Is the problem that you have no text classes available? If so, someone
else ran into this recently. We couldn't figure out what the problem
was, but he uninstalled/reinstalled both LyX 1.6.0 and MiKTeX 2.7, and
that did the trick. The bit about manpage.layout being borked still

Re: First time install problem

2007-09-14 Thread Dr. Werner Popken
You can take for example the Embedded Objects manual from the help menu as
 starting point for your
own book. It uses the document class koma-script (book).

Thanks a lot!

Again: Using Help/Embedded Objects I get an error box

Lyx: The document class is not available

elaborating that scrbook.layout is not available.

I managed to produce a simple example, though, and found with
document/settings that lots of classes are not available, among them
KOMA contrary to what the user guide states. I reset the document
class to book and set several other options like language. This way, I
managed to produce a PDF file.

Next, I experienced two more problems,

1) I get type 3 fonts in my PDF document, which means that they are
bitmaps giving an ugly expression. They should be type 1 fonts.

2) I can't manage to place a picture on a page and let the text float
around the picture. This is extremely easy with Word, but doesn't seem
to be a problem in scientific publications, so I doubted if there is a
solution. In http://latex.tugraz.at/fortgeschrittene.php#grafiken I
found

\usepackage{floatflt}

   \begin{floatingfigure}[r]{0.4\textwidth}
 \centering
  \includegraphics[width=0.35\textwidth]{./bild.eps}
  \caption{Das ist mein Bild}
  \label{fig:mein-bild}
   \end{floatingfigure}

or

  \usepackage{picins}

   ...

   \piccaption{Graz bei Nacht\label{graz-bei-nacht}}
   \parpic[r]{\includegraphics[width=0.4\textwidth]{./graznacht.eps}}

I guess there is no other way than hand coding, right?

The last time you wrote that this works now, so I don't understand what happened. Do you have the
file scrbook.layout in LyX's layout directory (C:\Programme\LyX 1.5.1\Resources\layouts)?
If yes, could you please log in as admin, and open an internet connection. Now start LyX by double
clicking on the lyx.exe, and reconfigure LyX. LyX will be opened with a console window where you can
see what LaTeX-packages are installed while the reconfiguration is run. What do you see there for
the document class scrbook? If there is a no behind the entry, you have either not set to
install missing packages on the fly in MiKTeX's settings (this is normally set by default by the
LyXWinInstaller), or you have a problem with your firewall; allow the latex.exe and pdflatex.exe to
connect to the internet.

LyX already supports this, these are wrap floats.

You need to clean up your system!, (having two MikTeX installations causes often troubles and LyX
1.5.0 was replaced immediately by LyX 1.5.1 due to a serious bug, so that this should not be used):

- Uninstall LyX 1.5.1,
- uninstall LyX 1.5.0,
- uninstall MikTeX 2.7 _completely_ (note that MikTeX 2.7 is a beta and not for
daily usage!),
- uninstall MiKTeX 2.6.
(You need admin priviledges of course).
- Restart your PC,

clicking on the lyx.exe, and reconfigure LyX. LyX will be opened with a console window where you can
see what LaTeX-packages are installed while the reconfiguration is run. What do you see there for
the document class "scrbook"? If there is a "no" behind the entry, you have either not set to
install missing packages on the fly in MiKTeX's settings (this is normally set by default by the
LyXWinInstaller), or you have a problem with your firewall; allow the latex.exe and pdflatex.exe to
connect to the internet.

1) I get type 3 fonts in my PDF document, which means that they are
bitmaps giving an ugly expression. They should be type 1 fonts.

Then choose a Type 1 font, see here:
http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/PDF

2) I can't manage to place a picture on a page and let the text float
around the picture. This is extremely easy with Word, but doesn't seem
to be a problem in scientific publications, so I doubted if there is a
solution. In http://latex.tugraz.at/fortgeschrittene.php#grafiken I
found

\usepackage{floatflt}

LyX already supports this, these are "wrap floats".
So before you proceed, please read the UserGuide and/or the EmbeddedObjects
manual.

