Why this list refuses small zip / 7z archives ?

2010-01-20 Thread Olivier Ripoll

Dear all,

I've been trying to post some Tango-ified LyX icons on this list, once
as zip, once as 7z archive, but although the archive is not big (110 KB
for the zip version, 80 KB for the 7z one), I always get a failure
notice with the following part:

---
lyx-users@lists.lyx.org
SMTP error from remote mailer after end of data:
 host wierdlmpc.msci.memphis.edu [141.225.11.87]:
554 This message contains prohibited content
---

I'm not planning to attach the images individually, there are more than
100 files (including variants and some xcf)! How can I send them to the
list. Should I change the extension to pretend it's something else ?

Best regards,

Olivier.

PS: I'm going through the gmane newsgroup interface.

PPS: zipped content should be seen as valid content. After all,
attaching a svgz or a compressed LyX file should be accepted, shouldn't it ?

Rob

Thanks. Although I haven't used the longtable package, I am aware of its
exsistence.

My report is already some 30 odd pages and if I allow each table to take 2
pages it will make it even more bulky.

There seems to be two alternatives.
1) Carry on preparing the table by hand as I currently do and then importing
it directly into Lyx.

2) Attempt to create the table in R.

Do you think it's worth the effort to do this in R.

Hi Steve,

Yes, you can automatically insert page breaks into a long table. This is
done through the use of the longtable package. There is a good overview
on

how to use longtable in the LyX user manual. Longtable has a few nice
features, such as the ability to automatically add a header to the table
on

every page.

I am not, aware of a way to automatically split a given table into two
sections, however. Perhaps others on the list might be able to provide
additional recommendations?

Cheers,

Dear list

As very much a Lyx/Latex newbie, I hope that this is not too difficult a
problem to be resolved.

I produce a multi-col table of data in R and at the moment I reconfigure
the

table in Excel so that I can copy/paste it into a report in Word.

I have managed to get the Sweave/Lyx link in MS Windows working but my
problem is the follows.

From the R code the table looks like this - up to 80 rows or more and 5
col

lab_id A B ZBW ZWI
4er66 3.60 3.30 3.26 6.49
4gcyi 2.96 2.91 0.47 1.10

Since this does not fit on a single A4 page (portrait), I then manually
split the table in half and it looks like this

Thanks for the response and the interest

I currently do it manually but copy/paste from Excel into Word. I use R to
do the analysis and then write a csv file which I manipulate in Excel and
paste into Word

I am aware of long tables and xtable but that does not solve the problem of
splitting the number of rows in half and placing them side by side on one
page

In the original post it wasn't clear whether you were transferring the
results to LyX manually (copy paste) or via Sweave (using xtable()
or latex() commands). In case of the latter, the two commands allow to
convert R objects into LaTeX long-tables. As Rob already mentioned,
these tables would automatically break at the end of the page.

Again, how do you manually split it? Copy paste or by manipulating

Outline, Navigate, Master / Child document weirdness

2010-01-20 Thread Maarten Rutgers
Hello,

I am having strange and irreproducible results
with Master and Child documents. I wanted to
check here first before submitting it as a bug.

I work mostly on large document in the form
of a single master document with many
included files containing chapters. With the
master document open, the outline windows
(in table of contents (TOC) view) nicely shows
all the chapters in the entire document.

For some of my projects, the entire TOC shows
up even if I only open up a child document,
and I can call up the master document from
the Navigate menu.

For other projects (perhaps more recent ones)
the TOC will only show up for the current chapter,
and the Navigate menu has no link to for the master.

In all my real document and a few test cases
I do define the master document in the document
settings for the child.

Has anybody seen the same behavior? Perhaps I am
missing some setting that causes this to happen.

Thanks.

Maarten.

Two hints:
You don't need to use TeX code for vertical spaces; LyX supports them via the menu

You also don't need to use TeX code to insert characters like the copyright sign ©. You can insert
them via the menu Insert-Special characters-Symbols.

Yes, all children are included in the master and all children point back to the

So the fact that I cannot see all the children when I only open one child (but
not the master) is irregular. I have this issue with LyX 1.6.5 on both mac and

(I think it is 50 MB), but other than that, I've found it a good way for

and you should see them all under View. You should also see the outline for
 the whole document.

Are all the children actually included in the master? If not, you will not
see them, because the master doesn't know about them.

If so, how?

It should read

Re: question about family fonts

2010-01-20 Thread Marcelo Acuña
If I choose Times Roman for roman font, what
font I must to choose for sans serif font If I want to
 obtain an aesthetically coherent aspect?

Times is a font designed for newspapers (New York Times).
Its glyphs are therefore thinner with less space between
them. When you want to write a book, I could therefore not
 recommend Times as font.

I am using two columns in the book, therefore I am interested exactly in that:
glyphs thinner with less space between.

To get aesthetically coherent aspect for all 3 font
types, the best is to use the corresponding Latin Modern
 font.

Yes, but encounter that font is of too thin outlines. I believe that it brings
problems at the time of going to the press.

   The same for Bookman font.

Why this list refuses small zip / 7z archives ?

I've been trying to post some Tango-ified LyX icons on this list, once

I'm not planning to attach the images individually, there are more than
100 files (including variants and some xcf)! How can I send them to the
list. Should I change the extension to pretend it's something else ?

Best regards,

PS: I'm going through the gmane newsgroup interface.

