ONE SMALL GRIPE RE: IOS5.1

2012-04-23 Thread Gordon Smith

Hi all

I have one small gripe regarding iOS5.1 and I'm wondering whether it's me just
missing something. I do not see a way to have a different signature set for
each mail account on iOS5. Again this could be user error, and I hope it is.
But it does seem strange to me.

I'm currently relying on my iPHONE 4S FOR ALL MY NEEDS, AND IT WOULD BE HELPFUL
IF ONE COULD USE MULTIPLE SIGNATURES.

Multiple mail signatures in iOS 5 [was Re: ONE SMALL GRIPE RE: IOS5.1]

2012-04-23 Thread Esther
Hi Gordon,

Multiple signatures for your different email accounts under iOS 5 are still not
supported, but I can suggest two different work-arounds.

First, iOS 5 supports the creation of keyboard shortcuts. If you go to
Settings > General > Keyboard there's a heading for "Shortcuts". The first
entry under "Shortcuts" gives an example: "omw" for "On my way!" If you double
tap on this sample entry, you'll view the detailed shortcut screen for the
example, with text fields for the phrase "On my way!" and for the shortcut
assignment "omw". There's also a description "Create a shortcut that will
automatically expand into the word or phrase as you type". You can make any
editing changes in the text fields for the shortcut and phrase, then double tap
the "Save" button in the top right corner. Or, you can double tap the
"Keyboard, back button" at the top left corner of the screen to return to the
keyboard settings screen.

Just after the sample "omw" shortcut is the "Add New Shortcut" button, which is
also the last element on the screen. So you can always navigate to it with a
four finger tap on the bottom half of the screen. Double tap on this button,
then type in the phrase you want to shortcut in the text field. Then flick
right when you're done to type in the text for your shortcut abbreviation.
Double tap the "Save" button in the top right corner.

So the way this could work is that you might set up your basic signature in
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Signature (where the default says "Sent
from my iPhone"), and then customize each additional line you'd like to add by
typing your shortcut.

The main drawback of this method is that you still have to type one shortcut
per line of expanded text.

The other option that I use is to use TextExpander Touch ($4.99 by
SmileOnMyMac) to expand text. You can define multi-line snippets in this app,
and download the basic predefined snippet definitions. Then, if you type
"ddate" ("date" with an added "d" at the beginning), it will expand to the
current date, and in the format that you set up. You could have a multiline
signature that you define as "ssig1" (starting with double letters for you
snippet shortcut definitions is good for avoiding confusion with real words).
This lets you customize everything. The main drawback is that iOS apps like
Mail are sandboxed, so you would have to double tap the button to copy to
clipboard, then use the App Switcher to switch to mail, and then paste. Or,
you could compose mail in TextExpander and send it out directly from there, but
that doesn't let you read through your mail and reply.

I'll just note that TextExpander's snippets for HTML and CSS programming are
really clever, and that most good notes, Twitter, and messenging apps will
support TextExpander so you can compose using your custom-defined snippets
within those apps. As for HTML coding, the control sequences will expand and
leave your insertion point between the control elements if you use the
TextExpander HTML snippets. So you don't have to type out starting and closing
elements by hand.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: ONE SMALL GRIPE RE: IOS5.1

2012-04-23 Thread Sandy Tomkins
Hallo Lynne,

Sorry, my explanation was very bad, I was using the onboard keyboard! OK,
what I meant was this: Gordon doesn't need any special app, just go into
setting/general/keyboard and flick down the screen, you will find something
called "shortcuts" (I think that is what it is called) in this section you can
choose to compose a block of text, say, a signature and associate it with an
abreviation. So, I, for example have my full contact details which will be
added to whatever I am writing when I write my preset abbreviation. Just a
suggestion, use something unusual, like, zzz so you don't end up writing it by
mistake and including info you don't want including by mistake.

Hope this helps.
Sandy.

