Increasing volume on Podcasts

2012-07-29 Thread David Griffith
I have Changed subject line.
Just for information the Mac version of Mp3Gain is free, and completely
accessible with Voiceover under Lion at least. Someone who has ML could test
it I guess.
I routinely run Mp3Gain on mp3 files that I need to increase the volume of.
In particular I find Calibre audio books often too quiet as well as
Podcasts.
It is better if the original is not too quiet I agree but it is an option.
I also use if I have made a recording and I have not been able to get that
close to the person talking for example.

I can duplicate. no disrespect to David, but please adjust the volume of
your podcasts, or I will have trouble listening to them. Thanks!

Hi Esther

Is it me, my system or have others also noticed that the audio on David's
podcasts is absolutely dreadful? I can hardly hear what he's saying at
times. The intro audio came over at normal volume so I don't think it is
something this end.

Hi Gordon and Others,

Just to correct the name of the author of the Fleksy podcast Dennis
mentioned as David "Woodbridge":
. Fleksy release demo July 2012:
http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com/2012/07/13/fleksy-release-demo-july-2012/
Sarah also did a Fleksy podcast that you can listen to at:
http://tffp.marrie.org/486

As Geoff stated, the updated help for the current version, which has
additional features for using symbols and corrections for some of the
version 1 limitations, support for import/export options, and a few other
fixes, may be found in the app. Probably the most important information is
to keep typing without waiting to hear the letters announced and just assume

that the app will identify the word you typed in one of the selections that
you flick through. Occasionally there will just be certain words that
aren't in it's dictionary, and you will have to slowly type and add these
in. Or certain long, and complicated words will better be entered if you
carefully find the first few letters, then revert to just "guessing" the
positions of the other letters.

I think the current version is not really optimized for the iPad, and you'll

find if you explore the keyboard that the layout of the Fleksy keyboard
occupies a much larger portion of the screen than you're used to using, so
you have to "exaggerate" the placement of the keys in your touch gestures to

use this at present.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Jane,

I did two podcasts on using the Reminders app. they are at
applevis.com. I'll post the links below. i did these podcasts to make using
the app easier for other blind iPhone users. I like the app but it was a
challenge for me to learn at first.

Hope this helps.

Re: for me: cmd accent and cmd shift accent in some apps does not work for cycling through windows

2012-07-29 Thread Sarah Alawami
It's the sound you normally hear if you try and excite a vo command with vo
off. What's supposed to happen is you are supposed to hear cycle through
windows. It works in the finder fine. and I just did a permissions repair but
no joy. Still does network in mail, or yorufukurou, or amadeus. Odd eh? I
wonder what could be causing this.

WEll there is a solution, which guess we all need to remember, if a simple
thanks or whatever, just e-mail the person directly perhaps?

I think it's something many of us do without thinking about it, and yet it does
increase traffic through the list thus filling up the archive on any given

apps like mail not work for cycling between windows. I can't even get it to
work in amadeus pro. I there a work around or a setting I need to unable? it's
not a show stopper. I can use the window chooser but I miss that key stroke.

Hi Sarah,

The Knowledge Base page on using Apple's Recovery Disk Assistant is here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848

The recovery tool doesn't get copied to the flash drive. It will wipe the
contents of your flash drive though, I believe.

Cheers,

Esther

ML Mail question.

2012-07-29 Thread Danny Noonan
This may have been covered but under Lion, I could tab/shift tab between folder
and message tables which made it very easy and quick to go through my various
accounts and rule set folders. Since ML, I either have to do 5 tab/shift tabs
to go from a message list to folder list or uninteract twice and shift tab
twice or vo command shift and then vo command t. Obviously, I can vo command j
to jump from the folder list to interact with the message table and between
message and text but wondered if there was something I'm missing for a quick
way to move between the folder table and the message table. It isn't a big
thing but to save myself a handful of extra key strokes over time really adds
up.

Also, is it just me who is noticing a huge improvement in vo shift home in
putting you at the top of the message list? This used to drive me nuts as half
the time I'd end up at the tool bar.

Anyway, thanks to all for such a wonderful source of invaluable information.

Regards,
Danny:

• Fleksy release demo July 2012:
http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com/2012/07/13/fleksy-release-demo-july-2012/

Hi Gordon

I hope you got my text message about the Podcast that David Bridgewood
did, but I'm sure you'll find it if not.

Thanks to all, their replies were concise and should give you everything
you need. But, having been there myself, perhaps a bit more explanation is
needed, with apologies to others on the list.

