RE: latest update of ios

2011-11-11 Thread Terry Clasper
Hi.
Yep did the update directly from the 4S yesterday, process totally seemless
and since then performance far better although I cant comment on the battery
life as I've only had my 4S since yesterday.
I'm totally amazed at the speed difference between the 4 and 4S, very very
impressive.

2011-11-11 Thread Koji Matsuda (Verizon)

Wow, Ester,
that was a very informative email. Thank you. I fell in love with iPhone
about a year ago, and now I am thinking about getting a laptop of some kind
made by Apple. I was curious about Pages and it was great to know that
there are users out there to share. I was wondering whether to buy Pages for
my iPhone, and your info wasn'tnecessarily for the iOS, but again it was
very informative and I appreciate people like you who are willing to spend
time explaining things in detail.

Hi Catherine,

TextEdit does let you print results, and you can open Word documents that
are sent to you in this program. However, while it is easy to use, and
actually more powerful than you might initially think, it has some
shortcomings if you are looking for a word processing program to write
research papers with footnotes, for example. James Austin has done
periodic reviews of what's available in this regard. There are other good
accessible word processors -- a free program called Bean is one of them --
which also fall short in this regard, although they have several nice
features.

If you're talking about the most full-featured word-processors you
probably want to consider either Pages, which is Apple's iWork counterpart
to Microsoft Word, or Nisus Writer Pro, which is a third party program
that was recently revamped to version 2, and now is in a 2.1 release.
Both these programs can be separately purchased from the Mac App Store
(Pages for $19.99 and Nisus Writer Pro for $79.99).

There are several people on list who can give you a more detailed
evaluation of these products, and Nisus Writer Pro, in particular, has
many enthusiastic users in its new incarnation. I'll point you to an post
I wrote back in June in reply to Lynne's query about whether the new
version was worth getting:

• Re: Nisus Writer Pro; Query
http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/2011-June/013619.html

That post summarizes an extensive review of the product in TidBITS, and
excerpts key bits. The bottom line was that the writer considered it to
be an overall superior experience to using either Microsoft Word or Pages
for word processing, but he also made some very detailed comments about
topics like degree of compatibility with Word documents handed back and
forth between the two programs (mixed experience: both pluses and
minuses.)

Anne is probably the most expert user of Pages on this list. The current
version is Pages '09, and is overdue for an upgrade. My guess is that this
has been running late because it is being written to take advantage of the
changes that have been made in both Mac OS X and iOS on devices like the
iPad. This is true for the entire iWork suite (with counterparts to Excel,
Word, and Powerpoint in Numbers, Pages, and Keynote). But this is
certainly another viable alternative.

One of the shortcomings of the Mac App store is that it does not support
trial downloads -- developers can offer free lite versions of
applications, but they cannot offer a free application that later requires
you to pay an extra amount to keep it functional. So if you want to use a
trial download, you have to visit the developer's web site directly.

You can download a 15-day free trial version of Nisus Writer Pro from:
http://www.nisus.com/pro/

Apple used to have a trial download page for the iWork suite at:
http://www.apple.com/iwork/download-trial/

I don't know whether that still works. Now all the apps are separately
purchasable at the Mac App Store.

There was also a discussion about Nisus Writer Pro vs. Pages on this list
in July. You can read through the thread at the secondary Mail Archive
pages for this list:

• Nisus Writer Pro 2.0 Versus Pages; [Revisited]
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg00117.html

To read down the thread, use the access key shortcut Control+n to navigate
to the next post in the thread and Control+p to go to the previous post in
the thread. These access key shortcuts work for all browsers on different
platforms if you substitute the appropriate access key (e.g., for Internet
Explorer use Alt+n and Alt+p; for Firefox I think it is Alt+Shift+n and
Alt+Shift+p). Since we have a new Mac VoiceOver user who is sighted, I
should mention that if you started Safari without VoiceOver running, then
the access key combination is Control+Option+n for next and
Control+Option+p for previous. But if you started Safari with VoiceOver
running it is just Control+n and Control+p.

There is one other interesting new app for writing called Scrivener.
Rather than being focused on the generation of output, it's set up for the
use of people who write a lot, and want to easily access intermediate
tools like outlines and lists of ideas. Scrivener is also availab

I've had no trouble with the audible web site. If you could give
some specifics as to what your difficulties are, we might be able to
offer some assistance. I have several audible items, and downloading
them is simple enough, though it's not always obvious which one
you're downloading. because of the misaligned table layout. Other
than that though, I've had no issues. Searching and finding material
is easy enough, though I've not purchased anything in quite a while,
since my membership expired, and things are just too expensive w/o a
membership.

