manually build a truly minimal test document.
But the output of the test document's typewritten text was fine??? 

So I figure it must have something to do with the assorted
ERT boxes I inserted in my /frontmatter. But I haven't a clue which
one or why. 

So I copied my "Book" to "TesText.lyx". Chopped out most of the
document. And replaced the remaining text with some short test
strings But since I didn't know the cause of this behavior, I left
all the ERT boxes in place. I hope the example is *minimal* enough.

When I open TesText.lyx with lyx, then generate a pdf with
+V m

The only part of the resulting pdf that doesn't get enough right hand
margin is the typewritten section...

You must use the fancy option for headings and create your footer with latex
commands. 

Look the extended manual of LyX.

If you are using Koma script, you can use the scrpage2 package that provides
more or less the same features than fancyhdr.

I cannot confirm with 1.6.2. Are you sure you have properly specified
the path to the working directory? What happens if you move your LyX
User's directory aside and relaunch LyX?

It's possible to have the content inserted in line, as a paragraph?




If the content is text, you can use pdftext to extract the text from the 
PDF file and then import it into LyX (where you will need to reformat it 
if you do not want it using the format of the rest of your document). 
Otherwise, pasting it in as an image may be your best bet.

I can't reproduce that.
When my figure is smaller than the caption and I adjust the width of the 
wrapfigure by the LyX-Dialog, the caption is properly split up in 
several lines of text.
Looking into the documentation of wrapfigure (at the end of 
wrapfig.sty), it says:


Parameter "#4" (the second required parameter) is the width of the figure
or table.  Given the way that \LaTeX\ puts just about everything into boxes
with the current line-width, the width parameter will take precedence over
whatever natural width the figure has.  In particular, the caption is 
always

typeset with the specified width.

So I don't think the whitespace around the figure is controled by the 
length of the caption.
I could imagine that the horizontal dimension of your 
wrapfig-environment is set up too big and your picture is left- or 
right-aligned, that could mislead to the impression you have about the 
caption.

There seems to be a minor bug in Mac OS Lyx 1.6.1. The steps:

Go to File>New From Template, which opens /User/Library/Application
Support/Lyx-1.6/templates/ and prompts for a lyx template to be
opened.

Choose a template from /User/Library/Application
Support/Lyx-1.6/templates/default/ and create a document from it.

When prompted to "Save As", LyX points to the
/User/Library/Application Support/Lyx-1.6/templates/ directory instead
of the directory specified as Working Directory in Preferences (for
me, the Desktop).

Nothing life-threatening, just not the expected behavior.

Can't you just insert the pdf a graphic?
Anyway, I had the opposite problem. I wanted to insert whole pages
of an external pdf. I didn't know about the pdfpages package until
you posting. This solved my problem, thanks.

Formatting marginal notes

Hi all,

I have been trying to produce a format for marginal notes  more suitable to my 
documents, but I am stuck with leading space. I can successfully change the 
font size of the margin note by using the marginnote package and then issuing:

\let\marginpar\marginnote
\renewcommand*{\marginfont}{\scriptsize}

in the preamble. However, the line spacing is not correct. Even though the 
lines are more narrowly spaced than for a regular size font, they are still 
too far apart. Beside being aesthetically unpleasant, this produces margin 
notes that are too long and sometimes overlap each other, whereas there would 
be plenty of physical space on the pace if the text were more narrowly typeset 
(vertically, that is).
Does anyone know a solution?

Installing Memoir Class Upgrade

  Yesterday I downloaded the latest memoir class to replace the 5-year-old
version I had here. I placed all the .sty and .clo files in
/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/memoir/, and memoir.layout in ~/.lyx/layouts.

  Next, I ran /usr/share/texmf/bin/texhash, reconfigured LyX, killed the
process, and started a new one.

  However, when I select the memoir book class for a document I'm writing, I
get an error related to a section much later in the outline than where I'm
currently working. The errors are that font commands (e.g. \sl and \rm) are
not supported, and that \footruleskip is already defined.

  I've obviously messed up with the installation of the latest memoir class
but have no idea how to fix things. I looked in the user guide, advanced
features, and on the wiki without finding anything useful.

