Re: Mac mini July 2011 screen question

2012-07-12 Thread Diane Bomar
I purchased my Mac Mini in October 2011, and can usually use it without the
screen. There is the problem of VO not loading automatically, when a monitor
is not attached, and somethimes preferences being busy, and unable to clear.

It would be great for someone who is more expert on this subject, to compile
a list of what doesn't work correctly without a monitor attached. I am
taking one-on-one lessons at the Apple store in Denver, and have the good
fortune of working with an instructor who, though fully sighted, uses VO all
of the time. We usually sit in comfortable chairs out in the mall, where it
is quieter than in the Apple store. There are small tables and electrical
outlets, and she uses a headphone splitter, and no screen. We seldom run
into problems.

Hi listers,

If all goes well I just purchased a late July 2011 mac Mini. It comes
with full size keyboard and magic mouse and two additional 4 gig sticks of
ram. so my first question is does this mini need a screen to function
correctly? If so I will want to start bargain shopping soon.

next question is, are there folks out there using this model and do you
have any good or bad feedback for me? It came with Lyon and currently has
2 gigs ram but I will put in the 8 gigs when it arrives.

Tips on mid 2011 Mac Mini's wanted.

Nope. When i launch the itunes app store and view my purchases, i see update
buttons and that's it. No hide buttons, so tabbing through won't work either.
Anyone else got an idea? I'm out. There's got to be a way to access these.

Interesting. Yeah I was using vo keys. I don't know enough about the mouse keys
to even try and use them lol!

Here is the recording I did regarding this.

I'll try the tab thing and see if that works.

Take care and be safe.

Can you not use mouse keys for this function? I'm referring, of course, to Mac
OS and not iOS. But I think that once you set it for your account not to show
these items it should synchronise across your devices. Just a thought. I seem
to remember that so-call "Hover" items are known in Mac OS as "Clickable" even
though that term is technically incorrect. The actual name for "Clickables" is
"On-Clicks".

Lots of websites use on-clicks these days so I simply can't believe that
there's no access to them. In fact, I just tried the app store and I find that
if I tab between purchased items, there is a "Hide" button which I can press
using the space bar and then all is well.

I have a solution that I found out accidentally, but it is not cheap.

I have an airport express that I use to stream to my stereo in another room.
If you set itunes to play only from the express you still get voice over etc
coming from the mac, while music plays elsewhere.

Re: Naval Combat

2012-07-12 Thread Esther
Hi Krystal and Matthew,

Naval Combat is an accessible iOS battleship game, which can be played either
as a single user against the program on an iPhone or iPod Touch, or in group
play through the Game Center. I hadn't actually tried this game until Krystal
posted her question about using it on the iPad. I downloaded this app onto my
iPad by treating it as though I were doing a new purchase from the App Store.
The behavior with VoiceOver is odd. I was able to get this into full screen
mode, but although the game displays in portrait mode, just like for the
iPhone, VoiceOver announces this as "landscape" -- even when I have orientation
unlocked when I start this up. Further, in order to flick to the controls I
have to flick up (instead of right) or down (instead of left). But the
descriptions are still for the portrait mode play. This is extremely weird. I
think that someone who actively plays this game, and who also has an iPad
should write to the developer.

Matthew, the game has a board or 10 rows (labeled 1 through 10) and 10 columns
(labeled a through j) on which 5 ships of different lengths are placed either
horizontally or vertically. You'll hear announcements like "ship, aircraft
carrier, vertical, from i3 to i7" or "ship, battleship, horizontal, from c4 to
f4" that announce the random placement of these ships on your board. The
positions and orientations of your ships are hidden from your opponent, who
will try to launch hits at various squares on your board in attempts to get a
hit on one of your ships. You, in turn, will move about your board, firing in
an attempt to sink his ships, at their unknown positions. When you get a hit,
you then try to follow up by striking adjacent squares until you cover all
parts of that ship. You need to decide whether the ship is horizontally or
vertically oriented, based on your current position on the board, and the
positions of your previous misses or strikes. You each get points for each
successful strike. When you sink a ship, you'll be told what type of ship you
destroyed, and the positions of your strikes. Each round ends when either you
or your opponent succeeds in sinking all five of the other's battleships.

HTH. Here's the URL if you're interested. It was free for the day on July 4,
2012, so I posted it to the list. Hadn't tried playing this myself until
Krystal's question.

Krystal asked about contacting the developer for iPad use, and according to
their support web page, you can write to the developer at:
navalcom...@mindrecursion.com
They also have a twitter account: @mindrecursion

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Can VO speak page numbers while reading a pages document?

2012-07-12 Thread James AUSTIN
Hi TJ

As you read down your document, VO will announce the number of the current
page. You can also create a table of contents, which I'll come to in a moment.
However, the current level of access in Pages with VO, does not, as you've
noticed, extend too far. Hopefully, this will change with the imminent release
of Mountain Lion.

To create a Table of Contents, you first need to turn your section/chapter
titles into headings.

1. Press Command+Shift+T to show the Styles Drawer.
2. Stop interacting with your document and use VO+Left arrow until you find the
Styles Drawer
3. Interact with the Paragraph Styles Table
4. Use VO+Down Arrow until you find Heading
5. Press VO+Space if you want to use this Heading. (Below this one are other
heading levels)
6. Navigate to Shortcut Key which as a submenu. Here you can choose from the
available F keys.
7. Once you've set your headings, stop interacting and navigating back to your
document.
8. Once you've found the appropriate chapter and heading titles, simply press
the relevant F key.
9. Create a blank page for your Table of Contents
10. Press Command+Option+I to bring up the Inspector.
11. Select the Document Radio Button Then select the TOC tab
12. You need to select the the various heading levels in the table. This should
then create your TOC.

Hope this helps

Aww. I'm sorry to hear that! Both of my characters, Eponine and Ramie, are
official newbie helpers, and especially lately, 1
of them is around for at least a few hours every day. If you'd ever want to
give it another try, feel free to email me and
I'd be happy to log 1 of them on to help you. Also, a lot depends on when you
gave it a try. They now have a completely
redesigned newbie area called Pumpkin Town. I prefer the old newbie area
myself; that's what both of my characters used, but
I created characters just to learn about pumpkin town, and it really isn't that
hard. Now, I have fairly decent mental maps
