Hi all,

I have been getting this annoying issue that I don’t know how to solve. When
reading by paragraph using Voiceover, I hear “quotation mark” or “double quote”

copied using vo+shift+c:

Once, upon a shoreline dreary, there was a tree. This is her story.

However, when I read it (with punctuation level set to most)m I hear this
instead:

Once, upon a shoreline dreary, there was a tree. This is her story. Quotation

Re: Possible audio problem--internal speakers since upgrading to Mavericks

2013-11-10 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi,

I had an odd audio problem so I’ll share here just in case it helps.

When playing a lot of various content in iTunes, I noticed a lot of distortion.
Then I realised that the Equaliser was on and set to “small speakers”. I
turned it off and sorted the problem.

This may be wholly unrelated, but might be worth a look.

Shopping List Revisited

2013-11-10 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I've been doing some work with the very good idea which was posted on this list
a few days ago regarding shopping lists, the idea of using the Reminders app
with Siri is a most practical one though I found - for my particular situation
- that I needed a more flexible platform so here's what I did and perhaps
others may find it helpful.

It seemed to me that if you could use Siri to add items to your Shopping list
using Reminders then you could possibly do the same with other Apps so I tried
using Notes with predictable results, further to this I can print the shopping
list which was what I really wanted, eMail the list, copy the list to the
clipboard and so it goes on, I have to marvel at just how flexible these
solutions can be and thanks one again to the list member who originally started
the whole Shopping List thread off.

Built-in mike on the MacBook Air

Hi all -

I know that this MacBook Air has a built in mike as I've used it for Face Time.
I imagine though that this Air doesn't have the facility to record, will that
be correct? If so, what is a good app for this purpose?

Thanks -

Trash folder on Gmail under Mavericks

2013-11-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am running Mavericks with the recent update to Apple mail.
My mail server is gmail and is set up as imap .

When I look at the trash mail folder on my iMac I see lots of copies of each
message I have been composing. A copy seems to be taken each time I press the
delete key and / or the backspace key. If I look on my iPhone I also see all
these message copies in the trash folder so they must be stored in the trash
folder on the gmail server.

Taking all these copies clearly consumes communication bandwidth and iMac and
gmail storage space. that is bad.

I have searched google for information on gmail and Mavericks and am now
thoroughly confused! SO far I have not seen any information on multiple copies
of messages which I am composing. Pressing the delete key on a message in the
mail inbox or any other folder will move that message to the trash folder which
is to be expected. Could there be an Apple mail bug such that pressing the
delete key to edit a message I am composing also moves that to the trash
folder?

Can anyone cast any light on this?

Best regards

Paul Hopewell

Re: Trash folder on Gmail under Mavericks

2013-11-10 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Strange. I don’t see any of this behavior. I do see drafts of what I”m
composing every time i send a message and those are had to get rid of. Even if
I unstick the store on server under drafts in mail box behavior, the state of
the check box has not been retained. do you have your all mail turned off? I do
and it seems to be working a lot better. Dunno if this will solve your problem
though.

take care.

Re: Built-in mike on the MacBook Air

2013-11-10 Thread Esther
Hello Andy, Gena, and Others,

As Sarah mentioned, you can just launch QuickTime Player on your Mac and record
with that. There's a shortcut to launch a new audio recording of
Command-Control-Option-N. (I had to look this up under the File menu on the
menu bar. The Audio Recording window has a Start recording button that lets
you start and stop the recording, and a Recording Options Menu button that
lets you change the default location for the recording, (which otherwise seems
to be set to Movies for me, and defaults to .m4a format with a name, Audio
Recording).

Also, on the MacBook Air you can plug in the headset with Mic that comes with
the iPhone and use that to record and/or to listen to the playback. Other 3rd
party Headsets with mics that support the iPhone will work here, but normal 3.5
mm patch cables won't. The Apple headset mics and compatible 3rd party Mics
use 3-rings and normal Lavalier mics only use 2 rings. This is why some people
think they can't record on MacBook Airs using the headset port, but that's not
true.