PPS: zipped content should be seen as valid content. After all,
attaching a svgz or a compressed LyX file should be accepted, shouldn't it ?

My report is already some 30 odd pages and if I allow each table to take 2

From the R code the table looks like this - up to 80 rows or more and 5
col

Since this does not fit on a single A4 page (portrait), I then manually
split the table in half and it looks like this

In the original post it wasn't clear whether you were transferring the
results to LyX manually (copy paste) or via Sweave (using xtable()
or latex() commands). In case of the latter, the two commands allow to
convert R objects into LaTeX long-tables. As Rob already mentioned,
these tables would automatically break at the end of the page.

Outline, Navigate, Master / Child document weirdness

of a single master document with many
included files containing chapters. With the
master document open, the outline windows
(in table of contents (TOC) view) nicely shows
all the chapters in the entire document.

For some of my projects, the entire TOC shows
up even if I only open up a child document,
and I can call up the master document from

Has anybody seen the same behavior? Perhaps I am
missing some setting that causes this to happen.

Thanks.

Yes, all children are included in the master and all children point back to the

So the fact that I cannot see all the children when I only open one child (but
not the master) is irregular. I have this issue with LyX 1.6.5 on both mac and

all the documents? I have no idea what I did to my older document which has
 this nice behavior.

Yes. The master and its other children should be opened in the background,
and you should see them all under View. You should also see the outline for
 the whole document.

Are all the children actually included in the master? If not, you will not
see them, because the master doesn't know about them.

Hi Olivier,

A rather simple solution is using one of the file share sites such as

Another option might be to use a service such as Windows Live Skydrive
(http://skydrive.live.com). I've used it to host photos and other files for
a while and I don't really have any complaints. There are size restrictions
(I think it is 50 MB), but other than that, I've found it a good way for
sharing files with friends and family.

Yes, but encounter that font is of too thin outlines. I believe that it brings
problems at the time of going to the press.

My report is already some 30 odd pages and if I allow each table to take 2

There seems to be two alternatives.

In the original post it wasn't clear whether you were transferring the
results to LyX manually (copy & paste) or via Sweave (using xtable()
or latex() commands). In case of the latter, the two commands allow to
convert R objects into LaTeX long-tables. As Rob already mentioned,
these tables would automatically break at the end of the page.

Outline, Navigate, Master / Child document weirdness

Thanks.

Maarten.

This looks really nice. I will request the set by separate e-mail later.

Why haven't you followed my advice to set the AMS option as I wrote? Doing this, subequations will
be known by LaTeX as I explained.

Besides this, there were was a mistake: You set the paragraph of the subequation formula to
left-aligned. Doing this is not allowed when using subequations. (I'll add this info to the Math
manual.)

I'll attached your fixed file in a private message.

Two hints:
You don't need to use TeX code for vertical spaces; LyX supports them via the menu
Insert->Formatting->vertical space.
You also don't need to use TeX code to insert characters like the copyright sign ©. You can insert
them via the menu Insert->Special characters->Symbols.

Fwd: Outline, Navigate, Master / Child document weirdness

I set up a very simple test document with three chapters, each included in one
master, each referring back to the master. All four documents (1 master, and 3
children) are all in the same directory. Question is, is opening only one
child even supposed to show the whole table of contents for all the documents?
I have no idea what I did to my older document which has this nice behavior.

Is it appropriate to attach screenshots in these e-mails, or files?

Thanks.

Yes. The master and its other children should be opened in the
background, and you should see them all under View. You should also see
the outline for the whole document.

Are all the children actually included in the master? If not, you will
not see them, because the master doesn't know about them.

Re: Outline, Navigate, Master / Child document weirdness

Yes, all children are included in the master and all children point back to the
master in Docment.

So the fact that I cannot see all the children when I only open one child (but
not the master) is irregular. I have this issue with LyX 1.6.5 on both mac and
PC. Again, I do have files on my computer which are older (i.e. started with
older versions of LyX), which do show the full outline if only one child
document is open

Puzzled...

Hi Olivier,

A rather simple solution is using one of the file share sites such as
rapidshare.com, hotfile.com, megaupload.com, upload.to, or one of
many others. For small files, the service is free, and they'll delete the
files after some time automatically.

Good idea,

Rapidshare is limited to 10 downloads, and it did not work when I tried
to download the file (server error). It is at:

Yeah, and that way you don't have to take the time to mess around with the
wiki. I'm like you Oliver -- my days are too short to be wikiing around just
to distribute a few files.

Ok, I finally ran a reconfigure on my LyX and the problem went away. Now
having just one child document open without the master being open will again
bring up all the relevant child documents. I have not reconfigured for along
time. I am surprised though that the problem manifested itself on two
computers at the same time.

So, not much of a solution since I have no idea how to reproduce this problem
again. Just keep in mind that when your outline starts doing funny things,
reconfigure your LyX

Query... adding multiple authors names to TOC

Dear all:

I want to add the contributory writers' names to the table-of-contents
of an anthology where almost every chapter is written by a different
author. Is that possible, without including the names in the chapter
title itself?

If so, how?

It should read

GOANS AND THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE ... ... Alfred F. Braganza ... 147

Many thanks! Would appreciate a cc of your reply to me! FN

Use the menu Insert-> Short Title. In the appearing box enter the title that should only appear in
