Re: Saving TextEdit files

2013-09-10 Thread Andy Collins
Paul - when you hear that default filename of 'Untitled' just start writing
your filename over it, and VO will say "text replaced" and your filename will
have been created, then either tab or VO right arrow to get to where to save
the file, you will probably come across a pop up button with a location already
selected, so if it's not the place you want to save it, VO space on the pop up
button, and then choose the location for yourself -

authentication has no windows

2013-09-10 Thread Cait and Maggie
Hi,
Mark, my husband, is having problems with his mac. He keeps getting the
message "authentication has no windows". when this happens, the entire system
gets locked up and you can't do anything except restart by holding in the
button.

How do we fix this? The computer is unusable right now because of this.

Earlier today, he reinstalled mountain lion on one partition of his HD because
of problems he was having with the calendar app. This is also the partition we
are having trouble with now.

Thanks,
Cait

Hi Anne again -

When I'm say for example, working in text edit and an email comes in, VO is
interrupted from the app I'm in, to read a portion of the newly arrived email,
is that what happens if the preview pain is active, or would that behaviour
happen anyway? Still not sure I've got it turned off -

Re: Finding an unread email message

2013-09-10 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Andy,

There is no option to turn off the preview pane. You have to navigate to the
horizontal splitter under the message headers in classic view, or to the
vertical splitter between the message headers and the message body in the
modern view, then bring the mouse (VO-Cmd-F5) and double click with mouse or
trackpad.

If you press VO-j on a message, does it read it? If so, you still have the
preview pane showing. If you're in classic view, does pressing VO-Down arrow
take you to the body of the message? If so, you still have the preview pane
showing.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Finding an unread email message

2013-09-10 Thread Andy Collins
Replying to my own messages now,as I figure out more stuff.

I think I was focusing on the wrong horizontal splitter, as there are two
showing up for me. Using VO right arrow, things look this way:

tool bar; mail boxes; vertical splitter; messages table; horizontal splitter;
mail activity; new mail box button; hide mail activity button, and mail boxes
action, and then a second horizontal splitter. I had been focusing on the first
horizontal splitter for the mouse click, and perhaps that's why nothing
appeared to change, but when I clicked on the second horizontal splitter, it
looks so far, that I am now seeing unread in the status column, and that stays
visible until I read the message. This is what I wanted, so hopefully now, it's
sorted. Thanks to all that helped and offered suggestions -

 Hello Andy,

Have you got the preview pane showing? If so, that would explain the

Re: Finding an unread email message

2013-09-10 Thread Andy Collins
Hi Anne - Struggling a bit with this one.

If I VO arrow down say when on the from tab, VO just reads out peoples names,
the way it reads subject titles in the subject tab, it doesn't open and start
reading the message, but doing VO j does open and read the message, as if I'd
hit return. Ive tried clicking on the horizontal splitter by doing VO cmd f5,
and a double click by pressing VO shift and pressing space bar twice, but when
I go back to interacting with my messages table, there appears to be no change -

Saving TextEdit files

2013-09-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running the latest Mac OS with VoiceOver.

I am having trouble saving TextEdit files created by the Apple Mail service
"Save selection in new TextEdit file" or something like this.

I can see the Apple Mail item in a TextEdit window but I cannot work out how to
name the file and save it in a desired location. TextEdit gives the file a name
like "Untitled 3.rtf" and when I press Command+S to save the file I do not see
any way to enter the desired file name or the desired save location. Instead I
just hear a message "TextEdit has no Windows".

I really want to do a "Save As" function but cannot work out how to do that.
Instead I am reduced to copying an existing RTF file to the desired folder,
then renaming that file to the desired name, then emptying the file of all
content, then using copy and paste to save the desired content from Apple Mail
into that file, and finally saving that file. It must be easier than this!

Many thanks for any tips

Paul Hopewell

Re: Audio book binder

2013-09-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi George,
I use audio book binder all the time. I use the split files and renumber
options to divide the book into chapters each corresponding to a single MP3
file. that makes it easier to find your place if you ever get lost. If the book
is very long you need to split it into parts merging say the first 50 MP3 files
into part 1 and the rest into part 2. I can give you full details of how I use
it if you want. It works very nicely for me and is free!

It converts the whole mp3 book to m4b unless it is over 24 hours long. then we
have issues. I tonly does I think 15 of those 24 or more hour long books. I've
left a review on this and I think I contacted the author years ago when I
started using this app but no joy.

Re: how do I do the following in calander in ml

2013-09-10 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Thing is I also use calendar and I also don't' have that issue. it works just
like it did with lion, and that's after 2 clean installs and starting over. I
would also turn off hints for the whole machine eventually, but try setting up
that activity for calendar and see if that works. I do have hints off for the
whole machine btw. I don't need them anymore.

I suggest then that you use the activity feature of Voiceover to make
specific settings for Calendar.
You will find the option to set up activities again in Voiceover utility.
You should be able to specify a verbosity level which is unique to Calendar.

Turning hints off in the v o settings will set all hints off, in what ever
app I am using.
I only want Calendar to change.
By the way, it did not work.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Thanks Anne - Part of the problem is, that the way things are just now, when I

Re: Finding an unread email message

2013-09-10 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello Andy,

Have you thought of setting up a smart mailbox? I have set a smart mail box and
I keep my focus in the unread smart mailbox. I then have set up mail rules to
automatically put posts into specific folders. So if I have a new message from
my bank or from this list while they have the unread flag set they can be
accessed from the unread smart mailbox.

Audio book binder

2013-09-10 Thread George Cham
Hi all,
Has anyone heard of a free app called audio book binder?
I found it in the Mac app store, after hearing a podcast on it on applevis.
>From what I've discovered, it does not convert the whole book into nb4 format.
Has anyone used it?