I haven't tried this application since I'm a long time Amadeus Pro user.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

You could also probably use Audacity to record and edit if you want a free
solution. This might be familiar to Linux users.

Re: Built-in mike on the MacBook Air

2013-11-10 Thread Esther
Hi Josh,

You're correct; the announced shortcut of Command-Control-Option-N doesn't work
-- probably a conflict with VoiceOver's shortcut for finding the next auto web
spot. I told you I had to look this up in the File menu, since I usually record
with Amadeus Pro. Just open the new audio session from the file menu of
QuickTime Player.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Built-in mike on the MacBook Air

2013-11-10 Thread Esther
Hello Andy,

The iPhone headset mic will work for recording with QuickTime, without getting
VoiceOver into the recording. You can check by having the recording play back.
You're correct that you need to use the file menu to start a recording and
that the shortcut doesn't work.

You can also use the iPhone headset Mic for Skype calls with the MacBook Air.
Just remember that headsets and Mics with only 2 rings on the 3.5mm plug, which
is most commonly the case, won't work when connected to this headset port.
However, third party headset mics that are designed to work with the iPhone
should also work when plugged in here. They all have the three rings that let
them record and output through the same port.

The Apple headset mics always work, but apparently performance for a few third
party Mics used with the MacBook Air's headset port was flakey under one of
the earlier versions of Mountain Lion. This was reportedly fixed by the Mac OS
X 10.8.5 release.

And I meant that I hadn't tried the software Gena linked to -- I did check
recording with QuickTime and the headset Mic.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

 Hello Andy, Gena, and Others,

As Sarah mentioned, you can just launch QuickTime Player on your Mac and
record with that. There's a shortcut to launch a new audio recording of
Command-Control-Option-N. (I had to look this up under the File menu on
the menu bar. The Audio Recording window has a Start recording button
that lets you start and stop the recording, and a Recording Options Menu
button that lets you change the default location for the recording, (which
otherwise seems to be set to Movies for me, and defaults to .m4a format
 with a name, Audio Recording).

Also, on the MacBook Air you can plug in the headset with Mic that comes
with the iPhone and use that to record and/or to listen to the playback.
Other 3rd party Headsets with mics that support the iPhone will work here,
but normal 3.5 mm patch cables won't. The Apple headset mics and compatible
3rd party Mics use 3-rings and normal Lavalier mics only use 2 rings. This
is why some people think they can't record on MacBook Airs using the headset
 port, but that's not true.

I haven't tried this application since I'm a long time Amadeus Pro user.

Lol. You actually need to do a vo tab then ctrl option cmd n. this works for me
all the time. the vo tab is the pass key through command that comes in handy a
lot. especially when in fusion.

blocking an email address

But one thing I cannot find is how, or if, it is possible to block an email

Can I do this?

Re: blocking an email address

2013-11-10 Thread Sarah k Alawami
I know how to do this sort of using message rules, but they will not carry over
to other devices.

I see you have a gmail account so what you can do is set up a gmail filter to
anything from xyz goes in to gmail trash. I plan on doing a podcast on how to
do this using the standard view soon This is so you can have the server do it
for you so it will go across all devices and so your mac doesn’t have much to
do but synch your account when you next start mail.

Take care.

blocking an email addfress

2013-11-10 Thread Shannon Reece
Hi Sarah,
I’m sorry bugt I really do not undersgand what you just said.
A couple of things:
I have more than one email account. This one is a gmail account yes, but the
others are not.
What I want to know is simply this:
Is there a way in Mail to block an email address?
In Windows mail clients for instance you can block an address across the board
over multiple accounts via the menu sgructure.
If this cannot be done on the Mac that’s fine, but is there a way to do it at
all., even if I have to do it separately for each account?
I have my mail view/options set the way I want them.
Also for me, podcasts are dicey and I listen to very few of them.
A written explanation would be preferable.
Thanks again,
Shannon

Shanon,
You can do this kind of thing with mail rules. Go into Mail Preferences -
Rules tab, and you can add a rule which will delete all messages from a
specific email address.
These are, as far as I’m aware, global.
Best,
Zack.
