Rotating captions

2001-03-29 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

I'm have some of my figures 90 rotated to fit the page. But the captions
dont't rotate.
how can i achive this? It looks so ugly, if your figure is rotated, but the
caption not.
I have searched the lyx-archive on Herbert's page, but found nothing :-(

Then I have some figures which include the [tb] in their floats, but if
there isn't enough text in your section, LyX places the figures centered on
a single page. I don't want the figures to be centered, but the [tb] command
is ignored. Strange.

Chris

Section-numbering

2001-03-08 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

I my document I want to switch off temporarily the secion-numbering.
Although, the sections should still apear in the toc. It is somewhat
biological work and the many generas and species, I have to describe
shouldn't show up with numbers. Like this:

Phylum
Class
Subclass
Supraorder
Order
Suborder
Family
Genus
Species

To receive a small, but usefull toc, I only want to show the family and the
Genus in the toc.
I could use \addcontentsline, but is there no way to stop the numbering e.g.
on page 34 and start again on page 120, when all the descriptive stuff is
over?

I know, I always try things that complicated :-)

GV doesn't like EPS?

2001-02-27 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

Never had any problems displaying my document in GV. But since I put my
figures to the doc GV starts making some trouble. The page-count stops
behind the first EPS-Figure and I can't view the following pages. The doc
prints out correctly. I've got the same "feature" using Konqueror to view
the .ps file. DVI display is ok.
I've tried to export the figures in any possible way from Freehand9/Win but
it is always the same. I could use DVI-View, but the viewer is quite
anacronistic, I think. GV is much nicer.

Anybody with the same effects w/ GV?

How to center section--headers?

overfull \hbox

2001-02-05 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

My document does contain so much overfull \hboxes and I don't know, how to
fix that. The normal way is to insert that special character "-" as a hint
for hyphenation (the german "Sollbruchstelle"), but LaTeX doesn't care in
most of the cases.
This behavior looks very ugly, especially in he bibliography. Any hints?

Hyphenation deos not seem to work well, may be you're in a
 two-column document ?
It is possible to relax the hyphenation control, but this must
not be done in gneral, only for special cases.

You should first check your latex install for a correct hyphenation
file (having it in the latex tree is not enough, the format
must have been remade with it).

Thanks, Jean-Pierre, but my hyphenation-"system" is OK. Hyphenation works in
most cases very fine, but sometimes it doesn't seem to work, even for my
single column text.

1.1.6pre3 now?

2001-01-09 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

As it seems, many people use 1.1.6pre3 yet. Because I'm writing my thesis,
it will be dangerous to switch to 1.1.6pre3 now, isn't it?
If I do a make install, the new LyX overwrites the old one, so I can't
really test 1.1.6pre3 without losing my stable 1.1.5fix2.
Is there a way to have both versions installed without interference?

Table-Import

2001-01-06 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

I have quite a lot of MS-Excel (sorry!) tables to import into my
LyX--Document.
There is a litle macro excel2latex which saves the current selction to a
.tex--file. But LyX 1.1.5f2 (SuSE7 on Intel) or maybe the laTeX has some
problmes with that files. Because reLyX has some problems with tables (as
noted in the man-pages), I have to \input the .tex--files. But in most
cases, I get 75+ errors during the latex--run.

What can I do, besides hacking all the tables once again into the document?
I think, the tex.--files from excel2latex are pretty fine. Unfortunately I
can't get reLyX to produce .lyx--files from my tables. That would be the
best way, because I could modify the tables in LyX then.

Is there a solution?

Best wishes,
Chris

RE: trouble error

2000-12-19 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

Last week I had some trouble with one of my Computers running LyX. It
appeared that the system was defective --- it was no LyX--Problem. After a
complete fresh installation of Linux, LyX translates my thesis correctly to
.dvi now. Sorry for that, because I wrote to the list without doing the
tabula rasa on the whole system before.

Regards,
Chris

I'm using LyX on my Desktop as well on my laptop to write my thesis. For
some days I can't run LaTex from LyX. It gives me two errors.
The first is in any case before the title of my report-style doc.:

 LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.
\begin {document}
You're in trouble here. Try typing return to proceed. If that doesn't
work, type X return to quit.

The second error is located each time at different positions in the first
lines of the doc. bringing the same requester up.

This occurs with 1.1.4pre3 (SuSE7.0-rpm) and 1.1.5fix2. My desktop-LyX has
no problems with the doc. I even use the the same configs for both.
I tried to reinstall lyX and latex, but no effect.

