Pedants welcome :)

And for the record, I was the one who first made the mistake of using
"16.4". Kim just copied what I put.

Thanks for the correction, John.

Kim,

Please send the file privately to me (rgh...@lyx.org), if that is
possible. I will be able to
figure out what is wrong pretty quickly.

Another option: Run LyX from a terminal and try to open the file. You
should see some
more detailed error messages. Post them here---though you may also be
able to tell what
is wrong yourself, once you see them.

2017-10-03 Thread Tim Q
Hi Scott,
Thanks for your prompt response. 1/ I'm currently using Ubuntu version
16.4.

2/ I created a file using Lyx version 2.0.8.1 which is my back up file.

3/ I installed Ubuntu 16.4 and Lyx 2.2.2 from Ubuntu software application.

Now I get this message trying to open my backup file.

"Myreading.lyx is from an older version of LyX and the lyx2lyx script failed
to convert it."

Kind regards,
Kim

Did you create the file using 2.0.8.1? Which version of LyX are you

There is no Ubuntu 14.0. Do you mean 16.4?

In addition, you can try to open lyx from a command line (x-terminal window)
and see if there is a more specific error message from lyx2lyx.

It is also possible to run lyx2lyx from the command line and configure it
with options (in Debian, it is not in the PATH, though, so you must call it
with the complete path):

  /usr/share/lyx/lyx2lyx/lyx2lyx --help

This is true, because the older lyx version cannot reliably handle
features added in a new lyx version.

Exception: the last maintenance release of a major release can open files
from the next major release.

OTOH, you can export files to older LyX formats with File>Export...

Advanced users can also just install a new lyx2lyx script for the old lyx.

I have found that the newer lyx versions open files created in an older
lyx version, but not visa versa.

The output that you show looks like Postscript and not lyx in any reasonable
way.

It doesn't matter if no one can help me with the problem. However, I
would like to know if I will lose old LyX files, be unable to open them

LyX uses an auxiliary program called lyx2lyx to convert the old formats and
until the moment we have a very good record. If there are any bugs we fix them
as soon as possible. I am not aware of any file where we have failed the
conversion.

Unable to open file........

2017-04-07 Thread Charlie

Hello All,

I have obviously made an error creating this file in 2007 and now I'm
unable to open it.

This message in Lyx:

/home/charlie/lyx/rec-reserve/letters/shire/07-08-shire-funding.lyx is
not a readable LyX document

In a text editor the message is:

The file
/home/charlie/shire/07-08-shire-funding.lyx||07-08-shire-funding.lyx
was opened with UTF-8 encoding but contained invalid characters. It is
set to read-only mode, as saving might destroy its content. Either
reopen the file with the correct encoding chosen or enable the
read-write mode again in the tools menu to be able to edit it. [end
quote]

Then I get this:

48> <234575E8A4EDC1B14EE078D78DCA5E48>] >>

startxref

291216

Dozens of these numbers

trailer

<234575E8A4EDC1B14EE078D78DCA5E48>] >>

startxref

291216 0 n

More numbers.

I attempted several encodings with the text editor but no joy. The
numbers changed a little bit but not a great deal.

Changing the file externally should work, but the .lyx format is

erroneous line / unable to open file

2008-08-25 Thread Ludwig Geske

Dear Sir or Madam,

somehow I managed to include a nomenclature command into the environment
of a Subsubsection. Now Lyx opens the file, but only till this erroneous
line. From this line on the content of the file is not displayed and if
I save the file, the text is gone.

I tried to change the file externally, but if I do so, Lyx does no
longer open it and tells me this is no lyx-file.

What can I do?

Regards,
Ludwig.