Re: Speeding up the Mac voice

2012-04-23 Thread Esther
Hi,

I'll just add that some apps, like Adobe Reader, completely ignore the speech
rate settings in System Preferences when using the system voice. You have to
find and set the voice rate within that app's preferences, since otherwise the
text-to-speech voice is maddeningly. Actually, Adobe Reader is the only app
I've found to do this, and the only reason I can imagine for having to use this
application is if you need to read a document protected with their DRM and
absolutely have to use the app. Even when the document is "displayed" under
those terms, it may be inaccessible to VoiceOver, in which case you'd be much
better off just screen capturing the images, sending them to an OCR program,
and reading them with something more accessible.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Ester,

Just an observation: The snippet I have set up using the
settings/general/kayboard/shortcuts is about 8 lines long and works fine. So,
maybe, this could be the easiest way to go?
Good luck, Sandy,

Re: ONE SMALL GRIPE RE: IOS5.1

2012-04-23 Thread Esther
Hi Lynne and Sandy,

My post showed up after Sandy's, but it contains full instructions for defining
shortcuts under Settings > General > Keyboard in the first part. I also
outlined how this would work under TextExpander Touch for iOS, since you'd have
to double tap the "Action" button and choose the option for "Copy All Text" (or
"Send Email" or "Send Message" if you're sending an email or SMS from within
the app) to copy to clipboard. The problem is that you'd have to copy to
clipboard, then use the App Switcher to switch back to mail and paste in the
copied text. Every app I've seen that tries to deal with multiple signatures
appears to make you paste in the copied text.

TextExpander Touch on the iOS might still be useful to Gordon if he's working
with coding, since the snippets allow for the coded bits that precede and
follow commands to be inserted around your current insertion point position.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Sandy,

Sounds good. I think when this came up in the earliest version of iOS 5 there
may have been a limitation in multiple lines?

Re: Having Trouble With iTunes, Please Help!

2012-04-23 Thread Esther
Hi Desi,

If you're interacting with a playlist can you use VO-backslash to collapse or
expand it? The backslash key is the rightmost key above the return key on
English language input keyboards. If a device like an iPhone or iPod is
connected, you should automatically be focused on it. Also, you can reach your
Devices by using item chooser menu. Typing the first few letters of "sources"
will give you a list of source categories like Store, Library, Genius,
Playlists, including Devices, although if you have a lot of items in your
sources table you may get the iTunes busy message.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Gordon,
I don't believe there has ever been a way to have different signatures for each
account on the iPhone. I think setting up keyboard shortcuts, as others have
suggested, would be most helpful.

Re: best voice recorder for mac

2012-04-23 Thread Travis Siegel
I agree with sara, quicktime will work just fine for that, You
shouldn't need the pro version just for that, but if you find you
like to edit the lectures, or combine classes, then an upgrade to pro
may be worth the 30 bucks, but for just recording lectures, the
version that ships with osx is perfectly fine.

Re: ONE SMALL GRIPE RE: IOS5.1

2012-04-23 Thread Gordon & Lynne
Hi Timothy

Before I go any further, I must ask you and all to please excuse my frustrating
lapses of memory and concentration just at the moment. They are one of the
side-effects of the drugs I'm having pumped into me daily just now. So, I
apologise in advance for any obvious oversights.

I am, for instance, struggling to remember how I go about getting Text Expander
for my iPhone. I don't currently have a Mac or PC with me where I'm currently
located. So I will have to try and effectively re-learn how to use the app
store etc. on an iOS device. All I have here is my iPhone 4S.

Again, my apologies to all. If I cannot fix this issue myself tonight I'll
just have to let Lynne do so when she comes over tomorrow. But I will try.

Thank you to all who have contributed to this thread. I shall respond to all
messages asap.

Best,
Gordon

Re: Reformatting Question

2012-04-23 Thread Travis Siegel
Formatting drives on the mac is most certainly possible, and
relatively easy.
First, you need to decide if you want the files to be accessible from
both windows and mac, or just the mac.

If you want them accessible, you'll need to use fat32 file system.
If windows compatibility isn't an issue, then use mac osx extended
(this is ext3 for those techy types) You also have the option to make
it case sensitive or not (I hate case sensitive file systems, so I
always say no, but your mileage may vary) Disk utility is used for
this process in most cases, though it can be done from terminal as
well for those criminally insane types like myself.
Anyway, simply select the drive in the outline view, then partition
and format away. If you simply want to reformat (and not partition
again) then select the volume on the disk instead of the disk
itself. Then, simply click format, and select your format type (it's
going to be under options) then you're all set.
If this isn't detailed enough, let me know, and I'll try to break it
down a bit more, but I think this should be sufficient to get you there.

Hi Krystal,

There should be an option to just update the built-in presets from that

dialogue box and Handbrake will update its built-in preferences and you should
be able to use it again.