This behavior is completely annoying, because it happens just before the
finishing of my thesis. Maybe the Microsoft-syndrome strikes
 back, as it was
to expect on an ms-office-doc.? :-)

 Chris

if i understand you right, then you use two different versions of LyX.
One on your desktop and another one on your laptop, right?
Which versions do you use? There are some format changings in LyX.
If the desktop version shows everything fine it will be a good
idea to install this version also on your laptop.
Especially to avoid troubles while writing a thesis ;)

First the error occured with LyX 1.1.5fix2. This is what I use on both
computers. Then I deinstalled 1.1.5fix2 from the laptop and used 1.1.4 from

First the error occured with LyX 1.1.5fix2. This is what I use on both
computers. Then I deinstalled 1.1.5fix2 from the laptop and used 1.1.4 from
the SuSE-CDs. Now I am back to 1.1.5f2 on both computers.

2000-11-29 Thread Chris Schulbert

I've got a problem, when trying to get the french language in the menus.

like said in the customization file, i export the LANG variable :

 export LANG=fr

i use a suse6.2. Is there another thing to do. I compiled lyx with the
nls support like noticed in the customization file.

 Is anybogy got the problem?

Hi! I've got the same problem with the LANG=de_DE, etc. After updating from
SuSE6.2 to 7.0. The "old" system was german. After updating AND using my old
config. LyX talks in english to me and I am afraid NOBODY has an answer on
this.

margins with float-figure

2000-11-01 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

I've got a problem with float-figures. Some of my Figures extent somewhat
over my page-margins. I use 3cm for the left and the right margin for the
document.
On Herbert's LyX-Page, I found the following to change margins temporarilly:

Latex-Pre:

\newenvironment{myQuote}[2]%
   {\begin{list}{}{\leftmargin#1\rightmargin#2}\item{}}%
   {\end{list}}
in your text than

\begin{myQuote}{-2cm}{-2cm}
the text ... bla bla bla ... the text
\end{myQuote}

This works fine -- for the normal text, the margins are put away for -2cm
e.g., but floats don't care about that.
I think, because they're positioned by Latex, they can't "see" the
margin-changes. I use !hbtp, but no change.

The only way to fix it, would be to set the whole document to margin 1cm and
to change the text using the above Latex-Code.

But maybe, someone knows a better solution?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards,
Chris

Maybe a bug?

2000-10-25 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi! On Monday, I posted the problem on changing the skip-length in a
list-environment. Because LyX displays only positive values, even if you
typed -3ex e.g. for that in its paragraph-menu, i forgot to check the
.dvi-File. Guenter Milde has repyed on that problem.

So I tried again, and, YES, the .dvi-File looks fine.

BUT: If your (-2ex-vertical skip) list reaches the end of the page AND
you've got some footnotes on that page, they will crash somewhat with the
list-text. Maybe this is a bug? Don't know, if its a LyX or LateX-Problem.

Regards,
Chris

This works for enumerate, but not for list-env. Is there a
 chance to do
  this
  for list, too?

I can't believe it! Is there really no way to do this with a
 single line of
TeX-Code? Why the hell is it so different to finetune a list-env, when
  enumerate behaves so easy?

Why don't you do it in LyX? Mark your List, go to Layout|Absatzformat and
under Vertikale Abstände (über or unter) choose "Länge" and give
 a value in
the field beneath (like -2ex, say)

LyX does not recognize the minus and puts extra space in the screen output
but in the dvi-file its correct.

Re: Change line space in a list

2000-10-23 Thread Chris Schulbert

Is it an easy way to modify the line space in a list (enumerate or itemize
 enviroment) ?

When using an enumerate enviroment I obtain something like:

   1. Item one

   2. Item two

   3. Item three

But I want the lines be separated with single space, something like:

   1. Item one
   2. Item two
   3. Item three

try

1. \setlength{\parskip}{-3pt} Item one

in the first enumerate-line and in tex(red)

Tuning Description

2000-10-11 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

I'm doing my bibliography manually, no use of
bibtex, cause I already had the list in ascii-form.
So I include the file to my lyx-doc and change the
env. to description, which is what I prefer for layout. BUT: Description sets
all items bold. Is there a way to having these items in capitals? I think there
has to be a tex-code for that, but I don't know the syntax.

Any comments?

Is there a method to change this?

german keyboard shortcuts

2000-09-23 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

I have configured LyX 1.1.5fix1 to german language.
(LANG, bind german_menu, etc.). Now Lyx speaks in german to me. BUT: I can't use
the shortcut-keys for the menus any more. As I am writning on my thesis at the
moment, it is more than a pain to use the mousefor all the
menu-actions.

In addition, I can't get the acute-charcters to
work. I've got some french text in my thesis, but all the manual hints didn't
work for "é" e.g. The manuals are very
confusing about that matter. I have tried even to use LaTeX-Code, but Lyx
complains about that and will not display the .dvi.

I have configured my keyboard correctly using
xkeycaps and xmodmap.

My system is SuSE 6.2.
My condition is FRUSTRATED!

Maybe anyone can help?

Chris