Help needed if possible

2011-11-11 Thread michael maslo
Hi list:

Was wondering if anyone could refer me to a place I can refer a developer to
for accessibility tricks?

Let me explain

I was in contact with the developer of the Atlantis mud client who stated she
wanted to make it accessible for voice over users but was having trouble with
knowing how to do this.

What I am trying to find out are places I can refer her to which may assist her
in this endeavor. this is a real opportunity I feel to get a mud client which
is fully accessible for voice over users.

She seems to be very receptive towards any suggestions or help.

thanks in advance

Re: Keystroke question

2011-11-11 Thread Esther
Hi Karen,

The quick way to close a window is simply to type the shortcut for closing
windows, which is Command+W. No need to navigate to the close button and
press it when you can do this in one step. Also, for an Apple Knowledge Base
article giving Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts, look at:
• Mac OS X Keyboard Shortcuts:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343

If you forget the location of this document, do a Google search for "Apple
support keyboard shortcuts".

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Differences Between Default VO and Compact

2011-11-11 Thread Sarah Alawami
I use the compact voice as it to me sounds a lot better and it is less resource
intensive. I run a lot of processes so for me the compact works. it's the same
on my iphone as well. I run the compact voice for that as well.

Oops? Forgot about that keystroke even though I use it. I use some apps wherein
cmd w does not work and you must navagate to the close button and press it.

Take care.

Try something like control option command home, that moves you to the
top most item in a window, alternatively, if your goal is to close the
window, command w will do the trick.

My sighted husband has been making noises about wanting an iPad. Other
family members and I want to get him one for Christmas. He isn't
particularly technologically inclined, but does have his own iMac and has
used my iPod touch some. His main reason for wanting an iPad instead of an
iPod Touch, is so that he can have access to a larger screen. I know he
doesn't want to have to pay extra for a data plan right now. besides the
price, what are the differences between the classic iPad and the iPad 2? I
know this isn't list related, so if any of you can shed some light on this
for me, I would be most appreciative if you would reply to me privately.

Developer's resources for iOS Accessibility [was Re: Help needed if possible]

2011-11-11 Thread Esther
Hi Mike,

You can point developers to the "Information for App Developers" page link at
AppleVis:
http://www.applevis.com/information-app-developers

I'll just mention a few of the resources linked there. There's a very good
blog article by Matt Legend Gemmell:
http://mattgemmell.com/accessibility-for-iphone-and-ipad-apps

In this blog post, he describes how easy it is in most cases to ensure
accessibility using the standard developer tools. It's worth a read even for
list members.

There's also the iPhone Blind Wiki:
http://blind.wikia.com/wiki/IPhone

The section "For developers" gives specific links to the appropriate documents.

I also posted to this list back in January about the Stanford University iTunes
U podcast series titled "Developing Apps for iOS" with the screencast that was
released on December 8, 2010. The name of the episode is "18. Accessibility on
iOS: Make an App for Everyone", and here's the URL:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/18-accessibility-on-ios-make/id395631522?i=89601580

The podcast series was about the details of writing iOS apps. This particular
episode featured Chris Fleizach describing, with step by step examples using
the developer's toolkit, how to add accessibility features to an example iOS
app.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Text editor

2011-11-11 Thread Esther
Hello Koji,

I haven't tried Pages on the iPhone, and I think the experience of using word
processors on iOS devices may still lag behind the desktop experience.
However, I'll point out one thing that may be of interest to iOS device users
about Pages on the Mac, and also Scrivener. Both these apps allow you to
export documents into ePub format, which you could then transfer to iBooks and
read on your iOS devices. As far as I know, there are no comparable Windows
applications (designed for regular users rather than publishers) that have this
capability. This is not a feature of the iOS version of Pages -- only in the
Mac OS X version.

While it is possible to use Stanza desktop (in either the Mac or Windows
versions) to convert between different document and eBook formats and generate
ePub files, this process is probably less robust than directly producing ePub
files from text in Pages or Scrivener.

I should also probably have added that Office for the Mac is not accessible at
all. Some people can use the Windows version of Office if they put Bootcamp on
the Mac and run Windows with an associated screen reader, or if they run a
Windows virtual machine through VMWare fusion. But Office for the Mac was not
written to comply with Apple's accessibility APIs, so it will not work with
VoiceOver.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: mac loosing connection to the wifi network when coming out of sleep mode

2011-11-11 Thread Esther
Hi Lyn,

I can't suggest a fix, but I'll just ask if you use Wi-Fi and connect to
different Wi-Fi sites without changing your location profile. What I've
noticed is that if I changed my internet connection type several times, either
by going between ethernet and Wi-Fi, or switching different Wi-Fi locations,
without changing location profile, that the behavior you outline may occur if
I've used my Mac laptop for some time without shutting down. (And
incidentally, I've only seen this behavior with my 2010 MacBook Pro, and with a
2010 MacBook Air that I set up for someone else -- it never happened on my 2008
MacBook.) What is even odder, is that if I am using terminal I can connect out
of my laptop with ssh. I just can't connect through Safari, and if Safari
doesn't connect, my mail won't update. (I don't have to force quit Safari -- a
simple quit will do, but I do have to reboot to get the network connection
working again.)

