Hello Patricia Technically, this is off topic for this group as it isn't a Mac or iOS specific question. But I'll answer it briefly and, if you need further info, feel free to contact me privately. Dropbox is a file-sharing application which allows you to share files with others and synchronise your Macs, PCs and some mobile devices. Further than that I'd rather not go on list. Re: fleksy is out!
Hi, I've tried the app. In fact, I downloaded it while I was on holiday because the hotel I was staying at on my way home offered free Wi-Fi. I find myself typing very accurately with this. Even without VoiceOver, you can hit the wrong letter with the regular keyboards, so Fleksy is actually helpful here in that you don't have to delete anything in most cases. In my case, my hands are too big to always hit the letters accurately even when I use VoiceOver, so Fleksy is very helpful because it allows me to simply type and forget. I don't have to focus as much on whether I'm touching the write letter, and this helps even when I don't use VoiceOver. Incorporating this into IOS would be a pretty good solution, at least an alternative one. I don't agree that it should be the only text input method particularly when Fleksy receives international keyboard support, but being able to switch to it as you would a keyboard already implemented into iOS would be very efficient as it would apply to any text area. Third party developers can already do this, but developers do not have enough control over the implementation as they can only change the letters and symbols. I find myself forgetting to use Fleksy, though. Because it can not be switched to like the other keyboards, I find myself sliding when I get a text in order to reply and just typing, as opposed to bringing up Fleksy, entering what I want to type, then copying or sending it to a message. In this particular instance, having it incorporated into iOS would be very useful. Unless Apple comes up with something even better which somehow does not require you to turn off VoiceOver, it seems to me that this would be an avenue worth pursuing. The price seems very justifiable. It's a great solution, works very well and while it is specifically designed for blind people, it's even helping me out when I look at the screen and I don't have to look so much at what I'm typing or even at the keyboard itself. I've avoided a lot of tripping while texting with this application, so I'd say it helps avoid injuries even though you could just avoid texting while you walk entirely. Hi Karin and others, I'm a sucker for a weather app, so I gave Fahrenheit a whirl. Are you saying that information such as wind speed/direction, humidity, real feel temp, etc are accessible with voiceOver? If not, I would suggest that a claim of completely accessible is misleading, at least to the faction of VoiceOver users who lack any functional vision. I've been all through the settings, and unless I'm missing something, from my perspective, Fahrenheit provides absolutely zero added value over the Weather widget included with IOS. Best regards. Hi all This THREAD started life on our sister group but since David is specifically asking for Mac utilities it's more appropriate here. If you wish to talk about doing this from Windows please use our sister group, Techno-chat. Hi David Have you looked at Coriolis Systems iPartition? Just use the migration assistant and you'll be fine. Either attach your backup drive to the new machine and migrate from it, or else use a firewire 1394B lead to do the same thing by booting your current machine into Target mode. Apple Keyboard can broken keys be repaired?
Hello listers, Using used equipment offers new challenges. My new used mini arrived. The keyboard came in two additional pieces a T key and a F13 key flooding around. Any chance of fitting these back in place? The case seems a bit rough from the trip but so far it started up ok. the Majic pad seems ok but I have not tried to use it yet. Re: Install Adobe Flash player, how?
Hi Eric, I always find it amusing to peruse Adobe's accessibility page and learn about the company's dedication to supporting all customers. Reading further, however one learns that this dedication only extends to the web page. It does not extend so far as the arduous and impossible task of writing even so much as a marginally accessible installation dialog for their flash app (which once existed BTW), but I digress. On the Windows side of things, Ninite will solve the flash updating problem, but I've not yet been able to locate a MacOS equivalent. Replication, a gentle reminder
Hi all Just a gentle reminder. It has been brought to our attention by a number of members that there have been a number of posts to this list which have been replicated on at least one other list with similar content in recent times. As stated in the list policy document, this is not desirable behaviour as it threatens our unique identity. There's a difference between posting links to something which is a general point of interest, as long as we are not being used as, in the words of one member, a dumping ground for content posted elsewhere primarily. So let me be blunt about this, then we all know where we stand. If you're going to send something to Mac Visionaries or somewhere similar, don't bother sending to Mac Access. We are going to be monitoring certain places over the next little while to see exactly what is replicated on our list and by whom. It's unfortunate that I've had to post this message. But we are losing members quite frequently at the moment and most of them are siting replication of content as their primary reason for leaving the group. Your cooperation would be appreciated. Depends on your situation. if you are just talking on the phone not browsing then probably 6 hours or a bit less. that's my estimate sinceI have a battery pack and can get over 40. Once that comes out ok then 1. run lion disk maker from the apps folder 2. brows to the installesd.dmg on your desktop. 3. follow the prompts. Re: Apple Keyboard can broken keys be repaired?
