Re: voxie recorder question
Hi Paul, To transfer your recordings from Voxie recorder via wireless, first make sure that your iPhone and computer are on the same wireless network, then double tap the Recordings button (third of five buttons at the bottom of the screen, and just above the Home button). If you are starting from the screen for a specific recording with the six-pack of control keys for Record, Play, Erase, Title, Categorize, and Status, followed by the playhead position indicator, you'll have to first leave this screen by double tapping the Cancel button at the bottom left, just beside the Actions button that you can use to email your recording. Then, depending on how you navigated to that screen, you'll either already be in a screen listing your recordings or you'll be able to navigate there via the Recordings button. If you navigate to the Recordings screen via the buttons, select your category, which can also be All Recordings, and double tap it. Then, on the screen listing your recordings, there will be a Voxie Sync button near the bottom right corner of the screen, just above the row of five option buttons. Double tapping this button will give you an info screen that will tell you the IP address to point your computer's web browser to in order to access and transfer your recordings. This will be the four digit IP address of your iOS device -- the same one that would show up in the main settings menu under the detailed WiFi information for your device -- followed by a colon and the port number 8080. So, for example, my screen tells me to visit the web address: 10.0.1.3:8080 in my web browser and double tap the Finished button at the bottom of the screen when I am done. On your computer, in Safari, Chrome, or whatever web browser you're using, go to the address bar with Command+L, then type in the address that was given on your Voxie Sync screen, e.g., 10.0.1.3:8080 in my case, then press return. You will see a screen with a list of your recordings and their titles, dates, sizes, etc. from which you can select recordings that you want to download on your computer. When you're done just go back to your iPhone screen and double tap the Finished button to get out of the Voxie Sync screen. Recordings are done in AIFF format, so you'll have to import into iTunes and convert this to mp3. Voxie lets you specify the Audio Quality of recordings under the last item of the Settings screen, but if you change this from Normal - 8kHz to one of the higher quality settings (up to CD Quality - 44kHz) the sizes can get rather large. I wrote up some detailed notes about using Voxie over two years ago. Apologies to Lynne and Gordon for referencing the Mail Archive posts on another list, but this predates the existence of the archive for this list, so I can't point to the posts I wrote about Voxie on this list. Here are the links: • Tips for using the Voxie Pro app for recording on the iPhone/iPod Touch http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg14822.html • Re: Tips for using the Voxie Pro app for recording on the iPhone/iPod Touch http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg14841.html • Voxie Pro Recorder - how to delete recordings http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg15111.html These outline using Express mode settings (recommended), the process of transferring recordings through Wi-Fi (your question), using the position slider to review recordings, or to change the point at which you want to append to an existing recording, and a few other items. Some of the instructions were replies to Windows users, so if there are explicit shortcuts mentioned for importing to iTunes with Control+O, change the use of the Control key (for Windows iTunes) to the Command key (for Macs). Re: Quick time 7 and VO
Hi Karen and Chris, I assume that Karen is using QuickTime Player 7 because she wants direct access to the A/V control window and also to do AppleScripting controls for things like faster playback listening of podcasts and audiobooks, which you can't do with the current version of QuickTime since Snow Leopard. Either that, or she may have purchased QuickTime Pro for the additional authoring options in an earlier version of Mac OS X. I've only been using QuickTime Player 7 through AppleScripts/Automator workflows, but I just checked trying to start the play button with VoiceOver, and there is a bug with using VO-Space. If I route my mouse cursor to the play button and use VO-Shift-Space to click on play, then the track will only play for as long as I continue to hold down the VO+Shift key controls. This seems to be one of those instances where you need a hardware click to work the controls. If you're set up to turn mouse keys on and off with 5 presses of the Option key, then just toggling mouse keys on and pressing the i key when your mouse cursor is focused on the play button of QuickTime Player 7 will work. This is my standard work-around for a hardware click. Alternatively, if you're using the