I installed the Windows version of Lyx on my machine. However, when I try to start up Lyx, I get an error message that says lyx wasn't able to find any layout description... Yes I do. It initially asked me about installing MikTeX and wanted to know the name of the local package it was located in (or something like that). Yes, according to that site, there are three versions to download. Are you using the one called lyx-1.3.5-win32-nc.exe? Also, latex.exe comes with miktex. If you can't run latex from any directory in your command prompt, I'm pretty sure you need to add the miktex bin directory to your windows PATH variable so LyX can find miktex. Yes I do. It initially asked me about installing MikTeX and wanted to know the name of the local package it was located in (or something like that).
