Re: Steve Jobs; Let Us Never Forget!

2011-10-05 Thread chris hallsworth

Hi all.
It is very sad indeed to hear of the passing of the businessman who not
only thought about products for the general public, but also thought
about making such products accessible to the blind and visually impaired
community. Without him, we would be stuck in the microsoft world like
you say Lynn, and VoiceOver would be a dream and not a reality.
Microsoft is only now slowly catching up with Apple for competetor's
sake. But it may be too late. Who knows. Anyway, may he rest in peace
and my sincere condolences go out to everyone at Apple, as well as those
who loved and knew Steve.

Take care.

Hello everybody

It was with the greatest of regret that Gordon and I learned of the passing
away of Steve Jobs yesterday. Steve will long be remembered I think by each and
every one of us on this list; as, without his efforts, his vision and his
determination, we would none of us be in the position we are today. Whether we
use Macs, iOS devices or both, we are all beneficiaries of Steve's work.
Without it we'd all be stuck in the Microsoft net and all be paying through the
nose for what we often take for granted.

Steve, whether we knew him personally or not, has had a huge impact upon the
lives of millions upon millions of people around the globe. Were it not for
him, this list would not exist. The very fact that the servers powering the
group are running OSX is testimony to his efforts and I am sure we are all
deeply grateful for them.

May Steve rest in peace in a better place than this world; and may his legacy
continue to speak for him many years from now.

thoughts on iPhone 4S

2011-10-05 Thread william lomas
hi what do people here think then of the iPhone 4s? anyone going to upgrade
from the 4 if they have one?
to only get voice recognition a faster supposedly processor which will make
battery life worse in my view these benchmarks are nothing to go buy and an
eight mp camera when we have no OCR for it isn't worth it.
THe fact that the rest of IOS five can run well on a 3gs, or a 4, is testament
to it but i would like siri on my phone why should i spend more money just to
ge that?
all apple want is money I going to go i think with android next year
my upgrade is due next year not this.
if we can though use the apple remote and mike headphones to press a button and
say, text lyn to say i am running late as we on the road that's great but if
have to stop, take phone out pocket hold down a button and speak then put phone
away and continue on route it is silly but i do want a faster way to type as
texting take forever in my view on an ios device, but what are peoples thoughts?
maybe i am missing reasons to upgrade but the price is too high apple need to
live in the real world we are in hard times, who wants to spend money on a
phone that hardly offers anything new?

Re: BPS Software

2011-10-05 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Mike

Try the root of the site, for a list of their
products. Amongst which are sArchiver, the best archive tool on the Mac, and
sBackup another backup utility.

Don't buy directly from there or you won't get the discount if you opt to buy
anything. Let me know and I'll send the custom links for our members again.

There are trials of all of their software available.

I was very sad to read the news too. Lynne, you are so right, we would all be
stuck in the Microsoft world and paying out the nose had Steve Jobs not done
everything he has done. All I can say is a big, big thank you to Steve Jobs.
He will be sorely missed and forever remembered. May his soul rest in peace,
yes, certainly in a much better world than this one.

life is very precious, and we should all try to live it to the full and above
all, show respect to others, whether we like them or not. Show some gratitude
to those who go out of their way to help, be good to others and help each other
instead of ignoring and spreading hatred around.

Rest in peace Steve Jobs and thank you ever so much.

RIP Steve Jobs

2011-10-05 Thread Jane
It's official. Steve Jobs, 56, died today. I never knew the man, but I had a
lot of respect for him. I bought an iBook G4 back when Tiger first came out.
I used it to get through my last year of college, and it kept on trucking till
after the polls closed when President Obama was elected.

I've worked on a Mac Mini, an iMac, and now a MacBook Pro. I also have an
iPad. It's thanks to his vision and willingness to include us that we have all
this technology from Apple today. He'll be missed.

Just heard on the radio that Steve jobs has passed away, I think I wouldn't be
the only one if I didn't rais my hand to thank him for the wonderful work he's
done at Apple and for his visionary insite which has allowed me along with many
others to use a computer and other equipment right out of the box, a job well

Unfortunately that doesn't alter anything Zack. I've also played with the
various zooming options under the "view" menu, and while the point at which the
"more" sound occurs changes, it never seems to get the entire page squeezed in.
I'll ask a sighted colleague I think if the entire page is fitting onto the
screen.

