Re: intro and switching from windows/jaws to mac/voice over

2012-04-25 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Laurel

My name is Lynne, and I'm one of the list owners. :) I'm going to try and
answer your questions but first, I should tell you that I am not visually
impaired, although I have a very keen interest in accessibility.

On 24 Apr 2012, at 19:02, Laurel laurel.stock...@gmail.com wrote:

1, what were some of the most important changes from using jaws to
using voice over that you who made that switch had to get used to?

My first piece of advice is to try and forget the concepts of Windows and Jaws;
many of them do not apply. Do not expect things to behave the way they do under
Windows because really it's a different operating environment in many respects.\

2, what are the biggest things I should know about switching?

Again, forget about JFW, and allow yourself to be flexible during the learning
process.

3, what are the best web tutorials for learning voice over?

That one I cannot answer; but there are some very good guides built into
VoiceOver itself. For instance, try pressing Control+Option+Command+F8, which
will bring up the quick start guide. It will give you exercises to follow which
should help you learn the basics.

4, if any of you used Kurzweil1000 for Windows, what did you do for a
mac? Are there any other OCR programs that work with voice over and
are as good as Kurzweil?

There are a number of OCR programmes for Mac; but be mindful of the fact that
they are not written along the same principals as K1000. Therefore, there's far
less hand-holding. But you could try either ABByy FineReader Express by Nuance,
ReadIRIS Pro, or VueScan. I forget who develops VueScan but a google search
will find it for you.

The process isn't as seamless as K1000 but again, it's worth investigating
because one can achieve excellent results with a Mac and a scanner.

5, I have office for mac, how vo accessible is this and what can I do
to make it more accessible?

Unfortunately Office for Mac is not accessible at all.

6, this is a mac question in general, what programs did y'all use to
run windows programs on your mac, did you all use boot camp or
something else and what's the cheapesst/easiest?

It depends on how you want to do it. If you want your Mac running OSX and
Windows together, then try VMWare Fusion from http://www.vmware.com/fusion/
which will allow you to run a virtual machine and is totally accessible.

If you want Windows to run naively then you'll need help to set it up because
as with any PC there's no talking or accessible installation process.

Please don't be afraid to ask questions on list; that's why we are here. Also,
feel free to use the list archives, (detailed below) where you'll find a number
of discussions regarding what you've asked. Please also be aware that we have
strict policies regarding the discussion of off-topic things like Windows and
JFW. Anything on the Mac side is fine; but if you want to discuss Windows with
us, feel free to join one of our sister groups: Techno-Chat which you can join
by sending an email here:
techno-chat-requ...@techno-chat.net
or Window-Access, whose subscription address is:
windows-access-requ...@techno-chat.net

I hope some of this proves helpful.

Lynne

Hi,

Regarding ram, I really need some. Can anyone recommend a good third party
provider where I can get ram for a 2007 iMac? This one only has two gigs of ram
and the VM runs slower than it should. I wonder if Newegg is good and if I can
get it relatively cheap. Getting eight gigs would be nice because the Mac could
then use four gigs and Fusion could use four. That might be rather pricy though.

 Windows .
You can associate files on the Mac with windows programs if that is what you

with the windows version of Word. So pressing command O to open the document
in Mac finder will start Microsoft Word under fusion with the file already

The aim of fusion is to make Windows instantly integrated into the Mac and
does a pretty good job of this. There are some steps with sharing hardware

There are a couple of caveats . Make sure you have security software, anti
virus firewall etc running under windows. Although the Mac is a much more
stable and safe environment the Fusion version of Windows is just as
vulnerable to viruses as normal windows. You can set up fusion not to share
files with the Mac if you are really worried about thisbut I do not go
that far. I d, for convenience have all my document folders available on
 both Mac and fusion.

Because of this you may want to back up your windows once you have
everything set up as you want it. . Doing this on the Mac is ridiculously
easy. You just copy the virtual Machine file with command c in finder and
paste it somewhere as a Backup, say on an external drive. You can also have
time Machine on the Mac do this automatically for you but I prefer to keep
at least one known stable version of Windows backed up separately from time
machine. If you do get a virus in windows then just delete the infected
virtual machine file on the Mac using command delete. Now simply copy back
your backed up version into the Virtual Machine folder to return to normal
within a couple of minutes of the file copying across. Goodbye to all the
 Windows virus hassles.

Also if you intend to use Fusion a lot I recommend you get as much physical
Ram as you can for your Mac. Do not use apple for this as third party
 providers are much much cheaper.

same cd or do I need to buy windows for mac.

I will definitely learn voice over, that's the reason I switched. I
just think it would be helpful for me if I could switch to JAWs and

calender

2012-04-25 Thread Mark Furness
What do I need to change in order to have calendar announce the dates of the
events I put into it?
For some reason
it stop reading them as I tabbed through the events/reminders in my monthly
view.

Re: calender

2012-04-25 Thread Paul Hopewell
HI Mark,
I find that the week view is much better than the month view. When I used the
month view and tabbed through the calendar items I found that some items were
not announced especially for days on which there are multiple items. With the
week view I can tab through all the items including items on days where there
are multiple items and items from multiple calendars. I set the calendar
preferences to display event dates and times so that these are spoken as I tab
to each item.
Hope this helps

Re: default email address

2012-04-25 Thread Bryan Jones
You didn't say what device, OS or Mail client you're using, so I'll assume Mac
OS Lion's Mail.app.
Try going to Mail Preferences / Composing / Send New Messages From, and select
the account you want to send from.

HTH,
Bryan

Re: running windows programs on mac

2012-04-25 Thread Travis Siegel
Hmm. I never had trouble copying text from web pages if I was in dom
mode. I usually used groups mode though, and if the text I wanted to
copy crossed groups, it didn't always work well, but vo-enter to
start highlighting, then vo-enter to stop highlighting, then command-
c to copy the text always worked for me in snowleopard and up.
(haven't used lion, nothing here that will run it)

Re: softcon yahtzee game

2012-04-25 Thread Travis Siegel

Grr, did it again. :)
re-uploaded the game (forgot to use binary mode when uploading the
file, so file got corrupt. No documentation with it at the moment
(that got corrupt too) but the game is there, and it should work,
though I don't remember if I compiled it as a universal app last time
or not, so may not work on some osx versions, but I figure folks will
let me know if it doesn't. :)

Anyway, there ya go, hth.
again, the url is
http://www.softcon.com/mac/games/
Softcon yahtzee is up there for the download now. Sorry for the
hassle, and the lack of docs, but it's pretty self-explanatory.