TrackPad, and have routed your mouse cursor to the Play button, you can simply double tap on the TrackPad to start playing if TrackPad Commander is off. (Again, somewhat weirdly, I can't naviga te to the play control with TrackPad Commander on and start playing with a double tap.) This is in Snow Leopard, by the way. Once the track is playing, I can toggle on the A/V control window with Command+K and interact with the slider to control speed. For those of you wanting to use QuickTime Player 7, here's the Apple Knowledge Base Article on Installing QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v.10.6 or Later that has a download link for Lion users: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3678 Probably obvious that I'm mostly using iTunes to play. You can also use VLC (which also lets you control play speed). Other people are using Cog. HTH. Special Characters with VoiceOver
Hi everyone, As you might know, Mac OS X has a ton of special characters built in, including the currently hugely popular Emoji. Emojis are, to be brief, Japanese emoticons or pictographs. Hundreds if not more of these exist, and an emoji keyboard can also be added to iOS which permits you to switch to it like any international keyboard layout. However, in the case of OS X, you have to drag them from the character pallet into any text field. While this can of course be done with the mouse, I haven't found a reliable way of doing this with VoiceOver so far. The characters won't show up for VoiceOver except the currently selected icon, so I'm wondering if anyone has actually found a successful way of using these. This of course does not just apply to Emojis, but any character in the CHaracter Pallet. I may just have missed the solution. I can do this with the mouse, but if VoiceOver tries to do anything with these they don't even show up anywhere. I'm hoping someone can help. Thanks! Re: voxie recorder question
Hi Esther, Many thanks for the information on how to transfer recordings from Voxie on the iPhone to iTunes on my iMac. It all worked as you describe. I now have to play the piano a bit better! I will also have to acquire an audio editor for my iMac so that I can split a single recording of multiple songs into separate recordings for each song and to also remove those annoying hesitations while I find the correct chord! Can you recommend an accessible audio editor (I do not have any audio editor installed)? WIll the audio editor work with the AIFF files created by Voxie? I imagine I would need to edit the source audio before converting the result to MP3 which presumably the audio editor would do. Many thanks for your help. Paul Hopewell On 23 Jan 2012, at 12:18, Esther wrote: Hi Paul, To transfer your recordings from Voxie recorder via wireless, first make sure that your iPhone and computer are on the same wireless network, then double tap the Recordings button (third of five buttons at the bottom of the screen, and just above the Home button). Re: Text files on the iPhone
Hi Paul, There are lots of note taking apps for the iPhone that will integrate with Dropbox, and Sarah's suggestion of Plain Text or Notesy include two good choices. However, I'm going to suggest that you use an app called Simplenote instead, along with a free Mac desktop client for notes called Notational Velocity. If you want to, you can also have this arrangement set up to sync with Dropbox. Simplenote is optimized for text notes of the form of your TXT files and it is the only iOS note app that I'm aware of that supports searching both for notes that match your search terms and for finding matching positions of text within the individual notes using VoiceOver. I think we discussed this on list earlier -- at least I recall an exchange with Dane about Simplenote vs. Evernote that is in the archives: • Simplenote vs. Evernote [was Re: Printing from my Ipad] http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg03148.html With the basic free Simplenote app you get a secure account for your notes that can be accessed through the Simplenote app on any of your iOS devices, or through a web browser. Whenever you open the app on an iOS device with network connectivity all your notes get updated, and then you're able to access all content locally (without a network connection). If you're away from your computer, but have access to a web browser on another computer or device, you can log into your secure account and also access all your notes. While I think there's a limit on the number of notes you can create in the free account over a period of time, in practice I don't believe you ever would hit the limit. If you want to enter notes from your computer, you can use any of the Desktop clients (or even, I suppose, open the files in Dropbox, if you have it set up that way -- but the Desktop clients like Notational Velocity have much nicer features and shortcuts for creating, searching, updating, and managing your notes). I think the reason Simplenote hasn't caught on more with