Thanks Sarah - I'll try the vo f as an alternative search method. I'm still
struggling with the Internet on the Mac. I'm focussing mostly on the BBC
here in the UK, as that is where I do a lot of my catching up on radio I
missed during the week.

For example, on:

www.bbc.co.uk/4extra

I couldn't find the schedule link very easily, but I was using command f to
search for it. I also used the web rowter to try and find it in links or
headings, but it wasn't there, even though I know such a link exists as I've
used it for years on a Winndows machine.

After some good initial early progress, progress has slowed down a bit in my
Mac learning -

Re: chess on the mac

2013-07-11 Thread Esther
Hi John,

The default chess program on the Mac can't really be set for more complex
levels. As far as accessibility goes, you can even set it up to work with
"Speakable Items" if you calibrate the microphone on your Mac (though I haven't
done this in some time), but you can't change the level of play. I'm not aware
of anyone on this list who uses strong chess playing programs on the Mac.
Brandt Steenkamp, a South African iPhone user who got a Mac about 4-5 months
ago, is probably the only person I can quickly identify who is interested in
playing at a comparable level of chess on the Mac, as opposed to just using the
iOS versions of chess apps like Shredder, etc.

You might be interested that there's a good, accessible iOS chess clock app:
the Merkmatics Chess Clock ($0.99 in the U.S. App Store). Here's the URL for
the developer's web site, where you can read a complete description of its
features:
http://www.merkmatics.com

A description of the app is also posted up at AppleVis:
http://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/utilities/merkmatics-chess-clock

Here's the App Store URL:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/merkmatics-chess-clock/id347870076?mt=8
I bet that if there are any features you want added, you could get them put in
by sending an email to the developer, Mat Merkow, at:
supp...@merkmatics.com

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Yes, I knew that Apple were putting in place a system which would use
Facetime over a Cell network in IOS7 but - as far as I knew - it had
nothing whatever to do with the HD Voice protocol that I ran a test
 with today.

The HD Voice protocol is not an Apple exclusive feature, Samsung S
Phones use it along with Nokia, other Google phones etc and the
technology was actually launched in Australia over 12 months ago
apparently - according to the stuff I've been checking out today.

Making a HD Voice call is don in exactly the same way as you'd make an
ordinary phone call, you dial the number from the key pad, you take it
from your contacts, you tell Siri to "Call Dane Trethowan" etc.

Re: A couple of internet questions

2013-07-11 Thread Esther
Hi Andy,

Why not use VO-U and set your rotor to "Links", then type in the first few
letters of schedule ("s c h")? That worked for me. I press return to go to the
link, then either VO-Space or press the up and down arrow keys to activate my
selection. Or, you can use item chooser menu (VO-I), type in "s c h", and do
the same thing to navigate to the "Schedule" link on that page and select it.
Remember, when you use the links chooser in the rotor or item chooser menu, and
either press return or VO-Space on your selection, you only get taken to the
position of that control. You still have to activate it. And with item chooser
menu you can parse out links by pausing between typing your search terms. For
example, you could quickly type "s c h" and then type "l i n" to find links
that match "s c h", but you don't need to do this in this case.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

RE: Anyone a DeafBlind Mac user?

2013-07-11 Thread David Griffith
I certainly would not underestimate the learning curve. I have had my iMac
for well over a year and whilst I am still learning I am not yet as
proficient as I am on a windows machine. For example I still find iTunes a
confusing nightmare to handle and as soon as I start to get to grips with it
changes again. VLC is much easier though.
I think out of the uses you mention mail is the most straightforward . Some
aspects of Mail are more intuitive and straightforward, especially with
attaching files but you will need, even with Mail, to get your head around
the concepts of interaction and uninteraction if you are to get anywhere
with managing or reading the headers in an email message.
There is, in my view, a definite learning curve with browsing the web on
Safari and you should not just expect easy replication of existing windows
skills. Bookmark management is done completely differently as is managing
the download of files. Selecting and copying text, whilst possible is less
straightforward than on a Windows machine. As against that if you can find
reader pages Safari can provide a far smoother reading experience and once
learnt is far easier than ploughing through unnecessary garbage on a page.

The OS is, in my view,, superior to Windows but again represents a learning
curve as things are done differently. Here again interaction is a necessary
skill though increasingly the use of the tab key to automatically interact
and interact will help make things less confusing.