I think it's the concept that is strange until you actually use it. After
pressing the Home button three times to turn VoiceOver off, you have to
imagine the blank screen is an invisible keyboard. Place your fingers
where you think the qwerty keys home row should be, and, if you're a touch
typist, go from there using all your fingers. I find it easier in
Landscape mode so lock Fleksy in Landscape via the Fleksy Settings dialog
in the main Settings app. But I know people who use Fleksy with only one
or two fingers, 'guessing' roughly where the qwerty keys would be.

So you've turned VoiceOver off, got Fleksy in either Portrait or Landscape
mode according to your preference. You can check you've got it right using
the fact that a left flick will tell you there's no text to delete. (If
the keyboard's the wrong way round, turn it round till a left flick boings
at you to show no more text to delete).
Decide on whether you're going to actually touch type or use one or two
fingers. Use a word like 'bananas' as it's a good pattern to start with.

With the bottom edge of the IPhone near you, imagine the Home row a little
way up. So the B A N A N A s will be easy for you to imagine. Just press
where you think the B will be (bottom row, nearly at the halfway point on
the left side of the row), then tap the place as on a typewriter keyboard
and immediately lift your finger off the key. You won't get feedback but
should here a slight keyclick. (I do find I have to have volume turned up
when typing in a noisy environment).

Now type the other keys - quicker I find is better. So A over to the left
but a little higher as it would be on the Home row. N back on where the
bottom row would be but a little over to the right. Etc. Etc. It's much
easier if you are actually a touch typist but not difficult once you get
the hang of it if you're not.

Once you've typed all the letters of the word in, flick to the right
instead of pressing a space bar (this does take a bit of getting used to).
This brings up the 'Suggestions' list, and, with any luck your first word
should be 'bananas'. Accept this and you're ready to type the next word.
No need to press anything. After the word is spoken, just carry on typing.
If it gess the word wrong, flick Down until Fleksy says the word you want;
Up if you pass the word.

And you're on your way.

As said, if you need practical help, Gordon, message or email me and we
can set up a Skype call on Sunday.

Re: SuperDuper

2012-07-29 Thread Esther

On Jul 28, 2012, at 6:08 PM, josh gregory wrote:
Hello Diane, Josh, and Others,

I think that I gave a quick summary of what SuperDuper! does in one of my
posts, but it may have gotten buried in the flurry of recent posts. I also
gave a link to a nice blog posting that Lynne wrote about different backup
programs, but I see that the blog site is down right now, so I'll give you the
link to this article on System Backup posted at the main mac-access site:
http://www.mac-access.net/Extras/System_Backup.html

This is going to be a quick explanation, because a much better description is
given in the Take Control guide (Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac). There
are different parts to a good backup strategy, and one of the applications that
comes with your Mac, Time Machine, is pretty good at keeping copies of
documents and mail on your system. But because it is set up to easily track
changes, and mostly works incrementally, it can be easier to use to recover
files when you accidentally deleted something that was recently created -- in
the last month or two. In order to restore your current system you'd have to
apply not just the last major backup, but all the incremental ones. By
contrast, while programs like SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner also do
support incremental backups, their major value is for complete disaster
recovery when you want to get a completely working system up right away. If my
hard drive fails entirely, it's less important to me that I get it working agai
n with the most recent copies of documents than that I can bring up a version
immediately. And so these programs are set up to be able to make an "image"
backup or "clone" of your entire disk. The term "bootable clone" means that
not only is this a snapshot copy of the programs and folders on your system at
a given time, but that you can also attach the drive to your computer, hold
down the power button along with the option key, and select this as an
alternative drive to boot from (by pressing either the right or left arrow key)
and then pressing return to start the boot. If the hard drive of my laptop
dies, or if I manage to completely trash it with a new operating system
installation I can continue to work with almost no loss of time. Additionally,
if the cloned drive uses the same format as my computer (e.g., laptop sized for
laptops), and I can swap it into my computer (not possible with the MacBook Air
models, but doable for the MacBook Pros) and continue with a wo
rking system (although one which might not have the most recent contents on my
hard drive).

Since Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), Apple has included a recovery partition on your
hard drive so that in the event of a corrupted operating system, you can start
up a completely new one. Of course, that doesn't help you if your entire hard
drive fails (including the recovery partition), so the recent discussions about
saving the downloaded version of Mountain Lion or Lion to a separate bootable
device (USB memory stick, DVD, etc.) are essentially about cloning the recovery
partition to some portable external media.