Cheers.

Yes, the beta was released in July, and there are versions for both Mac and

Re: Reading PDF books with Ibooks

2011-10-05 Thread Esther
Hi Dane,

You can mail PDF files as attachments to yourself, then open them in iBooks, or
you can use Dropbox or MobileMe links to the files, or use direct download
links on a web page and have them open up in iBooks. If you want to do
something fancier, like use zipped or archived files, you can use a file
transfer app like Filer to open them, then transfer them to iBooks (or any
other app that supports PDF reading on your device). This has all worked for a
while for PDF files. The same methods work for ePub files since about April,
I think, when iBooks was updated to recognize ePub files. I've used FileChute
(paid program that I already had) on my Mac to send myself and others links to
ePub or PDF files on my MobileMe account.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

There's a program on the Mac App Store called iText Express, which among other
things is a good ePub reader.

Re: Reading PDF books with Ibooks

2011-10-05 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Dane,
Open iTunes and hit cmd-o to add files to your library. Select the file or
folder containing the PDFs in question and add them the way you would music,
and they'll appear in the proper category.
You can also open PDFs in Safari on the iPad, and they can be added through a
button on that screen.
Best,
Zack.

You just add them to your iTunes library and tell iTunes which ones to sort.
In my case, iTunes syncs all my ebooks. I haven't actually read a PDF yet, but
I plan to once I get my books organized. I have over 1,000 to sort into
collections.

Re: EPub..

2011-10-05 Thread Esther
Hi Dónal,

I'm using Adobe Digital Editions Preview in the 1.8 beta for ePub with DRM:
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/digitaleditions1-8.html
It will work with regular ePub, but since this is the first beta version with
accessibility support, not all features are supported (notes, etc.) and you
have to press the right arrow key to advance pages. (You can make the font
really small so that you don't have to press to advance as often.) You can use
VO-Shift-C to copy text. It's still a bit of a pain, so I would probably read
your DRM-free PDF versions with another app, if that's an alternative. Still,
it's great that they're working on supporting accessible reading of ePub and
PDF files with Adobe ADE DRM through this app.

Cheers,

Esther

Preview bug.

2011-10-05 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

I've meant to post on this for some time but I kept forgetting to do so.

So here's the scenario. I open a file in Preview (needless to say a PDF).
There are a few things:

1. I like to view documents in single page mode (makes referencing them in
bibliographic entries easier). However, each time I open the file the view is
set to "continuous".
2. I set VO to read each page. HOwever, the end of each page is actually cut
off and a brief high-pitched beep is heard. It's usualy only the last few
words, but can be as much as a line.

Anyone else encountered this?

Can't answer your last point.

Regarding when scheduling, by default both "Hijack" and "Record" options
are enabled, you must "Hijack" a source in order that it be recorded
with the "Record" function. If you press the "Record" button the
"Hijack" button will also be pressed.

 Hello all,

The first thing to say about this is that it is a very very interesting
concept indeed. However, given the person who designed it (T. V. Raman)
it's not really a surprise. He has always been extraordinarily creative.

Before proceeding, I should point out that the chrome add-on uses ctrl-alt
as modifier keys. These are the same as the VO keys.

 1. navigation.

I like the way that a granularity of navigation exists. For those who
haven't used Chrome Vox, you can essentially navigate a page by group,
object, sentence word or character. So you can skim (metaphorically) over
a page, find the portion you're looking for then "zoom in" (to plagiarise
 a phrase from the user-manual).

 2. The use of keyboard mnemonics follows a fairly typical process.
However, they've gone for letter sequences rather than single-keystrokes.
So for example, to get to the next heading, you press ctrl-alt-n (followed
by) ctrl-alt-h. On chrome-os netbooks, there is an equivalent to
"key-lock" on VO. I haven't used it on the mac yet, though I'm assured
 it's there.

 3. I find table navigation cumbersome. One can switch to a "table mode"
however, while in this, in order to move to adjacent cells, one has to
execute a command like ctrl-alt-t (followed by) ctrl-alt-(arrow); where
arrow is the direction you wish to move to. Now I understand the logic,
I'm just not a big fan.

