Try out the complete variant of the alternative Windows installer:

To install LyX open an Internet connection before starting the installer. The installation can take

This is because every LaTeX distribution only offers a basic set of document classes in the default
installation.

I did look at Customization documentation as suggested in the error
message in this window; however, I still could not understand how to fix
the problem. Unfortunately, the error message does not give any
information on what *.sty and/or *.cls files are missing. For example,
when I tried the template elsarticle.lyx this error message came up.

elsarticle is a template for the Elsevier scientific article document class. It is used for journal
publications in Elsevier journals. If you need to use this document class, you have to install it.
This is easily done using the TeXLive package manager.

The problem is that Ubuntu still installs by default an old version of the LaTeX distribution
TeXLive. It is recommended to use TeXLive 2008 or 2009 instead of the predefined version 2007
because since version 2008 there is a package manager available.

On Windows the package handling is easier than on Ubuntu: When installing LyX, all LaTeX-packages
supported and used by LyX will automatically also installed. When you later compile a document and
LaTeX cannot find a package or document class, it will automatically try to install it from the
Internet without bothering you.

Re: Elsarticle.cls

2010-02-03 Thread Julien Rioux
First, you should make sure that your document compiles without any special
class option.

When this is verified, add "5p" in the "Custom" class options in the "Document
Settings" > "Document Class" as you already do.

When you get option clashes with the geometry package, the problem can be
avoided by selecting:
  - "Default Format" under "Document Settings" > "Page Layout".
  - "Default Margins" under "Document Settings" > "Page Margins".

In other words, you disable the ability to customize the margin spacing, page
size, etc., but this is fine as what you really want is to comply with your
publisher.

Hope this helps,

Julien

The latter is the biggest problem. Cross-references, in particular,
are much worse in every other format compared to LaTeX, because
they're not structured the same way. So if you use that a lot,
AFAICT, you're hosed.

I never managed to get it to work on MacOS, so I have a VM that runs a
Debian (ancestor of Ubuntu) system just for doing this. It's not
hard.

I have tried to place "5p" in the custom class options in the document

This is the correct place.

but end up with an error. "Option clash for package geometry".

This is because elsarticle loads the LaTeX-package "geometry" by itself
when you are using the "5p" option. LyX always loads the package
geometry. The problem is that elsarticle loads it with no options while
LyX loads it with the option corresponding to the document page
dimensions. Neither elsarticle's nor LyX's loading of geometry can be
suppressed.

I therefore propose not to use the "5p" document class option until your
paper is ready to be submitted. Just before committing

1. add the "5p" option
2. export your document as LaTeX
3. open the exported .tex file with a text editor and delete the line
   \usepackage[xxx]{geometry}
(xxx is an option depending on the LyX document page dimensions settings)
4. Submit the changed .tex file

Hi Liviu

I use it about once per month to convert a report created in Lyx to OpenOffice
but I find it chokes on some of Lyx's formatting and I have to run a vim script
to remove or alter the offending code.

The list of changes needed increases occasionally as new tables appear in the
report.

The vim script I use is currently:

:%s/\\LARGE//eg
:%s/\\Large//eg
:%s/\\large//eg
:%s/>{\\raggedright}p{2.3in}/l/eg
:%s/>{\\raggedright}p{2.6in}/l/eg
:%s/\\textrm//eg
:%s/\\textendash/ --- /eg
:%s/\\textquoteright/'/eg
:%s/\\textquotedoubleright/''/eg
:%s/\\newpage//eg

I run this script on the .tex produced by exporting the lyx file to latex. Then
run ConvTex on the altered .tex file to produce a .sxw file that can then be
read by OO.

A bit clumsy but it gets me the result I need.

I think you've got all the answers you need in the long thread, but just to
repeat:

1. You need to install TeX4ht on your system

2. TeX4Ht comes with a number of scripts, including htlatex, oolatex, etcetera

3. htlatex converts to html, oolatex converts to openoffice

4. You do not need to be on linux to use TeX4ht

5. See the link above for instructions on how to install TeX4ht on Windows. I
am on linux and cannot help with installaton

6. Once you have installed TeX4ht and, possibly, Sun Java if needed, LyX's
command File>>Export>>Open Document will work

At present, my issue in distributing it is about mixed licenses (LyX
icons are GPL, Tango are public domain, I use part of a gimp icon,
several icons come from the Tango openoffice.org theme, whose license I
haven't found yet, but comes with Mandriva "free" edition).

We "refuse" to solve your problem? Why should we? Getting help on a
public mailing list relies on the goodwill of its participants, not on
their duties or obligations. With your current approach you will only
manage to turn people off from helping you.

Should this be documented on the wiki?

This is a common misconception. lyx2lyx is called whenever the file
format of the file differs from the file format used in the running LyX
version. (This will usually work fine with older file formats and fail
with newer ones, hence an old LyX version might see this kind of problems
with "contemporary" lyx documents.)