It's not practical to take frequent clone backups, since they can take 2-3
hours to perform (depending on the size of your hard drive and how full it is).
But they're very useful in cases where you want to troubleshoot your computer
(and need to do it by bringing up tools from a separate boot partition), or if
you do a system upgrade and decide that you don't like the new version -- you
can restore your hard drive with the clone that you made of the earlier
operating system and wait for the bugs to be ironed out.

This is only one part of the backup strategy, because all these physical
devices are in the same place. If your house burns down, it would be nice to
know that you can recover your files from a Cloud storage system, which is what
Sarah was talking about with Gordon on the subject of crash plan.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hello Josh

Yes, correct. Super Duper! will run in free mode as long as you like. But it
doesn't let you use the "Smart Updates" or schedule backups. For the price, I
really think registration is worth while. Smart Updates are an incredible time
saver. It allows you to only backup what's changed since your last backup.

Re: SuperDuper

2012-07-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hello Diane

Point taken, and please understand that no offence was intended. Super Duper!
is one of those applications which isn't really explained by the name. There
is a lot of discussion related to Super Duper! in the archives, as there is
Carbon Copy Cloner. I do take the point that there are some switchers out
there not familiar with Mac OS products. Don't be afraid to ask questions, the
very last thing I want to do is discourage questions. My mention of the
archives should perhaps have indued some examples and I will try to do that
henceforth.

Yes, it has been discussed, a lot, but not explained what was its purpose.

Thanks for clarifying that. I am sure that took less time, than my sifting
through archives.

If I needed more information, than what the app does, it would behoove me to
look through archives.
There is a lot of traffic on this list, and I appreciate it, immensely, but
some of us are relatively new to using Mac software, and it shouldn't be
assumed that everyone knows the purpose of an app that is being discussed. Just
a simple mention in the original thread that this app is a backup utility would
suffice.

Thanks,
Diane

Is there not an easier way of getting itunes to stream stations other than
trying to determine what the actual stream link for the site is? I can't seem

use voice over. any help would be appreciated. Have they done anything in

The only thing I would add is that the settings for fleksy is under the main

numbers of the people you text most. Just type a phone number, then a comma
then the next phone number and so on. Then these shortcuts will show up in
fleksy, as you flick to the right after composing your message. Also in
settings you can insert your phone number and email address, then fleksy will
place a link in your texts or emails with a link at the end of either so that
any other fleksy user can read your message then just click on the link and
they will be automatically put into fleksy so that they can respond back to you.
I hope this makes since.

these are the instructions I sent to gordon privately for anyone else who may
be struggling or need help with fleksy.

Hi Gordon this is how you use fleksy.

1. open the app and it will say loading.

2. when it is loaded and says triple tap home to start typing then you just
triple tap the home button witch will turn voice over off.

3. to type what you wish to type just tap with one finger on the screen where
you think each letter of the word you want to type is, you don't have to be
accurate.

4. swipe to the write and it will tell you what word it thinks you typed, if it
is the wrong word just keep swiping down till it finds the write word that you
meant to type. If it does not find the word you meant then just do a swipe to
the left to delete the last word it told you. Then try again on a different
part of the screen maybe a bit to the left or write of where you first typed.

5. to put a full stop in swipe to the write again after you've typed the word
and it will put the full stop in, swipe down if you want a question mark comma
or exclamation mark. There are more advanced simbles you can put in but not
played with it yet.

Fleksy has become really useful to me over the last few weeks.

When you have finished typing what you wish to type then turn voice over back
on and if you swipe to the write a menu will come up with what you can do with
the text. It will then take you in to the section that allows you to do the
action. I do not know weather you use Audio boo but if you do do a search for
ianmcnamara and I have done a boo explaining how to use fleksy.

Hope this helps.

some more mail questions

2012-07-29 Thread Melissa Tucker
Is it possible for me to remove my account and make sure the mail app doesn't
remember any of the settings that I have put in the system in the past? I'm
having trouble connecting to my at&t mail and if I just use the "remove
account" questions and then go back and put my information in again, most of
the settings that I've used before aren't working. I think I have the correct
imap settings now and would like to start this over as if I just got the mac.
Or, is it possible for me to sync my mail from my ipad to my mac and just use
the settings that I know are correct on my ipad? Finally, I was reading some
of the bugs of mountain lion on wednesday when it just came out and I read
there was a small mail bug. Was wondering if this has been fixed yet.

Now, I have another question, but it is on another subject regarding the mac,
so will create a new message for that. thanks for any help.