What I think is missing from this is the ability to limit verbosity.
Chrome-vox uses earcons (like VO's sounds) to enhance the spoken
utterance. I don't like them and can't find a way to turn them off.
Secondly, each time I load chrome, the speech settings have adjusted
themselves back to default rate, volume and pitch. Now I'd be amazed if
they can't be set and stored, I just haven't come across the settings yet.

All in all it is good and interesting software, and I think that in future
iterations it will prove to be a good and viable alternative. For me,
Safari does the job adequately, but I'll keep playing with it. I can
easily see how people like Kevin would find it productive; I look forward
 to trying it with google-docs.

 All the best,

Hello,

It's actually both. It comes as part of the OS which is installed on various
netbooks etc but it's also a chrome extension available in the chrome webstore.

Can you confirm that Chrome Vox is part of the Chrome OS available on certain

Re: web design software

2011-10-05 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
hello Travis

To be absolutely and totally fair, it could very well be; in fact, it probably
is the case that I'm simply not familiar enough with the concepts. But I just
wonder what are the advantages in 'forcing' the dimensions of a table rather
than allowing the browser to automatically render itm, as most modern browsers
are able to do.

For example, here's the code which I used in a table that Gordon knocked up a
while ago manually and which I used in my recent Jawbone Jambox review. Note
that this table is designed to be accessible, which is why we use a top aligned
caption:

access_caption

header1
Header2
Header3

Item1
Item2
Item3

Now, that seems to work fine with obvious adjustments made so that the header
and data rows contain the appropriate values. as for the forms, they seem a
little more complex. But yes I guess the idea of creating a template blank form
is a workable solution. I do totally agree with you though about the various
viewing options for your coe. It also gives you the ability with a single
keystroke to call up your browser so that you can see it in a real-world type
of situation. So I would definitely agree with you that Taco does have some
very interesting and more than usable functionality.

But all the same, I think that an equivalent to Adobe DreamWeaver CS5.5 on Mac
OS X would be an invaluable tool. I'm toying with the idea of buying another
version of that actually because on other platforms it's quite accessible I
gather.

iWeb which, as we all know, is already nailed into its coffin, never was
accessible. Selecting templates without vision just wasn't possible and as far
as I am aware there was never any way to know where and how your code was being
inserted even if you got that far.

So this is actually still a market we're exploring to see if we can find some
kind of intuitive alternative. Sandvox works well for me personally; but I
won't use it because it isn't accessible for Gordon and those like him who need
VoiceOver support. Yeah; I could be selfish and say "well, I'll handle the
design work" and that'd be an end to it. But I don't see that as viable
because it doesn't allow you to interchange editors to work on your website.
You use Sandvox and that's an end to it. It also is another one of those
editors which introduces an awful lot of clutter in the way of images and
extraneous code.

I'm most definitely not an expert in the field of web design, and heaven forbid
that I'd ever claim to be. But I think I upset the president of the company
which produces Sandvox a couple of weeks ago when I made that point to him. Why
should every website you want to work on be littered with all that junk in the
background. Images obviously slow down the browser when it comes to processing
websites and the Sandvox solution which was to simply create a black and white
website is just plain stupid.

Lynne

Re: mud client for the mac

2011-10-05 Thread Travis Siegel

squidsoft.net's ip address is: 65.5.228.114.
You'd simply make an entry like this in the .muddle file

site="squid" addr="65.5.228.114" port="" init="squid1"
then you'd type (from muddle's command prompt)
connect squid
It would then connect to the mud, and run the init commmands you've
placed in the squid1 configuration section.

The squid1 entry might look like this:

in="squid1" out="guest^Jguest^J"

This would send guest twice after muddle connected to the mud,
thereby filling in both the username and password for the mud.
The carrot symbol is a shifted number 6, and the J (must be upper
case) is a line feed character, and is required after each command
you wish to send to the mud.
a carrot M might work too, but depending on the raw state of the
socket, it may or may not behave properly, so I always use a line
feed char instead. :)

Anyway, it's really not as complicated as it sounds here.
On the other hand, you can use telnet to make your connection too.
under terminal, open a new connection, and just type in (as you did)
mudname portnumber, and that will connect you as well, no need for a
mud client. The advantage of a client is the ability to have
triggers, macros, and let the client keep track of your login
information.
Telnet worked years before clients existed, and will probably still
work for years to come too, so if the whole mud client thing doesn't
work for you, that's ok, telnet can do the job.

