I found the same thing with the M100 and T200 - the low battery indicator
doesn't come on until the voltage from the AA cells is below 4.8V so one day I
figured I'd try cutting the USB cable off a dead mouse at work and putting a
barrel plug on the end. I've been using it off and on for months - seems to
work great. (Caveats - it would be nicer if I had a 90-degree barrel plug like
the original Tandy power supply has, and of course if you unplug the cord from
USB without also disconnecting it from the barrel socket you'll be running on
your memory backup nicd/supercap until you notice)

It's amusing - people I show the machine to at work are amazed that it runs so
long on AA cells, but for some reason it hits much closer to home when they see
it being powered by a tiny phone charger cube. "That whole computer will run
off THAT?" Yes, with plenty to spare. Imagine how long an M100 would run if
it had an ipad's battery...

Re: [M100] Looking for the Barcode drivers on the 26-3846 cassette

2017-12-27 Thread Mike Stein
Glad to hear that they all work; yes, the D suffix is for the DVI versions.

I know what you mean about the original wand; they originally included a clear
plastic strip to put under the wand to minimize wear but as you say, the beam
is also a little weaker than some.

Always wanted to play with the 'CueCat' that RS gave away for a while;
apparently they're fairly easy to modify but I never got around to it. Never in
fact actually found a use for bar codes in my life other than playing around
with it, although the port itself has some interesting uses.

I assume you don't urgently need the manual addendum that went with the
supplementary drivers?

Anyway, enjoy!

  Mike,

I got the files to load and run: I2OF5, CDABR, UPCEAN and the basic demo
program RDBC2

There were also a second set: I2OF5D, CDABRD, UPCEAD and the basic demo
program RDBCD2

The second set I expected must be for the M200, as the HIMEM settings were
lower in RAM (around 56888) than the original M100 set (around 61788). However
in seeing your last response, these may have well been for use with the DVI
(driver names end with "D").

I tested the M100 drivers and they all work. The UPCEAN driver reads UPC-A,
UPC-E (both the single 6-digit code and the 6-digit code + the separated
2-digit extension), EAN-8 and EAN-13.

I have the original RS Barcode wand, but for normal use, I use the more
industrial Unitech MS120-NTCB00-SG as it has the sapphire tip that doesn't
really ever wear. Although the LED remains ON all the time, it is brighter than
the RS version (which was made by Hewlett Packard for the HP-41 calculator) and
seems to be better at reading lo-contrast barcodes as are often common on soda
cans.

The RS wand wears the plastic tip down with heavy use, which affects the
focal distance of the LED beam, and it is not sealed so needs the dust blown
out of it occasionally. Since replacement tips are not available, my RS wand
stays in the original package.

  Thanks again,

  Peter

I believe the 26-3846 already includes the DVI files for anyone who might
need/want them and I only mentioned the -1183A for completeness in case someone
out there has a copy; AFAIK there isn't a copy to be found anywhere.

Will try to collect the relevant manuals one of these days.

  Mike,

Deepest thanks to Rich Cini and yourself for the "digital Cassette" of
RS 26-3846. :-)

I down loaded the .WAV file, and after a few runs to get the volume
right, I was able to load the files to the M102. I will do some testing later
in the week, and if I have any problems, I will let you know.

Since I don't have (or ever intend on getting) the DVI, I will not
need the DVI version cassette.

  Thanks again,

Re: [M100] Rex ram/rom

2017-12-27 Thread Brian White
Rex is mostly just for roms.

You can *sort of* use rex as a pseudo ram expansion by using it's
backup/restore feature, but it's really not great for that, since you're
savingvand restoring backups not really switching between ram banks.

All the actual ram expansions I've seen are only for model 100 not 102,
because they have to plug in to the system bus and they use the 100s dip
socket not the 102's idc header.

I think ReMem had a 102 version but I've never seen one, but you would
still have another problem anyway:

Video expansion? Do you mean you want a Disk/Video Interface?

The DVI uses the system bus. You can't have both a DVI and a ram expansion
connected at the same time, as they both use the system bus, and there is
only one system bus connector.

Then again, if you have a DVI connected, then you have at least 145K of
disk space available outside of your ram.

I think the simplest answer for the software is to use ultimate rom 2, or
super rom. Both of those have their own versions of those standard apps,
and it's all in the rom so your ram stays mostly free for documents and
data. If you have a rex, then it's easy to load UR2 or SR, or both, into it.

Does a USB step up power cord still exist that will provide 6v center negative
with the proper plug? I know there was one available some time back but I
thought I’d check. I have not seen one lately.

It should work fine.

Note that there are at least 2 different (but nearly identical in function)
devices. The WIFI232 (http://biosrhythm.com/?page_id=1453) is the device that
has been tested most on various retro platforms. The WiModem232 *should*
operate in much the same way. I have a couple on order and arriving any day
now. I'll be testing them with my T100 and T102, and other platforms.

I bought this one back in January 2016 and I know that it works great with
my M100:

Unfortunately this specific one is no longer available, but there may be
others that are similar. I remember there being a polarity changing adapter
that was not needed.

Hi Jörg,

That should work. I havent used it myself, but I did discuss it with the
designer when he was originally prototyping it, and he said it would work with
the M100.
