Re: Help selecting text on websites

2013-05-03 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi Chris,

Ok, when on a web page and with Quick Nav on I pressed h to get to a
heading, then VO plus Return. But I just get a beep which indicates
I'm trying to do something which can't be done. I tried then moving
somewhere after the heading and pressing VO Return again, then copying
and pasting anyway just to check, and nothing was selected. I tried
with Quick Nav switched off as well and had the same results. Have
you any ideas what's going on here? It's very frustrating and I can't
help thinking I just must be doing something wrong but I don't for the
life of me know what. I went into keyboard help to make sure I am
pressing the correct keys and it says wen I press Option Control
Return "select item" so I am pressing the right things…any ideas?

Thanks,
Catherine

If you don't mind me asking, what web site are you trying to do this with? I

RE: Help selecting text on websites

2013-05-03 Thread David Griffith
I have precisely the same problem with headings .
This and other unpredictability's , including constraints on copying
amounts of text to one paragraph, is why I never ever recommend the VO Enter
method of copying from web pages. It is excessively clunky also in terms of
keystrokes.

The other selection and copying methods are in my experience far more
predictable and reliable. Especially line selection via quick nav and the
rota and or shift VO C.

Because I cannot replicate your general difficulties with either the
announcement of selected text or using shift VO C it is difficult to know
what to suggest.

I am not sure if there is a setting in Voiceover Utility to return settings
to default, if so this might be worth trying.
Also perhaps somebody could offer you a set of portable Voiceover settings
to apply which may correct your difficulties. I am not sure how to do this
but would be happy to do this if it helped.
I may not be the best though as I am using an iMac with extended keyboard
and using numpad commander. My settings may not suit somebody using a
MacBook. I also have keys set up in keyboard shortcuts to run programs like
Eyepal which you almost certainly do not have.
Assuming you can eventually get Voiceover to behave properly you should find
Shift VO C the easiest method as you do not have to select or even use the
copy command, it is all done with the one keystroke. I use it to get around
the copying of heading text problem on web pages frequently for example.

Hope that you resolve this.

Yeah there is a way to reset everything. When in VoiceOver utility, go into
the file menu and there's a reset option. From there you can reset the custom
settings to default settings, reset all settings and other such things. Hth.

I've now assigned a key on the numpad to the copy last phrase to

What I want to select is a heading, then a few links, and then a

Actually before the kindle was not accessible at all. the hardware thing had
voice reading turned off by choice of the writer's and publishers guild. Also,
there ios app before was not accessible at all. All you saw was the title of
the book. I have a podcast of a podcast that was done 2 years ago when kindle
was first out. or maybe it was a year and half and the person could not even
remotely use the app. as there was nothing to use. and more and more colleges
are switching to kindle for their text books so students can take notes in the
margins and keep the books and stuff. So in a way amazon has no choice but to
make their hardware and software accessible if students are to succeed in the
class room. especially since some times a digital copy is all you have. Now
let's hope if the kindle has a mac version it can and will one day become
accessible.

Take care all.

RE: Turning pages kindle app

2013-05-03 Thread Paula Hobley
Hi Sarah

Do you know, is it possible for people using VO to take notes in the
margins? This would be a really handy feature for me.

Catch you soon

Actually before the kindle was not accessible at all. the hardware thing had
voice reading turned off by choice of the writer's and publishers guild.
Also, there ios app before was not accessible at all. All you saw was the
title of the book. I have a podcast of a podcast that was done 2 years ago
when kindle was first out. or maybe it was a year and half and the person
could not even remotely use the app. as there was nothing to use. and more
and more colleges are switching to kindle for their text books so students
can take notes in the margins and keep the books and stuff. So in a way
amazon has no choice but to make their hardware and software accessible if
students are to succeed in the class room. especially since some times a
digital copy is all you have. Now let's hope if the kindle has a mac version
it can and will one day become accessible.

Take care all.

Hi,
Yes, you can. I have just tested the feature, and it works very well indeed.
You can write notes, and later go to them easily. The one thing it doesn't seem
to do is to announce notes as you read continuously, which could probably get a
little jarring.
HOpe this helps,

Thanks Zack, this is awesome. I may just start reading all of my books this
way and taking notes.

Thanks so much for the info.

folder to another sounds simple.
when the move was taking place for some stupid reason i hit the stop button and
now the files are missing no where to be found.
has anyone had this happen to them? has the mac put the missing files
somewhere? i checked trash and they are not in there.

2013-05-03 Thread Esther
Hi Michael,

I've never done file moves and stopped the process midway like that. I think
that if you had tried to do an "undo" with Command+z immediately after, you
might have been able to get the files back to where they started (depending on
how you performed the move; and this doesn't work once the files in question
are no longer highlighted under the last action). My guess is that they're on
your system, but that you stopped the reindexing of the new path to the files
in the middle. If this were on my Mac I'd use the Terminal in command line
mode to query the directories in question, and get a listing of the file
contents, including "hidden files", in order of modification time, assuming
that you haven't been changing lots of files in those directories since then,
but you'll need to hear from someone with more experience with this process.
Maybe Travis, or someone else with system experience can weigh in. In the
meantime, sit tight, and don't worry too much about this.

Cheers,

Esther