Re: mud client for the mac

2011-10-05 Thread Travis Siegel
Muddle is a terminal app, this means that you need to edit terminal
files to use it.
Text edit will edit these files, but it will require a little manual
work.
First option is to load the muddle.sample into text edit, change your
aliases, triggers, and connections, then save it again, rename the
muddle.sample file to dot muddle (that's the word muddle preceeded by
a period) which will make it invissible to finder, so subsequent
edits will take a bit of fancy footwork. :)
As for using ip addresses instead of domain names, this is an
artifact of the way muddle connects to it's hosts, (again, something
I'll fix as soon as I get the other issues worked out)
To find the ip address of a mud, you'll need to use nslookup (not
recomended lately) or whois.
I prefer nslookup, because it returns *only* the ip address, where as
whois gives all kinds of other info as well, which isn't relevant to
your current case, but the advantage of whois is that it can be run
from a web browser or any other whois client (and there's tons of
them) so it is easier for folks to hunt down the required info.

There are examples of all of the things muddle can do in the sample
configuration file, so you can take those and modify them to do what
you like.
It's certainly not the easiest client to use, but the advantage is
that it loads, and gets out of your way, so you can do your mudding
without having to concern yourself with anything but the mud in
question.
I don't mud very often, but when I do, muddle lets me have multiple
muds open and keep track of all of them with a few simple commands.
That's my primary reason for using it.

Re: web design software

2011-10-05 Thread Travis Siegel

On Oct 4, 2011, at 3:07 AM, Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith wrote:

Have you got Taco to effectively function with tables and forms? We
find that in the case of tables, it appears to add a lot of
unnecessary clutter. But we haven't managed to get it to do
anything at all with forms which is a shame; because currently that
aspect of design is proving to be a pretty major stumbling block in
a project Gordon's working on.

Tables? Really?
When I want to add a table, I click the table option, fill in rows
and columns, and it produces a blank table with the dimensions I
requested. I'm not seeing any additional clutter at all. That's odd.
As for forms, taco html edit isn't very intelligent about forms.
When you select a form, you also need to select whether it's an
action, submit, a method, post, get, or the like. It's a bit of a
pain to get it to build a proper form w/o a lot of clicking on
options. As a result, I generally avoid taco's form generation, and
just paste in my own or write it from scratch as I go.
This is part of the reason I mentioned that taco html editor may not
be the best solution for folks who don't have a great deal of
experience with html editing, as it does tend to require you to know
more than an average html editor does, but for me, this is great,
because it means I'm not going to get extraneous html code inserted
into my document as so many other editors tend to do which irritates
me to no end.
I believe you can add costum snippets into the editor as well, so you
could have Gordon insert a blank form skeleton into the editor, then
select it from the list when he needed a form instead of having to go
through, and select all the parts of the form as required by taco.
Otherwise though, I find it an excellent editor, even for php code,
since it allows me to see my results right away w/o having to load
safari first.
Don't know if this helps, but feel free to write again if I left
anything out, or if something isn't clear.

Re: More On iOS List

2011-10-05 Thread Gordon & Lynne
Hello again everybody

Well, that brought quite a lot of response, so thank you. Actually, Gordon and
I both feel that there's no need for another iOS list, since this one already
has facilities for both the discussion of Mac and iOS. But we were approached
by a member, so we thought we'd give people the opportunity to respond.

So we'll leave things as they are, since this group already covers both iOS and
Mac OS.

Again, we were just acting on feedback but I don't think there's much point in
re-inventing the wheel. :)

Too many lists!

We already have at least 3 IOS lists as is.

As Mac and IOS devices are often integrated with each other anyway I don't see
the point of starting a dedicated IOS list.

I even wonder at times as to the point of a Mac-access list? The list content
is highly valued and its a good resource but what happens when someone wants to
use Windows or another operating system on their Mac? Well the list ain't too
good to them is it if they wish to rais points regarding Windows .

Hi!

You can also get YoruFukurou off of the App Store.

Additionally, here's the link to the application from their website.

I have been approached by a member with a view to establishing a list dedicated
to iOS-Access. Do others think it would be helpful to separate mac-access and

Thakns for advice.
Yes going back and selecting the language did then mean that the download
commenced. It is odd that a more helpful message was not produced by the web
page rather than a simple thanks for downloading a product that was not in fact
downloading. A simple error message saying please select language would have
been much less confusing.