  A pointer to what I missed is greatly appreciated.

uber-thing that kills lyx it comes within 3 miles of lyx. once you do that,
you need to delete it and restart lyx.
Do not use fancy characters in citations!

I think I've tracked the critical error to the following message:

{C:/Program Files/MiKTeX 2.7/fonts/enc/dvips/fontname/8r.enc}
!pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file mtsy.pfb): cannot open Type 1 font file for readi
ng
 ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

According to a latex community thread (http://www.latex-
community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=783&p=2683), the file mtsy.pfb is part 
of a commercial package by a defunct company. Like the poster in that thread, 
the fonts are the default setting in one template which I have to use. If I 
knew how to change that setting, I would try it...

Suggestions welcome.

version back, QUITTING LYX and restarting lyx, then loading the older
version – works fine. Apparantly the last save broke something that takes
lyx with it. It is not just my machine, my other Mac cannot compile the last
version, either.
So, with the reverted version I can keep working. I can simply redo the last
work, it is only like 10 minutes.

If you want to debug what went wrong there, please don't hesitate asking me
for whatever I can offer.

to open.
If that one is still not compilable you should consider to switch to a

No, those lines got inserted sometime during the email transmission process.

Thanks, Günter! The pointer to Document>LaTeX Log was very helpful. 
Unfortunately, I have experience interpreting latex error messages. The key 
seems to be (1) figuring out the critical information to identify the missing 
fonts and (2) getting the fonts from somewhere and making them available to 
MikTeX. Any advice for those steps?

Keyboard Shortcut

find where I can assign ctrl-l to 'Insert TeX code'. Where is it hidden?

  In earlier versions, when all shortcuts were in the appropriate bind file,
it was easy enough to add new ones to make my writing more efficient. While
I can live with the lists in the menu, I would like to find functions there.

I'm going nuts. If I add the ERT \end{document} right as the first thing all
at the top of the document, it still does not compile, with no error
message. It doesn't even take time. It simply doesn't react.
However, if I cut everything and write "hi" into the document, it compiles.

I know that this file used to compile because I have the pdf. Something
outside of my document is causing this failure, I think, however the only 2
things I changed were the bibliography and the document. Removing the
bibliography from the document does not fix the issue.

Also, last time I closed lyx it complained that it could not remove some
temporary directory.

This might all be unrelated, but could it be relevant? What should I be
looking for?

problem inserting .pdf as external material

  Hi list! I've tried to insert various .pdfs as external material,
using the pdfpages package. Everything works fine, except that any
imported pdf seems to start a new page. This is not the best looking
result... I get something like:

As you can see in the .pdf:



It's possible to have the content inserted in line, as a paragraph?

I don't think so. Firstly, I am on OSX and secondly, I haven't changed
anything about the graphics files recently.
 I think it's strange. I dropbox collect recent versions, and even after
going 3 hours back in time, it won't compile, then with another strange
error message: Paragraph ended before \...@setref@link was complete.
Very weird.

The error is right there, but why you're getting it I don't know. It 
looks as if there's a filename there that is mangled for some reason. 
Have a look at the tex file itself and see if you can figure out what's 
happened.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize this was possible.
I tried exporting to csv and importing to LyX (see
my previous posting), but it didn't work. This does work, but
it should be added that it is necessary to paste
as "plain text," otherwise the tabs are ignored.

C70/song/m/n/10/4f=cyberb4f at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM) file no"


In my experience, I once worked to generate PDF output with Java and 
Apache XSL-FO, in which Unicode font was needed to embed it as CID font 
into the PDF output. I think the problem at hand is a font thing that no 
suitable font is found to make the PDF

Indeed, I am (for perhaps the first time in my life) one step ahead of

However, I just used it to convert the PDF to PS, and the resulting PS
is a bitmap. Major suckitude. :(

Well, your file works fine at my place, apart from the fact that it 
looks ugly because of overlapping tables etc...

But I just remembered another possiblity:
You can use Minipages ("boxes") instead of a table.
The Minipages are adjustable in their horizontal dimension and you can 
add variable horizontals spaces between them so they are distributed nicely.

