Re: Considering Mac, questions about Voiceover/access

2012-08-17 Thread Gordon Keen
Hi

If you are on a budget don't forget that apple do a good deal on refurbished
machines that are covered by a full one year guarantee - check out their web
site for details.

I can honestly say that switching to mac was the most liberating move I have
made, I'm sure you will never regret the move should you go ahead.

 Hi all,

Wow, thanks for all the responses, I'll be reading through the links Phil

I've got a lot to think about then. I googled VM fusion and discover
it's a way of running Windows on a Mac right? So I would need a copy
of Windows and whatever else I wanted to run in Windows. I wonder
where in the UK I could buy a full copy of Windows. I don't know much
about this as I have always bought systems with Windows already
installed and as far as I know the CDs that came with them were not
full Windows CDs, just recovery CDs. Does anyone know anything about
where I might buy Windows CD?

There are several things that appeal to me about Mac, having heard a
few podcasts and a friend demonstrating his to me recently. But one
reason I was thinking of keeping my costs down. Because I have a
dying laptop running Windows Vista and JAWS 10. The kinds of Windows
laptops I'm looking at cost around £600. Plus to upgrade JAWS would
cost £400 something. So I was thinking if I went for Mac with
built-in screen reader that would be slightly cheaper. But if I
decided for some reason I would need Windows sometimes this would
increase the cost significantly, and I think I would need to use
tables a fair bit. So I guess I'll keep this laptop going as long as
possible and maybe I can get the money together to get a Mac plus
Windows and VM fusion and JAWS latest version...and in the meantime
start at least reading about how to use Mac and Voiceover.

Re: My first mac

2012-08-17 Thread Phil Halton
Hi Chris, regarding the free Mountain Lion upgrade, I found it easier and
much less hassle to just pony up the $20 and buy and install it directly
from the app store.

It seems you have to qualify for the free upgrade which involves sending
in prooff of purchase, waiting a few days for a code, typing the code into a
PDF document they send you, then sending in the updated PDF, at which point
they send you another code. At least, that's how it was explained to me by
apple customer support - they didn't make it seem very easy.

Fortunately, it's only $20 and paying for it lets you have it on your
machine within a few hours at most with no hassle or hoops to jump through.

As the old saying goes, nothing in this world is really free. This was my
first disillusionment with Apple. Hopefully, not too many more.

Good morning all.
Ladies and gentleman, this is to let you know I have ordered my first mac,
the Macbook Pro 13 inch without Retina Display, from www.ebuyer.com! It
will come with OS X Lion, but apparently can be freely upgraded to
Mountain Lion.
Hope you like the choice I have made. Will no doubt have many questions
and hours of fun and frustration grins. But judging by what I heard last
night on Skype I was completely sold. Should be here within the next 5
working days from today.

Good or what!

Is the above correct and if so how do you enable this feature? In particular
how do you know wether ML has updated any software overnight? I would hope
that there would be some messages to this effect in the notifications center

I think I have set up my software update preferences in system preferences to

have.

How to set a due date for Mountain Lion Reminders | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews

2012-08-17 Thread Sarah Alawami
good tip, but redundant. and ICloud is not the most friendly place to visit w
voice over.

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57495293-263/how-to-set-a-due-date-for-mountain-lion-reminders/?part=rsssubj=newstag=title

How to set a due date for Mountain Lion Reminders

While somewhat replaced by Notification Center options, you can still set a due
date for reminders in Mountain Lion.

More
Apple's new Reminders application in Mountain Lion can be used to make a quick
to-do list for various projects. One feature in previous implementations of
reminders in iCal was a due date option where you could set when a specific
task was to be completed. While this option is a bit redundant with the new
notification options in the Reminders application, it can be implemented for
tasks if needed.

When you create a reminder in the Reminders application, you can double-click
it, select it and press Command-I, or click the i character to the right of
the reminder text to reveal an information window that displays options for
setting a notification. By default you can have the system notify you about the
task on a specific day or at a specific network location, and be set to repeat
if the task is recurring; however, there is no option to set a due date for the
reminder.

Similar to the old due date feature, if the remind me option is set then the
program will color the task pink to indicate its due date has arrived; however,
this behavior now comes with the notification that will appear in Notification
Center. To prevent this notification but still have a due date, you can still
set the contemporary due date feature; however, there is no way to add a due
date from within the Reminders program, so for now this has to be done in
iCloud and not in the program.

Setting the due date at iCloud.com will reveal this as an editable option for
the reminder within Reminders.

(Credit: Screenshot by Topher Kessler/CNET)
Log into iCloud.com
Select the Calendar option
Double-click the reminder of interest in the Reminders list to the right
Check the due date box and set a due date for the reminder
Click OK to save and close the reminder
When this is done, if you then go to the Reminders program and get information
on the modified reminder, you will see a new due option under the remind me
settings that contains the date previously set. This date can now be modified
within the Reminders application.

Ultimately while it may have its uses for some people, the due date option is a
bit redundant with the remind me feature. Both will change the reminder's
color to indicate past-due, with the one exception that the due date will not
trigger Notification Center whereas the remind me option will. If you prefer
to have the system issue a warning when the due date for your task has arrived,
then using the default remind me feature may be preferred to enabling the old
due date option.

Thanks for the tip! But I respectfully submit that going to the website is not
setting a due date in Mountain Lion.

Considering that the feature is not available in iOS, and has actually be
REMOVED from OS X, I wonder how long this will be available on the website. I
love Apple products for the most part, but I really hate when they decide
what's best for my workflow, especially when features are removed. It's a
little insulting.

Re: power nap was: Re: Software update on Mountain Lion

2012-08-17 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Does all this mean that only the latest Macs can automatically download and
install software updates while in sleep mode? Does it mean that my 4 year old
iMac cannot do automatic download and install of software updates while in
sleep mode? If so that is a pity as it would be a nice feature. Are there any
Apps on the Mac App store which would support automatic software update
download and install on a 4 year old iMac?
Many thanks.

Hi Paul,
the answer to your question is unfortunately no, only the latest macs support
this feature. It has to do with hardware as well as software, so no apps would
be able to I'm afraid. I, too, would like this feature I believe. Ah well.
Yours,

iMac cannot do automatic download and install of software updates while in
sleep mode? If so that is a pity as it would be a nice feature. Are there any
Apps on the Mac App store which would support automatic software update
download and install on a 4 year old iMac?
 Many thanks.

support this feature. It has to do with hardware as well as software, so no
apps would be able to I'm afraid. I, too, would like this feature I believe.
 Ah well.

Re: power nap was: Re: Software update on Mountain Lion

2012-08-17 Thread Esther
Hi Paul, Josh, Will, Sarah, and Other,

Power nap also requires a firmware upgrade to work for the supported models.
This is a hardware limitation, because you can't run power nap without
excessive heat generation except on the newest processors, which are built with
on-board flash memory modules that connect directly to the logic board. This
means that even if you replace your hard drives with solid state drives, you
don't achieve the power consumption savings you need to safely run this. And
the newer Intel processors also use less power.

For more details, read the recent Macworld article by Dan Frakes, Up close
with Mountain Lion: Power Nap, and navigate to the header Why isn't my Mac
supported?
http://www.macworld.com/article/1167970/up_close_with_mountain_lion_power_nap.html

By the way, members who are new to the Mac should use the Safari Reader feature
(Toggled on and off with Command-Shift-R) to read this page. This provides an
uncluttered version of the article content that saves you having to navigate
through extraneous links, ads, and graphics that appear on the same web page as
an article.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