Re: burning mountain lion to disk

2012-07-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Thomas

I am happy that you now have things sorted. Yes, I am not surprised that your
disk image was the Lion OS. Apple finally made the process of burning a DVD of
their operating system quite late in the test phase of Mountain Lion, which did
take some by surprise. As for the hardware validation, I think it's only going
to get tighter. But I guess the question is how long will it be before some
company challenges Apple's new policies via legal avenues. I am not in any way
trying to suggest that Apple has broken the law. Although that having be said,
I do wonder whether the practices might qualify as restraint of trade, unfair
competition, etc. etc.. One can only wait and see, I guess.

Gordon

Hi Gordon, the install dmg does turn out to be my old Lion one, glad you
pointed that out to me, had forgotten that I had intentionally put the M L one
at another place until I can back it up on thumb drive, in other words not at a
place where I am likely to drop it in trash or something like that. I checked
it and it is the 4.35 gb package, and this other one was my Lion one, which at
this point I guess would have little use for.

As for the hardware validation and control, doesn't surprise me one bit, and I
like you don't have very good feelings about that. Don't mind the validation
to a degree, but to use that as a major control factor to force customers to
buy only their product where they can intentionally inflate prices is wrong.
Going for the mark up might bring you money in the short term, but can kill in
the long term. Didn't Apple get burned with some of that in the late 80s early
90s in the question of whether to allow cloning or not? Apple didn't allow,
and Big Blue did and that is why there are so many of their look a likes around
even though Apple had the better product, the volume just pounded them. But
that discussion is more of a business strategy discussion and not really
germane to the list, so I guess I will take my punishment *lol*.

However, the validation of hardware would explain why my external cd burner
would work for some time then stopped working on my old power pc. As upgrades
would come along I guess it would verify what I was doing. To bad it didn't
verify that my cd drive wasn't working anymore, well ejecting it didn't work
anymore *lol*. If I'm lucky it might read from it but forget burning on either
one of them. Seems more if it says "unsupported" chances are it means "this
aint going to happen for you." Well just bought me a junk Windows laptop and
used it for burning instead until I got the new machine here. Took some time
and some good breaks to save up for it but got it done. Hopefully it will last
10 years like the old power pc will have done when December comes along this
year. And yes it does work fine except for the cd drive's tray, and of course
the fact that it can no longer upgrade past Tiger.

Hi Esther

Is it me, my system or have others also noticed that the audio on David's

The intro audio came over at normal volume so I don't think it is something
this end.

Hi Gordon and Others,

Sarah also did a Fleksy podcast that you can listen to at:
http://tffp.marrie.org/486

As Geoff stated, the updated help for the current version, which has additional
features for using symbols and corrections for some of the version 1
limitations, support for import/export options, and a few other fixes, may be
found in the app. Probably the most important information is to keep typing
without waiting to hear the letters announced and just assume that the app will
identify the word you typed in one of the selections that you flick through.
Occasionally there will just be certain words that aren't in it's dictionary,
and you will have to slowly type and add these in. Or certain long, and
complicated words will better be entered if you carefully find the first few
letters, then revert to just "guessing" the positions of the other letters.

I think the current version is not really optimized for the iPad, and you'll
find if you explore the keyboard that the layout of the Fleksy keyboard
occupies a much larger portion of the screen than you're used to using, so you
have to "exaggerate" the placement of the keys in your touch gestures to use
this at present.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Fleksy [Revisited]

2012-07-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Chris

I fully realise that all this stuff must make me seem incredibly dense. My
only defence is, and no - I'm not making excuses or using this as an excuse,
but I'm on a pretty powerful combination of drugs to treat a medical condition.
One of the side-effects of one of the drugs is short term memory loss. Fleksy
isn't the only one I've struggled to remember how to us. Nor is it the only
stupid error I've made of late, much to my own frustration. Anyway, thanks for
the info. I'm perfectly happy to continue the discussion on or off list,
according to others' preference. I merely didn't want to bore others with
something they already know, something they've already seen. Which reminds me,
I must go and check the list archive on the subject of Fleksy.

When you launch Fleksy you are instructed to triple click home to turn VO off.
Do this, and explore the options by flicking to the right. You will find an

either listen to David Woodbrdge's demo podcast on www.applevis.com or within
the podcast section of iBlink radio on your iOS device.

Hello Nicolai,
Many thanks for the tip that option+Space bar overrides the dimmed installed

Gordon,

Lightening web browser is not an Apple product, nor is new rack for that matter
which were all updated via Software Update as Software Upate includes items
from the App Store and they do not have to be specific Apple apps.