Again, tell me if you need an example-file...

OK, I am trying to export as PostScript and it is not working.
However, it does work as PDF. And I want to use the Junicode font, so
here is what I am doing:

1) The preamble is set to

\usepackage{fontspec}
\setromanfont{Junicode}
\usepackage{xunicode}
\usepackage{xltxtra}

In Document > Settings > Fonts I have set

Default Family: Roman
Roman: Default
Sans Serif: Default
Trypewriter: Default
CJK: 
Base Size: 12

In the document  window I typed "some text."

The document name is newfile1. I export as pdflatex, and then from the
command line "xelatex newfile1." The resulting PDF says "some text" set
in Junicode 12 point. Perfect.

But If I try to export as PostScript I get the following error message:

Font EU1/lmr/m/n/10=[lmroman10-regular] at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric
(TFM) Font \...@basefont=junicode at 10.0pt not loadable: Metric (TFM)
file not foun Undefined control sequence.
Missing number, treated as zero.

I think the problem is that the export to pdflatex understands it needs
to use XeTeX, but the export to PostScript does not. Therefore, the
PostScript interpreter can't figure what font I want.

Further advice needed. :(

I usually do this kind of layout by simply adding a table without 
visible lines and add the content where I want it.
So in your case, I would create a single float environment, add a 2x2 
table, merge the upper fields, insert the first figure.
Then, I would set the width of the colums to a defined value (because 
then I am allowed to fill in more than one line of content in a cell).
Afterwards, I would insert the table in the lower left cell and the 
other stuff in the lower right cell.

Do you need an example-file?

lyx and gnome document viewer

Using 1.5.6

I am trying to create an a5 document,  I have selected a5 in the right
place in lyx,  however it seems that this is not being passed on to
gnome document viewer,

I thought it looked odd,  as the text for title was not in the right
place relative to the actual preview page sizes, its sort of in the
middle at the top part of the page,  but if I was to put a5 paper over
that area, hold up to the light so it visible through the sheets,   it
would appear in the right place if printed on a5,  so how do I get the
preview to display as an a5 page ?  so the document does not look all
out of place.

Is this a bug in lyx or a bug in the gnome document viewer.
I am using ubuntu 8.10.

What aspect of the difference between "formatting" and "structure markup" is 
unclear to you?

BTW: What you propose is exactly what "experienced" users of Word (who don't 
know anything else) consistently do. Why they use Word for editing _plain-text_ 
is totally unclear to _me_. And it is a PITA to work with such people (, 
methods and tools) on structured, technical documents.

I accidently sent this to Typhoon, so have now posted to the right place
, (hopefully)


Seems to be that ReST would yet another markup to learn,  where as if we
stick to say Latex or plain text,  we use what we are familar with, and
can go back to concentrating on content,  which is one of the main
points of latex.

pastebin supports LaTex, so i what would be needed is some sort of
website that people working on a paper can log in to, and paste bits of
code, and then perhaps upload pdf, ps, or dvi files to link to the code,

Or even better

something like this

which supports programming languages but set up to deal with latex,
online so select output, hit compile and it produces a pdf or whatever
on the remote server for the team to download and review.

I am sure the above is possible,  not sure how though.

the txt2tags website can take simple mark up and produce latex output,
ok this goes back to what i said earlier,  about learning more mark up,
but it shows that this can be done,  so an online latex collaboration
tool should be possible,  if it concentrated on latex and related such
as bibtex, then it would be a very powerful tool.

Just for fun, I've tried to make a module out of it. I am no LaTeX
expert at all, so I have issues and perhaps someone can clarify them to me:

LaTeX complains about environment "Sbox" being undefined. I can work
around using "sbox" instead, but then, I still get plenty of errors. Is
Sbox different from sbox ? If so, should I add something to define it ?

Works for me on Windows (Miktex, 1.6.2 "Alt" installer). But I'm not

Would you mind to send me the original file privately. I have been fixing all 
interaction between lyx2lyx and other converters and I am interested why this 
fails in this case.
