I just reinstalled LyX 1.6.7 on the same computer and it handled both TIFFs
just fine. (My other computer runs Ubuntu and LyX 2.0 isn't available for it
yet.) So it looks like a LyX problem, not a MiKTeX problem (or maybe there's
something in the way they interact).

auto-replacement feature. What is worse, LyX does not even give feedback
when a character cannot be found in the font! I don't know whether there is
some hint in the XeTeX/LuaTeX log files.

XeTeX development is stalled/completed. Asking for auto-replacement of
missing chars at the luatex developers list might be an idea.

 (p.s. its exactly for occasional use, in our global world, that it
 would be nice to have this, rather than for regular multilingual users
 of Lyx who can choose their preferred fonts). 

For this occasional use, you cannot get around the need to set a
comprehensive font as default. My recommendation is DejaVu (the OpenOffice
default, suitable for both screen and print).

 (Polyglossia is still at 2010/7/27 (CTAN) which has no Chinese support,

Yes. (However, as it is a modular system, you can add support for any
language by writing a language file modelled on the existing ones.)

As Chinese is not supported by polyglossia, you could consider setting up
a font for the other languages. Unfortunately, there is no generic hook
for the Latin script (like for cyrillic). I.e. you need to define a
languagefont for every language you are going to use in
DocumentSettingsLaTeX preamble, e.g.

\newfonfamily\englishfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\germanfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\spanishhfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\dutchfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\danishfont\{Linux Libertine O}

(Do this once and save as template or document defaults.)

Then, whenever a document uses one these languages (as main document
language or for a text part), polyglossia will select the languagefont.
This also means, the main font is only used *outside* any of the
above-defined languages -- you still need to set Chinese document parts
or other exotic symbols to Chinese (or some dummy language).

as Mukhtar Ullah already pointed out, the point is about not writing an 
absolute 
path to keep your document independent of your file hierarchy. Imagine your 
document in a git repository getting pulled to other systems.
This neat info-insert macro writes out the current absolute path dynamically 
dependent on the system who is running LyX, that's why for me this solution 
works quite well albeit it looks somewhat like a hack.

thanks. I'll take a look at this option but at first sight I'm not sure if it's 
gonna work since most of the time you'll pass a lot of arguments to 
pgfplotstable to specify the layout of your table. Or you even don't actually 
show the table but link it to variable \datatable which is then used in 
pgfplots 
for diagram input. So you're stuck with a lot of ERT code anyway since LyX has 
no direct TikZ, pgfplots, pgfplotstable support but works quite well (even 
better with this wonderful preview-insert in LyX 2.0, love it!) with them.

Most likely you changed the spacing in the paragraph settings. Make sure 
you select the offending text and click Edit  Paragraph Settings and 
set the Line spacing back to default.

Buenas kisiera que me pueden ayudar con lyx, no he posido superar ni el primer 
paso, la intalacion descarge la ulitma vecion 2.0 
y como nunca he usado el mixtex le di en la opcion de descargar, pero despues 
me bota un error que no puede descargar y solo me queda cancelar , termina de 
intalar y al escribir algo y mostrata en DVI me bota error, he probado con otro 
intalacion la vericon 1.6 y lleguo a intalar el mixtex pero al iniciar me sale 
un cuadro piendome esto
tex\platex\config\platex.ini , le doy en aceptar y nada, luego busque el 
directorio donde supestamente esta el archivo que me pide y no lo acepta , lo 
he marcado lla opcion de descarga por internet y nada, asi q le di en cancelar 
trata de compilar la vercion 1.6. e igual me sigue saliendo el error entonses 
mire en la parte de clases de documento y me sale que ninguno esta disponible, 
ayuda que devo hacer o he intalado algo mal. si me puedieran enviar links para 
una intalacion desde 0. grasias de ante mano

escribir en ese idioma.
 Yo puedo responderte en español, pero da la impresión, (no estás poniendo 
suficientes datos), de que usás windows, como usuario de linux no tengo idea de 
como ayudarte con los problemas de windows.
 Te sugiero que escribas en inglés (o escribas en frases cortas sin errores de 
ortografía y sintáxis y las pases por un traductor al inglés).

LyX provides an interface to Babel (and Polyglossia) for these things,
but I am not sure if it has support for Macedonian. I did find
'mkdtex', which seems to provide a Babel add-on. I don't know how it
could be used (with LyX).

LyX provides an interface to Babel (and Polyglossia) for these things,
but I am not sure if it has support for Macedonian. I did find
'mkdtex', which seems to provide a Babel add-on. I don't know how it
could be used (with LyX).

I just reinstalled LyX 1.6.7 on the same computer and it handled both TIFFs
just fine. (My other computer runs Ubuntu and LyX 2.0 isn't available for it
yet.) So it looks like a LyX problem, not a MiKTeX problem (or maybe there's
something in the way they interact).

The font substitution for "exotic" characters in LyX is done by QT, with
"view in HTML", its a feature of the browser (I suppose that not all
browsers will do it).

However, with "use-non-tex-fonts", for the printout, LyX relies on the
external XeTeX or LuaTeX engines which do not have such an
auto-replacement feature. What is worse, LyX does not even give feedback
when a character cannot be found in the font! I don't know whether there is
some hint in the XeTeX/LuaTeX log files.

XeTeX development is stalled/completed. Asking for auto-replacement of
missing chars at the luatex developers list might be an idea.

For this occasional use, you cannot get around the need to set a
comprehensive font as default. My recommendation is DejaVu (the OpenOffice
default, suitable for both screen and print).

Yes. (However, as it is a modular system, you can add support for any
language by writing a language file modelled on the existing ones.)

As Chinese is not supported by polyglossia, you could consider setting up
a font for the other languages. Unfortunately, there is no generic "hook"
for the Latin script (like for cyrillic). I.e. you need to define a
"languagefont" for every language you are going to use in
Document>Settings>LaTeX preamble, e.g.

\newfonfamily\englishfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\germanfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\spanishhfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\dutchfont\{Linux Libertine O}
\newfonfamily\danishfont\{Linux Libertine O}

(Do this once and save as template or document defaults.)

Then, whenever a document uses one these languages (as main document
language or for a text part), polyglossia will select the font.
This also means, the main font is only used *outside* any of the
above-defined languages -- you still need to set Chinese document parts
or other "exotic" symbols to Chinese (or some dummy language).

as Mukhtar Ullah already pointed out, the point is about not writing an 
absolute 
path to keep your document independent of your file hierarchy. Imagine your 
document in a git repository getting pulled to other systems.
This neat info-insert macro writes out the current absolute path dynamically 
dependent on the system who is running LyX, that's why for me this solution 
works quite well albeit it looks somewhat like a hack.

thanks. I'll take a look at this option but at first sight I'm not sure if it's 
gonna work since most of the time you'll pass a lot of arguments to 
pgfplotstable to specify the layout of your table. Or you even don't actually 
show the table but link it to variable \datatable which is then used in 
pgfplots 
for diagram input. So you're stuck with a lot of ERT code anyway since LyX has 
no direct TikZ, pgfplots, pgfplotstable support but works quite well (even 
better with this wonderful preview-insert in LyX 2.0, love it!) with them.

Most likely you changed the spacing in the paragraph settings. Make sure 
you select the offending text and click Edit > Paragraph Settings and 
set the Line spacing back to default.

trata de compilar la vercion 1.6. e igual me sigue saliendo el error entonses 
mire en la parte de clases de documento y me sale que ninguno esta disponible, 
ayuda que devo hacer o he intalado algo mal. si me puedieran enviar links para