Ok, I see lots of nos; how do I check MiKTeX's settings? Right now, I
have Lyx 1.5 and 1.5.1 and MiKTeX 2.6 and 2.7 -- maybe I forgot to
change MiKTeX's settings one of these times ...

Ok, they say:

* Palatino. To use this font, do not select Palatino in Layout?Document,
but rather insert in the preamble:
  \usepackage{mathpazo}% instead of package palatino
  \usepackage[scaled=0.9]{helvet}%
  \usepackage{courier}

insert in the preamble -- how do I do this? If I manipulate the source
file outside of Lyx, it is not shown in the source view, and the fonts
do not change. The source view is view only ... My changes of the
document text is shown, however.

No.

That is very strange, this file MUST be there after you have installed LyX.
It cannot be that this file is deleted.
Ehm, You know that you must install LyX as administrator?

You need to clean up your system!, (having two MikTeX installations causes often troubles and LyX
1.5.0 was replaced immediately by LyX 1.5.1 due to a serious bug, so that this should not be used):

- Uninstall LyX 1.5.1,
- uninstall LyX 1.5.0,
- uninstall MikTeX 2.7 _completely_ (note that MikTeX 2.7 is a beta and not for
daily usage!),
- uninstall MiKTeX 2.6.
(You need admin priviledges of course).
- Restart your PC,
- now reinstall LyX 1.5.1 using the complete version of the LyXWinInstaller (with an open internet
connection!).

Then it should work.

(menu Document -> Settings - Preamble)
But please read the intro and the tutorial manual before you proceed! It's all explained there, and
if not there, then have a look at the EmbeddedObjects manual.

First time install problem

2007-09-11 Thread Dr. Werner Popken
Hi all,

I am new to LyX, but fairly experienced with other programs. In
particular, I understand the basic concepts.

I installed from LyX-1.5.1-1-Installer-Bundle.exe on WinXP -
everything ran as smoothly as can be. Congratulations!

Next I took the offer to open LyX. The first message I saw was
a message box

OK

Ok, I went on to the recommended Anpassung only to get another
similar warning. Next I spent and hour and a half working through help
texts and Google findings to fix this, to no avail. So I decided to
join the mailing list.

The problem is not only to fix these problems, but to avoid them in
the first place. Why do you refer to things which are missing?

BTW, I plan to publish books with and without illustrations previously
published as articles online. I managed to produce a book as PDF
automatically for publication on lulu.com using PHP and pfdf, but
typografics and hyphenation wasn't optimal. So I looked at Scribus and
managed to produce a nice flyer, but found that this most probably
isn't the way to go for books. Automatic publication from database
contents should be possible with Scribus as well, but they only
support Python, and I'd rather not install and learn another script
language.

You need to install the LaTeX-package koma-skript to use this layout.

To install all LaTeX-packages needed by LyX,
- set in MiKTeX's settings the option Install missing packages on the fly to
yes
- open an internet connection
- reconfigure LyX (menu Tools - reconfigure)

Then it will take a while until all packages are installed in the background (up to several minutes,
depending on you internet speed). LyX will inform when the reconfiguration is ready.

When you install LyX using this installer:

this will automatically be done while LyX is installed, so that you start with
a full featured LyX.

an error message, it's a generic warning. Everybody sees that every
time they open the user guide.

Going back to your original post, it appears that the problem is that
LyX can't find the scrbook class, so it's substituting some other class
(article, I think) which creates problems because it lacks features from
scrbook that the user guide uses. So it's back to MikTeX's Package
Manager, but this time check for 'koma-script' (you didn't expect this
to be anything obvious, did you?). If, as I suspect, it's lacking,
install that, then reconfigure and restart LyX, and see if that helps.