Hi Eric, I've never taken one of these apart, but once my golden got a little excited and knocked a few keys out of a friend's laptop keyboard. I was surprised to discover that the springs that use to support keys in older keyboards were gone. Instead the keys were held in place and bounce back because of suction from the rubber at the bottom of the keys. Once back in place, they were all restored to functionality and my 85 LB furball got out of the dog house. Hopefully, your Mac Mini keyboard uses the same principle. Good luck. Re: battery pack was Re: iphone 4s over 3g
Hehaha. depends on what ever you have. You can get the cheap ones that plug in to the computer and can charge your iPhone like 3 or 4 times.or you can get the more expensive ones that plug in to the wall like mine does. If you want a good deal on one look at ebay for the energizer coma 8000 or it's now updated companion. Mine is a bit bigger then the vr stream if you remember that unit. It's also been dropped twice and survived, but that might just be luck. There are also cases for this, how ever I don't know anything about those so someone will have to help you who does. Take care and be blessed. Hello Chris, If your EPUB book is DRM protected, then you really have no choice but to use Adobe Digital Editions Preview. Otherwise you can use Stanza. Re: Mic recommendation for multi purposes
As far as I know, all of the intel minimacs have microphone jacks and earphone jacks on them, I have a ppc mini which has no microphone port, and an intel mini which does. Plugging a microphone into this jack always worked just fine, until I broke the interconnect board while upgrading memory in the machine. But, instead of paying 30 bucks for another interconnect board, we opted to purchase a 2 dollar usb phone/mike jack which works perfectly on the mini in question, and allows us to use it just as if it was never broken. :) And, the extra memory works too. *grin* The only thing not working on that mini now is the airport, as the antenna came unplugged, and I can't for the life of me get it plugged in again. But, we solved that problem too, I just made the other mini share it's airport connection via ethernet, then ran a cable from the broken mac to the working one, and poof, both now browse the internet with no issues. :) Don't know if this helps, but figured it'd be worth mentioning. I don't know if any of the minis have built-in internal mikes or not, I never tried recording stuff w/o an external mike when I had my intel mini working properly. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. ePub reading options on the Mac [was Re: ePUB]
Hi Chris, Anne is correct that for DRM protected ePub books that use Adobe's ADE scheme, which is the most common commercially used DRM scheme, you have to use Adobe Digital Editions Preview to read the books. This is the DRM scheme used by Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Sony, and Google, along with many online bookstores that sell ePub books with DRM. In the case of hardware devices from Kobo and Sony, and the Barnes and Noble Nook, all of which I believe lack accessibility for visually impaired readers, these DRM-protected ePub files will also be natively supported on the readers. This format is also used by libraries for downloadable eBooks that can also be downloaded in the free OverDrive Media Console app for iOS. Apple's iBooks uses a different DRM scheme called FairPlay2, and there is currently no program that supports reading those files on a Mac. Adobe Digital Editions Preview is quite comfortable to use for reading if you don't need to use features for closer examination of the text, such as reading by character, or reviewing by line, etc. If you're trying to learn computer coding, where variables can be oddly spelled, and you need to check for special characters, delimiters, and spacing, there's currently no good reader that supports those features and also handles DRM that you can use on your computer. You have to use work arounds like using the VO-Shift-C to copy the page that VoiceOver read to the clipboard, and then paste that section into TextEdit where you can use all the regular VoiceOver navigation and reading options to review the material. I prefer reading library downloads with Adobe Digital Editions Preview on my Mac to reading the same downloads in OverDrive Media Console on my iPhone, though it's neat that I can browse and borrow through the OverDrive app on my iPhone or iPad once I've linked it to my library user account number. OverDrive on iOS is much better for audio book downloads from my library than it is for reading downloaded eBooks. Similarly, I can open ePub books with ADE DRM in the OverDrive app on my iPhone, but the reading experience isn't as good as with the Kobo app or Adobe Digital Editions Preview on my Mac. Basically, I'm only covering these details for completeness. Stanza desktop (to distinguish it from the iOS Stanza app that it was developed to support) works for multiple eReader formats, including ePub, provided these do not have DRM. However, it was originally developed mainly as a tool to unify the diverse set of mobile reading file formats, so that a supported standard, ePub, could be used with the iOS Stanza app. As such, it was primarily a desktop conversion tool that was adapted to also use as a reader and to support various upload options for the Stanza app. However, since Stanza is accessible with VoiceOver, and the other main eReader conversion tool, Calibre, is not (at least, not in its GUI interface -- you can run it with AppleScripts from Terminal), many blind readers are using it also as a reader. (In case you are interested, the iOS app can be used with VoiceOver and even with Braille devices, but is basically no longer supported, since Amazon bought out the competition. At one time Stanza on iOS devices was deemed the biggest challenger to Amazon's Kindle, and was backed by publishers, lead by MacMillan, to be the standard distribution tool for eBooks.) Stanza on the Mac is free and usable, but it has some focus quirks with VoiceOver for its advanced functions, such as bookmark navigation. Just use the navigation controls you would use for HTML content, and you can use all the heading shortcuts, etc. It does let you read by word, character, etc. Other accessible