Microsoft offers an equivalent functionality in their TweakUI series -- the
focus follows the mouse without requiring any extra clicks. This is called
"X-mouse", presumably because they few this option as something that
originated with X-window managers.

Sorry for coming in so late on this--I didn't follow the thread so my
thoughts may have already been presented...

Under Linux (at least) use a window manager which allows "sloppy focus"
with the mouse (personally I use Fluxbox)--a slight flick of the wrist
gives you the desired shift. Your hand is moving in the direction of
the keyboard anyway, so place the math panel accordingly at the edge of
the main window...

I'm unaware of what those on the dark side can do along this vein. ;-)
Granted it may seem a kludge, but in a way it fits the philosophy of
the system (using the tools available instead of trying to build a
bigger, fatter, covers-every-last-angle-and-facet app.).

Cheers,

I was a bit unclear here. It works, but not "nice": Of course you can
write \varphi, \surd, \rightleftharpoons, \eqslantgtr or \sqcup. However
for seldom used symbols it is hard remembering the LaTeX name (and spell
it without mistake).

Looking it up in a book or list takes usually longer than using the
math-panel, so switch-focus-after-math-panel-inserts would be a help.

Hm? It surely works with \varphi as well.

This works nice for often used symbols or the ones with (almost)
non-ambiguous names (\alpha...\omega, but not \varphi)

Another point is, that sometimes the keybord-shortcuts (or math-panel) offer
enhanced functionality (like marking some stuff and pressing M-m ( to get a
pair of () around or M-m f for a fraction with the stuff in the numerator.
Pressing \frac would replace the selection instead of puttin it in the frac.)

So the above is a feature-request, until it is solved (and for many cases
beyond this), Andre's hint is valuable and valid.

Learn to insert the symbols using the keyboard ;-)

Seriously: All symbols can be inserted by typing their LaTeX name, i.e.
\exists\alpha\in\Omega.

I solved this problem learning the Latex math command.
Infact when you are in math mode and typed a latex command (e.s. \partial)
then a space, it is rendered in their corrispective mathn symbol.

Switching from the Math panel window to the document window

2003-12-12 Thread Oreste Riccardo Natale
Hi all,

Maybe my question is only related to the way I would like to use Lyx,
instead of beeing related to Lyx usage: when I'm writing equations,
after pressing a button on the Math panel I would like to switch
automatically from it to the document window without explicitly clicking
on the document window itself, so reducing the number of times I have to
use to mouse.

Is there any way to do that?

I'm using Lyx 1.3.2 on Mandrake 9.1.

Thanks a lot,
Riccardo.