This doesn't seem to happen if I don't change my Wi-Fi source, or if I create a
separate location profile for each different Wi-Fi connection and change
location profiles.

Maybe someone else on list can comment on a possible solution.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I have a similar issue. Could someone explain to me what you mean by changing
your network profile? I have seen this in system settings, but I don't
understand it.

Changing AppleID while migrating from a 3GS to a 4S.

2011-11-11 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings all,

My Mother has a 3GS running IOS 4.3.5 and just received her 4S, and keeping in
mind that she is one of the least tech sabby people I know, I'm trying to make
the migration process as painless as humanly possible, and save as many steps
as possible for when I can tend to them in person. Actually this will benefit
me as well because if I dared admonish her to press any key she really is one
of those people who will hunt and peck around for that specific item!!!

Another complication is that since she can no longer receive email at the
address linked to her Apple ID I want to switch that without screwing up her
access to the apps she previously purchased.

Her machine is vista, but I doubt this will affect the order of events that
will need to take place? My goal is to take the absolute minimum of steps, so
as not to want to kill her from 1000 miles away. I had her install the latest
version of iTunes, and back up her 3GS. Now, would it be necessary for her to
change her Apple ID, or can this wait? I realize that she won't receive
receipts from the app store, but my real concern is that there does not seem to
be a way to change this on the phone once its set. If the change would take
affect later painlessly I'd rather not have her worry about that now. Same
goes for iCloud and upgrading the firmware on her 3GS. I wonder if I could
just have her attach her 4S via usb and restore from her older firmware 3GS
backup so as to recover her old environment and save iCloud and AppleID
migration for later?

TIA for any/all suggestions and best regards.

Hi, if you go to iTunes on the computer and under your or in this case her
account you can change your apple ID and password as well as other things
and this should not make any difference as you are not creating a new one
but modifying the old ones. But to be sure I would call or write Apple
support. I sure they would be willing to help. HTH

Still wonder if I can have her do the setup and then simply restore from
her

older firmware 3GS in order to recover her contacts and apps.

Best regards.

Hi, if you go to iTunes on the computer and under your or in this case
her

account you can change your apple ID and password as well as other things
and this should not make any difference as you are not creating a new one
but modifying the old ones. But to be sure I would call or write Apple
support. I sure they would be willing to help. HTH

Subject: Changing AppleID while migrating from a 3GS to a 4S.

Greetings all,

My Mother has a 3GS running IOS 4.3.5 and just received her 4S, and
keeping
in mind that she is one of the least tech sabby people I know, I'm trying
to
make the migration process as painless as humanly possible, and save as
many
steps as possible for when I can tend to them in person. Actually this
will
benefit me as well because if I dared admonish her to press any key she
really is one of those people who will hunt and peck around for that
specific item!!!

Another complication is that since she can no longer receive email at the
address linked to her Apple ID I want to switch that without screwing up
her
access to the apps she previously purchased.

Her machine is vista, but I doubt this will affect the order of events
that
will need to take place? My goal is to take the absolute minimum of
steps,
so as not to want to kill her from 1000 miles away. I had her install
the
latest version of iTunes, and back up her 3GS. Now, would it be
necessary

for her to change her Apple ID, or can this wait? I realize that she
won't
receive receipts from the app store, but my real concern is that there
does
not seem to be a way to change this on the phone once its set. If the
change would take affect later painlessly I'd rather not have her worry
about that now. Same goes for iCloud and upgrading the firmware on her
3GS.
I wonder if I could just have her attach her 4S via usb and restore from
her
older firmware 3GS backup so as to recover her old environment and save
iCloud and AppleID migration for later?

TIA for any/all suggestions and best regards.
Geoff

Re: mac loosing connection to the wifi network when coming out of sleep mode

2011-11-11 Thread Lyn & her faithful furry friends
Hi Esther,

No I do not change location profiles, in fact I do not even know what that is.
It just happens when I reopen the led in order to use my mac again after it's
been to sleep. I only connect to one wifi network.

Thanks for your email anyway.
