Problem with LyX installation on Windows 11
When installing LyX on my Windows 11 system, the LyX installer claims to have found a LaTeX installation at the following location: C:\Users\TorquilSorensen\AppData\Local\Programs\MiKTeX\miktex\bin\x64 However, this is incorrect. Lyx 2.4.1 on Windows 11 doesn't find python
Hi! I previously used Lyx 2.3.7, which worked fine. After uninstalling that and installing 2.4.1, it doesn't work anymore. I have tried both the options "For everyone" and "Only for me" in the Lyx installer. The Python directory should be correctly included in the system PATH, because I can run python from the command prompt without problems, as you can see here: $ C:\Users\TorquilSørensen\AppData\Local\Programs\LyX 2.4\bin>python Python 3.11.1 (tags/v3.11.1:a7a450f, Dec 6 2022, 19:58:39) [MSC v.1934 64 bit (AMD64)] on win32 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> exit() However, when I run Lyx within the same command prompt, I'm getting the following: C:\Users\TorquilSørensen\AppData\Local\Programs\LyX 2.4\bin>Error returned from iconv EILSEQ An invalid multibyte sequence has been encountered in the input. I can confirm that I observe hangs when scrolling with LyX 2.4.1 and that the performance is much much better with current 2.4.2~devel. What's the latest "stable" version of LyX? I just discovered my LyX is 2.3.6.1 from 12/29/2020. What am I missing with my version? It seems OK to me, and it's what my distro gives me. LyX 2.4.0 was released in early June (and 2.4.1 in early July). It has boatloads of new features: https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX24 It can be downloaded from lyx.org. Since you are on Linux, it is easy to compile yourself, and even to install it in parallel to 2.3.6.1. (By default, the self-compiled version installs to /usr/local/, and this can be configured. You can also use e.g. --program-suffix=2.4 to have the binary be "lyx-2.4", and not just "lyx".) Just use a separate user directory with 2.4 (use the -userdir option when launching). 2.4.x can read older files, and export to 2.3.x format, but we do not recommend trying to move back and forth with a single file. The kind of 'round trip' does not always work well (depending upon how many of the new features you have used). If you decide to switch to 2.4.x, then of course you don't have to worry about the separate user directory, etc. Riki -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

Dear Jean-Marc and Richard, Thanks a lot for your effort. The freeze disappears after unchecking the word count and character count option in the status bar. Best, Hung-Tzu P.S. The example of "large" that we had was 1000+ authors, and it caused a crash of the whole session for the reporter. To see whether 10 authors is large, could you try to remove those particular entries from the bibtex file and see whether this helps? P.S. One more thing that I just noticed. The freeze of the main window does not occur exclusively for scrolling. It can also be triggered when clicking an item on the menu bar (e.g. File). The drop-down menu would freeze for a few seconds and go back to normal. Whether the main window/menu freeze or the freeze of the citation window occurs depends on the file (complexity). For a small/simple file (~700 words) with the same bibtex library (and some cited references with many authors) these do not happen. Is it a file that you can share with me? So you end up with that style and dark theme if your system is set to dark. You can avoid it by choosing a different ui style, which does not have a dark theme, in the preferences -> user interface -> user interface style. The only style *without* dark theme is "windowsvista" though, it was the default style on Windows in Qt versions pre 6.7. I usually compile with the newest Qt version for Windows, so LyX 2.4.0 and newer uses Qt version 6.7 and newer so that is why you get the dark theme now. -- Eugene -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

LyX 2.4.1 Released
We are proud to announce the release LyX 2.4.1, the first maintenance release in the 2.4.x series. We have fixed a number of bugs in this version. Most of these are minor, but there was one crash when deleting rows or columns from a table that has been fixed. There have also been some improvements to tab management. See the complete list of updates and improvements below for more. You can download LyX 2.4.1 from https://www.lyx.org/Download. If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the documentation that comes with LyX (under Help) and the LyX wiki, which you will find at https://wiki.lyx.org/. You can also send email to the LyX users' list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org). Bugs can be reported on our bug