apps for DRM-free ePub reading on the Mac are iText Express or Pro (from the App store -- the Express version is free), and Bookle ($10 in the App Store), which is an app that the editors of the Take Control eBook series recently developed. They're still adding features, so I'd like to see support for more navigation options, but this is coming along, and uses a library organization to keep track of your books, as does Adobe Digital Editions Preview. Here are links to the Mac applications that were mentioned. The original Lexcycle Stanza site got shut down last November, and Mac versions of the program can be hard to find. I give two working links for the Stanza software below. • Adobe Digital Editions 1.8 Preview http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/digitaleditions1-8/ • Stanza desktop version for the Mac -- CNET download page: http://download.cnet.com/Stanza/3000-2056_4-198177.html • Stanza desktop version for the Mac -- Softonic download page: http://stanza.en.softonic.com/mac • iText Express (free) by Lightway at the Mac App store http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/itext-express/id416550249?mt=12 • Bookle ($9.99) by Stairways Software at the Mac App store http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bookle/id496158508?mt=12
Re: playing audiobooks at faster speeds on mac.
You've hit the nub of it actually Travis. One of the reasons I wanted to play the books faster was to record them in other formats using Audio Hijack Pro. This, incidentally, is *not* illegal as it is for personal use. I could record to CD and then rip to the alternative format I'm just trying to bypass the CD phase. I also don't wan to record the book(s) in realtime as this would take forever.. The QuickTime option was the first thing I tried but alas no joy. On 16 Jul 2012, at 20:51, Travis Siegel tsie...@softcon.com wrote: I don't know any way to do this using itunes. However, quicktime supports this quite nicely. Of course, most (all?) commercial audio books cannot be played in quicktime, so I realize that doesn't help much. I do sometimes use audio hijack to make an itunes book into some other format I can load into quicktime, just so I can use the faster playback. It works well, and allows me to finish audio books *much* faster than itunes would otherwise allow. Gordon On 13 Jul 2012, at 18:11, John Panarese jpanar...@mac-access.net wrote: This has been a topic that has come up several times. Some folks are told by Apple techs that the Mini can work without a monitor and some people have no trouble with that setup. However, others, like myself, had oddities occur without a monitor connected, such as VoiceOver not starting at startup automatically, system preference changes not sticking, finder bogging down and some Safari weirdness. There is a setup that one can use to trick the Mini into thinking you have a monitor, but that will cost about $60 as an investment. You would have to weigh that against simply buying a cheap monitor. Re: iphone 4s over 3g
I'm not aware of the specs of the iPhone 5. In fact, I haven't actually heard that it is yet available. We get what we consider to be acceptable battery life out of our 4S models. As far as we're concerned, as long as it is functional and effective, it doesn't have to necessarily be the latest and greatest. Hi Eric On 16 Jul 2012, at 19:58, Eric Caron eric_ca...@mac-access.net wrote: Thanks Gordon, You're more than welcome. I should have added that, if you want to boot a machine into Target mode, just hold down the letter T for as long as it takes for your new machine to see it as a volume. Usually takes about 10 to 20 seconds, but it's very reliable. That way I have done countless upgrades and migrations for clients in similar situations to yours. It's great that people in our neck of the woods are now starting to realise the potential of Mac OS and iOS and if I get the job I'm applying for I am hoping that my days of teaching may well not be over after all. :) I personally don't have a lot of confidence in my teaching skills, I'm far more at home in sorting out technology and Braille transcription. But for whatever reason some others don't seem to agree. I'm not going to go on about this, but anyway I'm glad you're almost up and running. I would just suggest though that, for future similar occurrences if you're going to do migrations of this nature, you might want to get yourself either a Thunderbolt cable or a 1394B (Firewire 800) cable. New machines come thunderbolt-ready and it's infinitely faster than FireWire. So if you can, go that route next time and you'll be amazed just how fast it actually is. We experienced our first Thunderbolt visit a couple of days ago and I came away mighty impressed. Gordon I followed the directions with a lot more confidence after reading your post. I had to take the slow route using Migration Assistant over WiFi, but all seems to be going great. I Guess I'll know for sure tomorrow as this will take about 10 hours! I appreciate this tips very much. I'd be lost without this list. With it I'm doing much much more then I ever did on my Windows machines and rather then fighting with the computer, I'm usually having fun. Re: Mac mini July 2011 screen question
Hi Diane We currently have 8 Mac Minis Server machines of the current design here, the oldest of which is mid 2011. All bar one works without a monitor and there are no problems at all with VoiceOver starting or reading. In fact, we also have a late 2009 Server machine which works just as well. There would have been no logic behind a design philosophy preventing the machine from being used this way because many enterprise organisations mount their servers in such a way that direct video displays are impractical. Thus, it has to be functional without a display so that remote management is possible. Lynne uses ARD to admin our servers very frequently and doesn't encounter any issues. I also have occasion very frequently to use a Bluetooth keyboard on our machines and don't use a monitor. So I don't get it why you should be having problems with VO on Apple's server platform. Or have I misunderstood you? Gordon On 17 Jul 2012, at 03:37, Diane Bomar diane.ale...@att.net wrote: The server has an i7 processor, and additional software. Re: playing audiobooks at faster speeds on mac.
