In fact, I just tested this with a new document (LyX 2.0.1 on Linux Mint 11), and it worked fine with "/home/paul/Desktop/whatever" as the path for the link. ("Fine" means, as before, that Evince would not open the link, but Acrobat Reader 9 did by forwarding it to Firefox.) The PDF you uploaded before worked for me, so I'm not convinced this is an anomaly in LyX. It's very strange, though. If it were just one PDF viewer involved at your end, I'd ask if the PDF viewer was current, but IIRC you said the link was broken in multiple viewers (?). Paul
Re: lyx 2.0.0 URL error "unable to open external file" on Ubuntu 11.10 . File path is correct!! Solved
I solved it, the solution was really simple, but not at all obvious to me given how careful one must usually be with file paths in any *nix application. Most apps do not fill in anything for you. Knocking the leading / off the file path solved the problem. Instead of putting /home/foo/bar.xls in the Href dialogue box I put home/foo/bar.xls as the target file. All worked as it should. Do you knock off the leading forward slash off the file path when you use that feature? Just seems counter intuitive to me. Thanks for your help. Alasdair On Sat, 7 Apr 2012 14:07:31 + (UTC) Paul A. I downloaded your files, created a home directory for "badger" with a Documents subdirectory, and parked your .xls file there. Then I opened your PDF file in Acrobat Reader (without touching your LyX file) and clicked the link. I already had Firefox open. AR gave me the usual security warning, and then Firefox asked me if I wanted to open the file or download it. I opened it in LibreOffice Calc with no problem. So your PDF output file is fine. Are you sure that the link does not work on your machine? What happens when you click it in AR? Paul

There does not appear to be a space when it is viewed as you suggest. Have constructed a minimal example and attached both .lyx file .pdf file and .xls file . You seem to have an errant space at the start of the file path. Is it visible if you do View > Source with the cursor proximate to that line? If the space does not occur in the path as you entered it, I would suggest constructing a minimal example and posting it to the list. Paul

"Firefox can't find the file at / /media/Nano/Documents/tcm_files/foo.xls" It seems that lyx maybe passing an incorrect file path . When the link is clicked on in the pdf, Acrobat Reader asks for permission before opening a linked file and gives a file path: "file:%20/media/Nano/Documents/tcm_files/foo.xls" Here is the file path placed in the address bar of firefox by Acrobat "file:/// /media/Nano/Documents/tcm_files/foo.xls" Opening the .xls file (if it could find it) in firefox by Acrobat is no problem firefox just opens it in Libreoffice. I tested this by opening the .xls file from the "File" dialogue in firefox. Also for completeness, www links in the lyx created pdf work perfectly as they should opening a web page in firefox. I think this is a problem with Evince. I just tried this (linking to both a PDF and an ODS file). LyX exported my document correctly (using pdflatex). Opened in Acrobat Reader, both links work correctly. Opened in Evince, both links produce the error message you got. Paul