tracker (https://www.lyx.org/trac/) or by writing the developers' list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org). The LyX team. https://www.lyx.org This file describes what has been done in the preparation of LyX 2.4.1. All comments are welcome. What's new == ** Updates: *** * USER INTERFACE - Add plain single quote to menu (bug 13025). - In context menus, more items are now shown on top level. - Show full inset context-menu when clicking on text part of collapsible (bug 10370). - Allow relative statistics values in statusbar, improve update times for some UI and buffer operations. - The performance of LyX with large insets on slower computers has been improved a lot (bug 12297). - Fix crash with variable column width tables. - Add bindings for 'paste, join lines'. - middle-button pasting (in Linux) now preserves middle-button pasting (as does Edit > Paste since 2.4.0). * DOCUMENTATION AND LOCALIZATION - Clarify quote-insert LFUN. - Updates to Chinese (simplified), Czech, French, German, Hebrew, Brazilian Portuguese, Slovokian, and Ukranian translations. * BUILD/INSTALLATION - Fix cmake build with qt6 (macos), which did not include "plugins". ** Bug fixes: * * DOCUMENT INPUT/OUTPUT -Do not check for diverging input encoding if the files use XeTeX/LuaTeX - The g-brief and g-brief2 letter classes load babel internally. LyX now is aware of that. - Fix some cases where beamer breaks with the new cprotect mechanism. - Fix case where new cprotect mechanism breaks with caption. - Update acknowledgments handling in aastex63 layout (cf. https://journals.aas.org/aastexguide/#acknowledgments) - Make textstyle-update LFUN work properly inside equations. - Make buffer-reset-export LFUN work properly. - Remove redundant code from preamble of double column Hebrew documents (bug 12919) * USER INTERFACE - Fix crash when deleting rows or columns from table. - Avoid crash when InsetBibitem::updateCommand shows a dialog. - Set cursor font after pasting to PassThru (e.g., ERT) inset (bug 12592). - Do not ask about unapplied changes if dialog has been closed. - Fix wrong position of conversion windows of the input method (bugs 11723, 13054). - Speed up mouse movement when there is no selection (part of bug 13050). - Fix incorrect scrolling when using outline to jump to a paragraph (bug 10425). - Fix preview inset with XeTeX, and with RTL languages in general. - Respect change tracking in dash conversion mechanism (bug 13062). - The outliner option "Only output items" now works properly (bug 12981). - Show values of cross-references in tooltips (bug 8856). - Toolbars are now locked by default for new profiles (bug 11796). - Allow "longest label" to be empty (bug 11934). - Put new citation after selected item rather than at end of list (bug 12940). - Fix overflow of appendix red frame in document-bottom grey area. * INTERNALS - Fix case where insets do not have proper information about current buffer (bug 12682). - Handle deprecated Qt enum value. - Fix initialization of an internal value. - Fix "Unassigned buffer_" error with math references (bug 12947). - Re-allow the use of quoted argument to PackageOptions layout tag. - Fix crash when passing unknown value to textstyle-update * ADVANCED FIND AND REPLACE - Handle neg-spaces like normal space if searching without format. - No paragraph indentation in search and replace windows (bug 11555). * BUILD/INSTALLATION - Cmake build: Handle deprecated cmake versions. -- lyx-users mailing list lyx-users@lists.lyx.org http://lists.lyx.org/mailman/listinfo/lyx-users

This is a small glitch which will be fixed (again, only in LyX 2.4.2). In the meantime, you can either ignore the error or, to get rid of it, uncheck "use non-TeX fonts" in the MacrosStandard.lyx file, then set the encoding to "Unicode (utf8)" rather than "Traditional (auto- selected)" (as advised in my first mail), then check use-non-tex fonts again. The problem here is that LyX checks for the encoding also in the XeTeX/LuaTeX case where it actually shouldn't (since these file are always utf8 in the output). The encoding you can chose is the one of the generated LaTeX file. When using a child document, the master and the child should use the same encoding. An alternative fix (which would avoid the latter) would be to set the Encoding of your master file from "Unicode (utf8)" to "Traditional (auto-selected)". Or if you want to have both options, store a copy of the MacrosStandard.lyx file with utf8 encoding under a different name. The code that triggers this dialog is _in_ the document settings dialog. But I think I understand now that this can be accessed even if the dialog is not open. I will push what I think is a fix, but as LyX 2.4.1 has already been built, this will make its debut only in LyX 2.4.2. Meanwhile, if you can come up with a somewhat reliable recipe to reproduce this behavior, this would be highly helpful (as I cannot reproduce it myself). It returns nothing, but that is what I expected. 