I did look at Customization documentation as suggested in the error message in this window; however, I still could not understand how to fix the problem. Unfortunately, the error message does not give any information on what *.sty and/or *.cls files are missing. For example, when I tried the template elsarticle.lyx this error message came up. elsarticle is a template for the Elsevier scientific article document class. It is used for journal publications in Elsevier journals. If you need to use this document class, you have to install it. This is easily done using the TeXLive package manager. The problem is that Ubuntu still installs by default an old version of the LaTeX distribution TeXLive. It is recommended to use TeXLive 2008 or 2009 instead of the predefined version 2007 because since version 2008 there is a package manager available. On Windows the package handling is easier than on Ubuntu: When installing LyX, all LaTeX-packages supported and used by LyX will automatically also installed. When you later compile a document and LaTeX cannot find a package or document class, it will automatically try to install it from the Internet without bothering you. regards Uwe
Re: Elsarticle.cls
First, you should make sure that your document compiles without any special class option. When this is verified, add "5p" in the "Custom" class options in the "Document Settings" > "Document Class" as you already do. When you get option clashes with the geometry package, the problem can be avoided by selecting: - "Default Format" under "Document Settings" > "Page Layout". - "Default Margins" under "Document Settings" > "Page Margins". In other words, you disable the ability to customize the margin spacing, page size, etc., but this is fine as what you really want is to comply with your publisher. Hope this helps, Julien

I know that the journal I am submitting to is of the "5p" format. How do I add this option to the elsarticle template provided in lyx? I have tried to place "5p" in the custom class options in the document settings This is the correct place. but end up with an error. "Option clash for package geometry". This is because elsarticle loads the LaTeX-package "geometry" by itself when you are using the "5p" option. LyX always loads the package geometry. The problem is that elsarticle loads it with no options while LyX loads it with the option corresponding to the document page dimensions. Neither elsarticle's nor LyX's loading of geometry can be suppressed. I therefore propose not to use the "5p" document class option until your paper is ready to be submitted. Just before committing 1. add the "5p" option 2. export your document as LaTeX 3. open the exported .tex file with a text editor and delete the line \usepackage[xxx]{geometry} (xxx is an option depending on the LyX document page dimensions settings) 4. Submit the changed .tex file I'm forwarding your mail to the lyx-users mailing list in case somebody else has a better solution than me. regards Uwe