visually impaired iPhone users is that most of them are using Windows, and someone told me that the various available Simplenote Desktop clients for Windows are not accessible. That's not true on the Mac side, and there are a number of clients that are accessible, with more being added. But I've been using Notational Velocity, which some Mac users have been using just for note creating regardless of the iOS devices. I'll excerpt from a blog post that I found about using Notational Velocity. I thought it was pretty funny that the user had a free Simplenote account just so that he could use the automatic syncing and online access, even though he didn't have an iPhone (and stated that he would use the app on the iPhone if he had one). I think this guy went a bit overboard on Notational Velocity, but here's the description. The URL for the full post is: http://mnmlist.com/nv/ begin excerpt mnmlist: using notational velocity These days I use the simple Mac program Notational Velocity to write nearly everything — notes, lists, todos, ideas, blog posts, book chapters, rambling rants to the government, and so on. I noted this in a feature Shawn Blanc did on my Sweet Mac Setup (and indeed it is sweet), and several readers asked for an elaboration – how do I use NV? It’s not complicated. Notational, as many of you might know, is a lightweight program that does something very simple: • It allows you to write text. • It saves these texts automatically — you never have to press Save. • It lets you find these texts very easily through a search bar that displays matches as you type the search, very similar to Google Instant. The last part is the magic. In the location bar, you just start typing, and instantly whatever you’re looking for appears. Also if you start typing a name of a new file you want to create, you just press Return and the new file is create — no need to go to “New File” or something like that in a menu. And by learning one keyboard shortcut — Cmd-L to instantly go to the “location bar” — you never need to use the mouse. Just type Cmd-L, start typing your search or new file name, and press Return when you’re done. Then start typing or editing with the keyboard. It’s extremely simple, but it works better than any other text editor I’ve used, and so I decided it would be all I use. I haven’t looked back. My Setup I’ve set up a couple things worth noting: • Under Preferences/Notes/Storage, I’ve set it to store notes as plain text files. This allows me to email individual text files to people if necessary, to open them in other text editors, and to access the files from my phone if needed. • I also have it synchronizing with Simplenote’s online service. I don’t use Simplenote as I don’t have an iPhone (if I did I would) but I like having all my notes backed up and accessible online. You can do this under

Re: Notebook app
Hmm, I know that Caroline likes iA Writer, which exists as a Mac app and an app for the iPad, but doesn't have an iPhone version. It might be helpful to know what features you would prefer, in order to make suggestions. For example, I never use the ability to select different fonts in Elements, which some users of that app like. I also know that Simplenote doesn't offer very large fonts for low vision users, but I don't use that feature. Some people like the ability in Nebulous Notes to access any folder in your Dropbox, but others dislike the fact that it won't automatically sync and save notes unless you explicitly perform this function. Quite a lot of people like Notesy. You can also custom configure the on-screen keyboard, but I find this a bit of overkill. I realize this is very personal. Hopefully, you can read comments about apps, and decide what would be a good match to your preferences. For example, I are primarily about regular text content (no formatting), and having very fast, stable, automatic syncing. I don't care about font features, and I like having access to word count, etc. I also don't mind using keyboard shortcut based navigation on the Mac. I know that's not true for everyone. For Paul, with the Dropbox based note applications you'll probably also want to get the free Dropbox app for your iPhone. HTH. Re: Tax software?
Hi Zack, If you're asking about US tax prep software, you might want to take a look at taxact.com. It's web-based, obviously, so you'd beed to feel comfortable with your personal information being out there in another part of the ether. I found it to be accessible with VO last year, but I haven't yet gotten started on this year's returns so am not sure it still is. . If I remember correctly, you can actually do a complete return online for free, but the cost comes when you file your return through taxact. They also have state returns. Hi James, Yep, iCloud works quite well for me. The key is understanding what it does. In a nutshell it creates a separate account for you to use with Address Book or your iOS devices. Re: Can anyone recommend an app for recording on IPhone and IPad.