2.3.7 compiled the Customization document just fine and I have not uninstalled anything since I installed 2.4. Evidently, suffix.sty is part of the Bigfoot package. I installed it and everything is fine again. The forward search from Lyx to Skim does work. Hi Robert, I’ve just tried that with LyX 2.4.0 and it works on my system. I’m on macOS 10.14.6 (Mojave). I’m using a fresh copy of LyX 2.4.0 to the /Applications folder. Did you put your version of LyX into the default /Applications folder too? If not you have to fiddle with the settings for the path to LyX in Skim and you can’t get it work for more then one LyX install simultaneously. Hi Robert, Le 02/06/2024 à 08:24, Robert Betz a écrit : (3) There is inconsistency on rendering the maths equations in the Lyx interface -- sometimes they will not render at all and stay in the blue editing mode colout, sometimes they will render to the black mode, but the size is not the same as the size of the fonts set in the interface. A workaround is to increase then decrease the zoom level. The previews will be regenerated. (4) The positioning of display equations in the Lyx interface is to the left. Lyx 2.4.0 producing performing inconsistently on Mac OSX
I have Mac OSX 14.5. I have the latest version of MacTex installed. I have tried Lyx 2.4.0 RCx a couple of times but gave up because somethings were not working correctly. I was hoping that the release version would have some of the issues solved, but alas is did not. The issues I have come across are: (1) I have Lyx files that are fine under 2.3.7/8 and will not compile under V2.4.0. I get strange errors from the Tex compilation related to font issues and the compilation aborts with an overflow of memory. This does not occur on all files, but only on some. (2) The reverse search from the Skim previewer does not work on V2.4.0 (at all as far as I can see). The forward search from Lyx to Skim does work. (3) There is inconsistency on rendering the maths equations in the Lyx interface -- sometimes they will not render at all and stay in the blue editing mode colout, sometimes they will render to the black mode, but the size is not the same as the size of the fonts set in the interface. They are much smaller. On some files they render OK. Incidentally I am using the Euclid font as the font in the interface. (4) The positioning of display equations in the Lyx interface is to the left. The equation label font is very big and pushes the equations to the left. V2.3.8 has none of the above issues, therefore the Mac environment appears to be OK. LyX 2.4.0 Released!
Public release of LyX version 2.4.0 === We are proud to announce the release of the new LyX 2.4 series. After long 6 years of development the 2.4 series has a rich set of new features compared to the current stable series. An overview of the new features can be found here: https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX24 As this release ships with new features, we strongly recommend that packagers of LyX on various platforms and distributions read RELEASE-NOTES in order to get the new dependencies right. You can download LyX 2.4.0 from https://www.lyx.org/Download We hope you will enjoy the result! If a file from an earlier version of LyX is opened *and saved* with any version of 2.4.x, then the original file will automatically be backed up. The backup file will be found in the backup directory, if one is set under Tools> Preferences> Paths, or else in the same folder as the original file, if no backup directory is set. The filename of the backup file will be: ORIGNAME-lyxformat-NUM.lyx~ where NUM is the LyX format number of the original file. In the case of 2.3.x file, this will be 544, but in the case of older files it will be different. The file RELEASE-NOTES also lists some known issues and problems compared to the current stable releases (LyX 2.3.x). As with any major release, this one comes with a lot of new features but also some bugs. If you think you have found a bug in LyX 2.4.0, either email the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org), or open a bug report at https://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome . Please specify if the behavior you are reporting is different from behavior in a previous LyX version. If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the documentation that comes with LyX (under Help) and the LyX wiki, which you will find at https://wiki.lyx.org/. You can also send email to the LyX users' list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org).