Re: burning mountain lion to disk

2012-07-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Sean

Apple is trying to squeeze the other hardware vendors out it would seem.
Although sometimes the validation doesn't seem to work as expected, on many
occasions it can fail, giving something like an error 1014 or 1004 with a very
misleading message.

I think that, had we mot been quite so financially committed, we would probably
have tried to go down the Linux road for our servers. But that isn't an option
now. Apple is doing some very strange things nowadays. Of course, I'm not
privy to all of the stuff that goes on inside of Apple. These are just things
I'm being told by certain people within the organisation.

Re: Mountain Lion App store question

2012-07-29 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello Paul,

Try going to the purchases tab, then interact with the cell that says
Installed. You should hear that the installed button is dimmed. Now, try
hitting Option-Space. This overwrites the behaviour of OS X and forces the app
to reinstall if it is not already. This also works on applications you have
already installed and register correctly. When you have hit Option-Space, you
can stop interacting with the cell and VO-left then right. It should then say
that the button is now "Pause."

I think that this site did show the apps that were signed by apple with the new
certificate system they use now. I can't recall it at the moment but there ya
go. i do hope this gets fixed in an update or a server side fix anyways.

Re: burning mountain lion to disk Is No Longer An Option!

2012-07-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hello Sarah

The DVD image is in exactly the same place. The 4.35GB size sounds right,
which would obviously make it too large for a DVD which has a capacity of
4.2GB. That is an intentional move on Apple's part. They are moving away from
the physical media with the exception of thumb drives. Thus, your "Lion Disk
Maker" bites the dust. That application was obviously written by somebody with
too much time and not a lot to do with it. :)

Anyway, the fact is that it is no longer possible to burn the operating system
to DVD as of Mountain Lion. You are now only going to get the OS on a thumb
drive, or by using the recovery partition on your start disk.

Maybe I'm getting confused. Look at the webkit disk image and it's 40 mb. Mount
it and the app is 120. maybe that type of dmg is called something else. but
since I cannot burn a dvd even though the size shows 4.35 gb and I have a 4.7
gig dvd it should still barely fit. Should it not? maybe like I said I'm
confused. idid this only last year. lol!

Re: Mountain Lion App store question

2012-07-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Sarah

Whilst it's true that the behaviour of the App Store is as I described
yesterday, it's also true to say that the App Store is still very flaky. I was
one of the many who voiced the opinion to Apple via its many forums pre-release
that Mountain Lion wasn't ready for public release. I stand by that opinion.
The operating system itself isn't as stable as it should be. The app store is
extremely flaky. But Apple is one of those organisations who, sadly, sets
deadlines to things and won't adjust that deadline no matter what. However, it
is important to understand the behaviour. Some applications are not compatible
with Mountain Lion not because they aren't compatible, if that makes sense.
They are not compatible as far as the App Store is concerned because the
applications haven't been signed. This is true of many applications which
would otherwise have been perfectly compatible. That may not sound logical,
but it's one possibility as to why your application install butt
 ons are dimmed.

And Sarah, I remember a conversation which we had privately a couple of weeks
ago on this subject. You then said that you weren't going to upgrade to
Mountain Lion until these problems were fixed. Clearly you've changed your
mind, as you are, of course, perfectly entitled to do. :-)

Anyway, I am still in communications with Apple and, if I get any info back
from them I will let the group know.

Hello Chris

OK, let me clarify. As I did actually post last night, it includes all
operating system and all other Apple applications. The apps you mention below
are all Apple developed, or Apple licensed products. You know full well,
Chris, that Pages, iPhoto, iMovie etc. are not third party products.

Also in your HD in Library you can find cashes and a list of all the Apps
cashes but I do not know if you can remove them from there!
So from finder open Command+shift+h and look for Cashes in the list!

Hi Josh,

You're going to have to use the Nightly Firefox builds from here:

Keep in mind that while it does work, a lot of things do not work as expected
and it is very sluggish. It is very much a work in progress.

Now, as far as I know, a user agent tricks a sight into thinking a
browser is something else than what it actually is, much like an
emulator is for video games. So, a question: With firefox as user
agent, could captcha solving be even remotely possible?

Re: a remote, but slight possibility

2012-07-29 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Josh,

Unfortunately, that won't work. I think I see where you are coming from with
this, since the site won't let you download the plugin unless you are running
firefox. Yes, this feature would enable you to download it, but safari wouldn't
have a clue what to do with it. It wouldn't be able to install and run the
plugin. I have read that work is progressing towards making firefox accessible
on the mac. Maybe someday we will be able to use this to run the Webvisum
extension and use it's captcha solving service.