Hi Annie, YOu are doing it right. I think Voice over is the problem. In most cases when you are on a item that can be changed voice Over says something like button or adjustable But, for some reason In List Recorder in settings the items don't say they are buttons or adjustable, but they are. Place your focus on the level indicator, it probably says 22 KHZ. double tap on it and you will be able to change the level from a low of 8 KHZ to a high of 44 KHZ. You can do the same thing with the audio type which is the item before the level. Just double tap on it and you can change it from the iPhone format to .WAV. I'm working on a podcast that shows all this but I'm having problems with my Mac Book, and have not been able to finish. I hope this helps. Thank you an advance. Best regards Annie. Den Jan 22, 2012 kl. 10:37 PM skrev Eric Caron: Hi Annie, If you are looking for a way to have List Recorder recordings be done in different levels you actually can do that. Go to settings and tap on the recording level and you will find it is adjustable. The same is true of the type of recording. For example you can change it to .WAV. And you can change the Hertz from 8 to 44. You can also change to stereo if you have a external microphone. Is that the level adjustment you were missing in List Recorder? I have also found an app, that I will try to figure out, if the developer wil change a few things, so it will become accessible. When I have got an answer, I will tell more about it. Best regards Annie. Den Jan 22, 2012 kl. 5:01 PM skrev Eric Caron: Hi Annie, Courtney and others, Courtney had asked about getting the text from List Recorder to the computer. I found the answer and in typical List Recorder fashion it is easy. When you create a List recorder item it can have audio, a title, and text. If you want that information on your computer you can move it in a few different ways. the easiest I have found is to: Open the item tap on the actions button tap on email the title of the item becomes the subject, the text area becomes the body of the email, and the audio is a attachment. send it to yourself and you are all set. Remember the audio is in the iPhone default format so if you are using a PC you may want to change the recording default in settings to .WAV. Annie, I've been reading your posts for a long time and never picked up that you were using English as a second language! I've been studying French for a few years now and could never communicate on a French email list! I look forward to your future posts. Though I have both recorders you are now using I currently only use List Recorder on a regular bases. If I can help please let me know. I could offer you my first podcast but it is rather elementary even describing how to download the full version and how to do simple things like create lists and check and uncheck items. If folks want it I can offer it to Gordon or just put out a dropbox link to it. Oh! to use the email function you will need the full version of List Recorder. Best. eRic Caron On Jan 22, 2012, at 6:29 AM, Annie Skov Nielsen wrote: Hi. Thank you to all of you for suggesting apps for recording. I have played a little with list recorder now, and it is a very great program. What I really like is that I can have some text in the same window as I am recording. Sorry for the misspelling i did in a previous mail, english is not my primary language at all, I am danish. Best regards Annie. I'm in the process of increasing my skills in this App and have started a series of podcasts designed to walk through the features. Once I get a few more done I'll let the list know. I've only finished one so far. I've given it to Blindcooltech.com but I'm concerned they may not be
Account Creation Information Needed
Dear Listers, I've been having some persistent problems with my 2 year old Mac Book Running Lyon. I noticed recently that when I logged into a different account The errors did not seem to happen there. I've spent time on the phone with Apple and with friends but the problems persist on my system. I seem to remember Esther and others discussing creating another account and working inside it rather then the main administrative account. Is it possible for me to create a new user account and have my programs all available to use? I dread having to locate all my license keys again So if i set up a new account Can I just transfer in the data and get back to work or is this going to be crazy? For example what do I do about iTunes, VM fusion, I'm pretty sure I can handle setting up Safari and Mail accounts again. Will things like my Info Vox voices be available and ready to go on a new account? Suggestions on dealing with this process would be appreciated. I don't even remember how I built the accounts I have! I think I followed directions from this list! Re: wish there were a easy way to tag mp3s than in i tunes
Does iTunes have any way to automatically get file information for a file like Winamp can? Seems like it will only do that for files purchased from iTunes. This is annoying.