Hi Dónal, You wrote: You've hit the nub of it actually Travis. Your original question was: • This is a very simple question really. Is it possible to replicate the IOS functionality on a Mac which enables the playing of audiobooks at higher speeds? Based on your reply to Travis, I'm going to scratch a large part of the draft reply I composed until I find out more about what you want to do. FIrst, of all are you trying to play Audible or other DRM-encoded files at faster speed? Because if you just need the output to come out on your Mac so that you can use Audio Hijack Pro, you can just send the output from the Audible app or other apps on your iPhone that you play at faster speed to your Mac with AirPlay, assuming that both devices are on the same wireless network. At the present time, you need some sort of helper application to run AirPlay on your Mac, so I'm using an app named AirServer (currently $15) that I bought when it was half price several months ago. I think AirFoil from Rogue Amoeba may also support this. However, AirPlay support for the Mac is one of the features Apple announced for Mountain Lion, so this should be available to you with the new OS release within a few short days. The way this works for me is that at the bottom right corner of the Audible playing screen on my iPhone or iPad, there's an Airplay button that appears when I'm on a Wi-Fi network where there are other AIrPlay compatible devices. Alternatively, if you have an AirPort Express on your network, that device will also be recognized when you double tap the AirPlay button in the bottom right corner of your Audible app's playing screen. When I double tap the AirPlay button, I get the options selected, video route, iPad, button, video route, Esther's MacBook Air, button, and audio route, Study, button, along with a Cancel button. The first option is for my iOS device, so it supports both audio and video playing. (I put a lot of my Audible books on my iPad, since it has more capacity, and better sound quality if I'm listening and don't need to interact with the screen.) The second option is for my AirServer enabled Mac -- one of the reasons I chose that software over AirFoil is that it would mirror everything, both audio and video, at a time when AirFoil only had support for audio streaming. The third option is the location tag for my AirPort Express. With Airplay, only the streamed audio and video get relayed to the speakers on my Mac -- not VoiceOver's announcements as I navigate the buttons on my iOS device. So you could use Audio Hijack Pro to capture the audiobook that is played speeded up from your iPhone and sent to your Mac. If you want to play your tracks speeded up directly on your Mac, and the tracks don't have DRM, then you can use either VLC or QuickTime Player 7, both of which let you access playback controls that speed up the audio. While the version of QuickTime Player that ships with Snow Leopard and Lion doesn't include these controls, you can download QuickTime Player 7, which is the version that shipped with Tiger and Leopard, and use that instead. Furthermore, you can use AppleScripts to control the speed up and switch back and forth between your selection in iTunes and in QuickTime Player so that your position is remembered. There's a whole discussion thread on how to do this on the archives for this list from February: • Speeding up podcasts on the Mac [was Re: Speeding up podcasts on iphone] http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg08057.html Finally, if you want to specifically speed up Audible books, this topic was also discussed on this list about a week and a half before you rejoined it. Take a look at my archived post from early July: • Converting Audible files to MP3 [was Re: Audiobook Builder questions.] http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg10666.html There's a program called Macsome Audiobook Converter that some people have used to make copies of their Audible files. Again, this uses iTunes and your authorized copy of Audible books to make the MP3 copies. I haven't used this myself, but I've heard that some other VoiceOver users have. I'm not sure whether it works on the newest higher quality formats, but I believe it works on all the older file formats according to the MacUpdate reviews. So, depending on what you want to do, it seems there are three options to explore: 1) Send the output from your iOS device to your Mac with AirPlay, then record