Thanks Paul,

Oh, obvious once someone mentions it. I was poking
around the various directories trying to find an .exe

I have run Update and checked the Package Manager
which tells me that hyperref is installed. I have
reconfigured and exited - reloaded LyX. It still does
not work (see

I can see hyperref files in MiKTeX in a number of
folders (i.e. C:\Program Files\MiKTeX

loading.

Newbie windows install problem class scrbook is unknown

2007-01-17 Thread yanni papastavrou

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed lyx for windows:

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.4.3/lyx-143-5.exe

Prior to this, I had no earlier latex related software
installed. I selected all the default answers during the installation. I
installed on my windows XP latest and
greatest.

After the fresh installation, when I run Lyx, I selected
help-tutorial and was able to view the dvi for this without difficulty.

I then tried help-user’s guide and I get the error:

“Using the default document class, because the class scrbook
is unknown”

I then get a window full of multiple “Unknown layout” error
messages, each one referring to a particular layout. The title of this window
is “LyX: Parse errors”

And also, at the top of the User’s guide, there is a big
yellow message saying:

“To export this document as pdf, ps or dvi, the
LaTeX-package hyperref has to be installed.
This package should be part of all popular LaTeX-distributions”

Any help would be greatly received. I have tried many things so far, including
running: tools-reconfigure

But, I am confused as to why I am doing this, since during
the installation, I should surely have got all the correct dependencies that
are required? – Especially since I followed accepted all defaults…

Any help greatly received for a LyX newbie. It looks like a great piece of
kit. I am
just miffed that it won’t work “out of the box” when using default settings.

TIA,

Yanni.

Install the koma-script package. Your miktex installation should have a

Just ignore this, miktex should have hyperref installled, if not LyX will give

It seems that the version of libforms you are using is not compiled
for the right version of glibc. Where did you get it from?

I don't remember from which site I downloaded them. I have now removed the
libforms and reinstalled another set from the net.

Thanks for the help as lyx-1.4.1 is successfully installed.

jed install problem

According to the packages database jed-nox (= text version) is
available only as unstable.

I have configured fink to use unstable (edited fink.conf, then run
selfupdate, index and scanpackages). However, after this the list

So, what could be wrong?

I have confirmed that LyX can not find any document class. If I even
create a new file from a template it lists the templates and I can
chose one but when it opens the windows I get the same message.

Are you sure teTeX is installed correctly? (Can you compile
documents with article class from TeXShop, for example?)

Is LyX's PATH prefix set correctly? (LyX Preferences Paths
PATH Prefix -- should be set to:

/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-
current:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sw/bin:/opt/local/teTeX/bin

If that's all ok, try running Edit Reconfigure, quitting LyX, and
relaunching. Does that work?

When I bring up the Preferences the PATH prefix box was empty. So I
suspect that something went awry in the install procedure. Do you
need to get TeX installed and then log out and relogin to make sure
it can be found or anything like that??

And several Reconfigure, Quit, and Launches did not help so I think
there must be another problem.

When I try this the problem becomes evident. It seems that the
teTeX/bin path is not on my Path and none of the executables can be
found.

[mangrove:~] managan% cd Documents/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/lyx/

checking for a LaTeX2e program... (latex latex2e)
+checking for latex... no
+checking for latex2e... no
checking for a LaTeX - LyX converter... (reLyX)
+checking for reLyX... no

Should I add the relevant paths to a .cshrc type file or does that
not make it available to LyX since it is a gui app? There is a
.Mac_environment.plist type file as I recall that would make the
paths available to GUI apps. Is that the one I need?

So in some way the install process seems broken or lacks a suitable
warning about this

It sounds as if, quite evidentally, the class 'article' cannot be located
(either existence or paths to blame). I have an installation of LyX on SuSE
that broke over time so no matter what class I choose, it is always
said not to
have been found. Luckily, I still have a fully-functional Fedora

I suggest that you try to change the class of the document under Layout -
