It is also the default length if you change for instance a hspace via context menu to "custom", etc. Thanks for the explanation. There are 2 issues with this feature: - when I install LyX 2.1RC1 (fresh installation without any previous preferences) I see in the preferences that the unit is CM. But when I insert e.g. a horizontal space and set a custom length the default unit is BP. The it CM is first used if I change it in the preferences, save and revert the modification back to CM. I filed a bug about this: http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/9053 - one can only choose CM or IN as default unit. Why not e.g. MM or PT? regards Uwe

Re: 2 questions about new preference features
I don't know what 1 is used for. I also don't know what 2 was originally meant for, but one use case in which I can see it being useful is when working on a document with children. Currently (version 2.0.6) when you close a parent document all of it's children are automatically closed as well, although it may be more convenient to work on some of the child documents without changing anything in the parent document (thus you wouldn't want it to "waste" tab space). This is different (I hope) from opening the child on it's own, because when the parent is open you can see all references macros etc. defined in the parent or in it's other children. I have recently been working on a project in which there was a parent document which only contained the framework of a book and included a macros file and the other content as children, and most of the time I only worked on one or more of it's children. Having it open but not showing could have been useful in that case. 2 questions about new preference features
I am currently updating the documentation of the LyX preferences and have 2 questions: 1. Under Language Settings->Language there is now a default length unit. What is this used for? 2. Under Look & Feel->Document Handling one can decide if the document is closed or hidden when its tab or view is closed. What is the benefit of hiding the document? thanks and regards Uwe
