Don't know how much known this is: Apple provides a wonderful easy to
use profiling application for OSX, called Shark. You get it here for
free (maybe you have to register for the ADC website, but it's free):

  http://developer.apple.com/tools/download/

Shark is part of the package Computer Hardware Understanding
Development (CHUD) Tools

version 4.4.4 (DMG). You can see how it looks like here:

 http://developer.apple.com/tools/sharkoptimize.html

If you have performance problems, that's the tool to use to find out
where the cpu cycles are spent. I guess you need a LyX binary with
symbols inside, so unstripped.

Just for the info.

I've tried your new universal-test and the ppc version posted by
Gerard. I'm

using a 600MHz, 384MB ram, OS X 10.4.9 ppc machine.

Both versions are essentially unusably slow when typing in figure
floats. I
don't know what version of Qt Gerard used for compilation (probably
not
Qt4.3 since math preview display is normal size and the Times font
works

correctly). However, his version is faster at loading the program and
standard typing in a new document is almost normal whereas in your
universal
version typing in a new document without any figures or math is
still slow
and the program icon bounces several times while loading whereas
Gerards

version bounces two or three times then loads.

I've now dual-booted my Mac with Linux and I'll be using LyX in
Linux since
this slowness is less pronounced (although still noticeable). I've
found
Debian to be the most responsive when using LyX so far in my distro
testing.

I'm not sure if upgrading to 640MB would make a significant
difference or
not since it's still a 600MHz processor, if anyone thought it would
make a
truly significant difference I would upgrade. I'll probably just
plan on

upgrading laptops soon. It's time for an x86 Linux laptop :-}.

I have tested this on a new document as the typing lag I experienced

length and always.

Though I have to say that the startup time for the PPC-only Version

Would it be so bad to have two separated Versions for PPC and Intel

This note is for PPC Mac users only. (Intel Macs are not affected

LyX-1.5.0 RC 1 for Mac was originally released as a universal
binary, and that release was quite slow for PPC Macs. I have just
posted a new version that should improve speed on PPC Macs, and I'd
like for people experiencing speed issues with the original release
to try this one instead. It can be found here:

http://edisk.fandm.edu/bennett.helm/LyX/LyX-universal-test.app.zip

If you're willing to test, please report on the following:

1. Do you experience a lag between what you type and when it
appears on screen with this new version? Please try this in normal
text as well as in insets, like footnotes, and math and note
environments.

2. If you do experience a typing lag, please provide some detail as
to the circumstances you find it:

  * How big is your document?
  * Does it have equations? (Lots?)
  * Does it have figures? (Lots?)
  * When do you notice it most?

3. Provide some details about your computer: processor type (G3,
G4, G5) and speed, Mac OS version, amount of RAM.

If any of you are compiling your own versions of LyX, please
compare the new version I've just posted against the version you
compiled. Is one noticeably faster than the other? (Try timing how
long it takes to page down through the User's Guide, e.g. -- but do
it twice, reporting the times from the second run for each version
of LyX.) Also, please provide details of how you compiled LyX,
including:

  * configure flags
  * Qt version

Thanks.

Oh, you're right: There is only a difference at first time starting:
While the PPC version needs approx. 6sec the Universal binary takes
almost 20sec for a first time start.

All later starts of Lyx take equal time (6sec).

-- but do
it twice, reporting the times from the second run for each version
of LyX.) Also, please provide details of how you compiled LyX,
including:

  * configure flags
  * Qt version

Thanks.

Though I have to say that the startup time for the PPC-only Version
is shorter.

Does that happen only the first time you open LyX or all the time?
(If you open LyX by double-clicking a document read the first time
you open the document)
The reason I ask is that there is some caching going on so there can
be a big difference.

Oh, you're right: There is only a difference at first time starting:
While the PPC version needs approx. 6sec the Universal binary takes
almost 20sec for a first time start.

All later starts of Lyx take equal time (6sec).

This new PPC version works allright. it may be a little quicker than
the universal one, in particular for math previews, but I do not feel
a major change. However, I had not experienced a typing lag with the
universal version. One advantage of the PPC only version is that it
is slightly smaller.

Just for the info.

I've tried your new universal-test and the ppc version posted by Gerard. I'm
using a 600MHz, 384MB ram, OS X 10.4.9 ppc machine.

Both versions are essentially unusably slow when typing in figure floats. I
don't know what version of Qt Gerard used for compilation (probably not
Qt4.3 since math preview display is normal size and the Times font works
correctly). However, his version is faster at loading the program and
standard typing in a new document is almost normal whereas in your universal
version typing in a new document without any figures or math is still slow
and the program icon bounces several times while loading whereas Gerards
version bounces two or three times then loads.

I've now dual-booted my Mac with Linux and I'll be using LyX in Linux since
this slowness is less pronounced (although still noticeable). I've found
Debian to be the most responsive when using LyX so far in my distro testing.

I'm not sure if upgrading to 640MB would make a significant difference or
not since it's still a 600MHz processor, if anyone thought it would make a
truly significant difference I would upgrade. I'll probably just plan on
upgrading laptops soon. It's time for an x86 Linux laptop :-}.

Thanks for all the work,
Bob Lounsbury

And remember that compiling svn with the defaults compiles in a lot of
debugging information that can slow it down considerably. That isn't
true of rc1, or shouldn't be, but you might want to check your configure
settings, too.

Don't worry -- I'm stripping all that out to make it as fast as
possible (and those configure settings are specified in the
INSTALL.MacOSX file). The trouble is that when cross-compiling with
the same configure settings, the PPC version is much slower.