In short I would discourage any impression that there is a quick process
where e a person can pick up all the necessary Mac skills in a couple of
days.
There is also, as discussed on this list earlier this year a dearth of
information aimed specifically at the Visually Impaired user. There are lots
of introductions to Voiceover and the David Woodbridge podcasts are probably
the best of the podcast resources but there is not the depth of material for
example for Office based applications like Pages, Keynote, Numbers or
Tables.

Hi

thanks for getting back to me.

I need a very rough idea of how long it will take to learn to use the Mac
for general OS stuff, Mail, Safari and basic Pages.

I have two people to quote for, so a very general idea is all I need.

Thanks.

2013-07-11 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Evening all,

Well I think lots and lots of very unexpected sun here in Ireland has gone to
my head but I've done something dumb.

I was going to install 10.9 on my macbook pro so I created a second partition.
Then I decided not to so I erased that partition again. I now want to increase
the size of my primary partition to fill the entire size of the disk. Can it
be done easily? I have 100GB just sitting there and I'd like to get it back.

Of course I should add that I can do this using an external drive but I'd
rather not if I don't have to.

Thank much,

Dónal.

Re: A couple of internet questions

2013-07-11 Thread ANDY COLLINS

2013-07-11 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

If I use command f for find, when on a webpage, I never seem to get any
results, even though I know what I am looking for is there. I enter text, and
nothing happens, not by pressing vo space, or hitting enter. Anybody give me
some pointers to making the find/search option work? Also, when logging out of
some websites, especially banking ones, I'd like some spoken confirmation that
I had logged out successfully, can I do anything to get this info spoken to me
the way JAWS use to?

Thanks -

Andy

Re: Anyone a DeafBlind Mac user?

2013-07-11 Thread Jonathan Tyrer
Hi

thanks for getting back to me.

I need a very rough idea of how long it will take to learn to use the
Mac for general OS stuff, Mail, Safari and basic Pages.

I have two people to quote for, so a very general idea is all I need.

Thanks.

So How Many Airplay Devices Do You Want?

2013-07-11 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Just taken a look on eBay, I searched for "Airplay" and was amazed at just how
many different Airplay capable docks, systems and portable units are out there.

I found 264 different items which ranged from small nice sounding portables to
surround-sound systems to digital radios which contained the Airplay
functionality.

I'm looking to purchase a new "Airplay" compatible system and as it stands I'm
favoring the Bose Sound Link Airplay system, I have a Bose Wave II radio in the
house so I guess I have something to go on with regard to what the Soundlink
Air will sound like - if people haven't heard Bose then I would suggest that
perhaps they take some time to hear some Bose equipment for themselves, the
smaller Wave systems etc sound incredible but I'm rambling -.

2 nice things struck me about the Bose Soundlin Air, price is very competitive
and the unit can be run on either AC or optional rechargeable batteries, the
Bose is the first Airplay compatible unit I've heard of which offers portable
battery operation.

I'll keep the list informed of my final purchase of Airplay equipment but
before I do close this message I would like to heap praise on the former
Airplay system I had which was a JBL Onbeat Air. This unit isn't avaialble any
longer it seems, the system had heaps to offer such as an adjustable iPod dock,
easy to setup Airplay function, good sound and small size which meant it could
be fitted just about anywhere, if you're looking for something which is easy to
use and small - and if you can purchase a JBL Onbeat Air - then grab it!

The Distance Between 2 Points

2013-07-11 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I'm off to see Mum in Merimbula this weekend and I've found Navigon to be a
most handy tool when taking previous trips there but I do have 1 question which
I've been wondering about for quite some time.

Is there any way you can have Navigon speak the distance in miles or kilometers
between 2 points - say my home and my Mum's home -.

If Navigon can't do this then are there any solutions which will?

Re: is there any bible apps for iphone that work with voice over was Re: Accessible Bible program for the Mac.

2013-07-11 Thread Devin Prater
The bible app, just called "bible" in the app store, should work. The only
annoyance I have with it is it doesn't show the commentaries and footnotes and
such to voiceover. The element is called just "#", and activating it does
nothing.

chess on the mac

2013-07-11 Thread John Gallagher

Hi all,
Wonder if anyone uses a strong chess playing program on the mac.
the normal chess programs on the windows computers are just about
accessible in the way you can get the programs to speak ot the moves.

I use fritz hiarcs and shredder.
there is a brilliant program called hiarcs chess explorer but it has
no access on a mac or windows pc.
last year in india where we played in the olympiad I used my netbook
to look at the chess databases for our study.
I really love my mac learning about safari I have better acces with
my bank site. with window eyes I struggle to loggin but on a mac I managed it.
I get a bit mixed up when I should interact with some thing but I
really feel I am winning.

thanks for any replies.
