Generally electronics stores will turn on VoiceOver for you so that you can
have a play. It might be worth going somewhere close if that is an option
and checking out the IPad so that you can get a feel of what it is like with

Hi there

I am totally blind and I have both. I use both for different things. I
love using my IPad for reading, as the pages don't turn as often as they do
on the phone, and the battery lasts a lot longer. I also use it for word
processing when I'm out and about. I like the Bluetooth keyboard case for
the IPad as everything just folds in on itself. I am not so fond of how the
menus look in settings, I find it more difficult to conceptualise. I think
it all comes down to personal preference.

Cheers

As far as I can see there are no compelling reasons for a blind user to
require an iPad in addition to an iPhone, apart from possible better battery
life.
The physical size of the iPad makes the onscreen keyboard larger but a cheap
external Bluetooth keyboard on an iPhone will give a better keyboard
experience anyway.

If however, you have some useful vision then the situation is completely
different and there are of course lots of advantages in having a bigger
display area to look at. As I am not in that category nobody has ever been
able to explain to me what advantage an iPad would have over an iPhone. At
the margins there is apparently a version of Quick Office on the iPad which
is accessible on that platform whilst it remains inaccessible on the iPhone.
However Pages will meet most word processing needs and I do not routinely
use Spreadsheets on a mobile device.

So in essence the case for a blind user investing in an iPad in addition to
a phone seem very tenuous to me.

Anyway, so, my question is, in Mail, more specifically in Mavericks not
using classic view, I see how to put a mailbox into the favorites list, but
then, how do I remove it out of the favorites list?

Security Software For The Mac

Been a while since I've researched this topic for my own personal use.

Wondering what security software Mac users are running these days.

I still have Macscan loaded on the machines here for spyware removal but don't

Somewhat advanced question about server management

2013-11-16 Thread Christopher Gilland
First off, my apologies to both Gordon and Lynn for all the rejected e-mails
sent to the list from an unauthorized address. You can reject them. I found
out why this was happenning, and the issue has been corrected.

OK, so here’s the deal. I have a copy of OSX server, although I’ve not really
messed with it much yet. The little bit I have looked somewhat overwhelming.
Basically, all I wanna do is set up on the basic standard port 21, an FTP
server where people can download files/folders from my drive. I want to
disable anonymous access, so that users have to have a valid account to log in.
I further want them to be Crooted (or, jailed, as some call it,) into this
directory of my choosing. I however do want them to be able to recurse sub
folders. So, in other words, I want them Crooted into X folder, but I want
them inside X folder to be able to also have read access to folders A, B, and
C, located underneath folder X, and to inherit all permissions down the
hierarchy from folder X. I do not however want them to be able to go any
higher up than folder X. I hope that makes sense. I do not want to grant
write access or delete access or anything of the like. This is only going to
be used for downloading files, and absolutely no more. Yes, I know about file
sharing over the network. That’s not why I’m doing this. I need it set this
way so that someone half way across the country from me, for example, could log
in via ftp and get whatever they need, when they need it. I already do have a
top level domain name which is pointing to my IP address, so that’s not even an
issue. I have resolvers in place, don’t worry. That being said, I’ve not set
up any sort of resolvers through my OSX server software. This is all being
done through an A Record through the dns settings at my local domain registrar.
Trust me, it works. I can ping the domain and see it resolving to my correct
IP address with no packet loss, so that’s fine. I just need the actual ftp
side of it set up. I also do know about openning port 21 on my Linksys WRT 54S
router, and forwarding it to the private IP address associated with my Mac
running OSX server. That’s already been done. Like I say, I’m pretty much
good to go. I just need to know how to actually set up the server itself in
the way I described. I know there are a few other software sollutions out
there for doing ftp servers, and I know that OSX even has one built in that
will work to some extent, but most of them only allow for free, 3 or 4 users.
I may wind up needing more than that. Plus, if down the road I ever want to
enable other servers like Mail, or apache web http or such, I’d rather do it
this way to start with so that I can get a handle on things. I figure once I
know how to set one of these up, it’ll make things easier going forward, as
I’ll betcha there’s probably somewhat of a pattern to doing it.

Anyway, if Gorgon, Lynn, or anyone else at all on here thinks they can help,
I’ll be willing to hear you out, and see if we all can work together here to
get me up and running.

Thank you.

Chris.

I think the price comparison isn't quite correct here. The iPhone 5s costs
£549, and I think I recall that the iPad air was £299 and £399 for the

Just curious. What could be the advantage, say, of an iPad mini overthe
iPhone 5? I'm asking for a reason. I told somebody theother day that I use
my iPhone like a computer, more than I do a phone. I told them i E-Mail,

George,
The VO commands you want are vo-comma to mark an item for dragging, and
vo-period to drop an item. These are listed in VO help. As for the Mailbox

Sinking issues to a 5S am I alone? any tips?

2013-11-16 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Listers,

I've had some serious sinking problems with my new 5S. I'm wondering
if others have seen this behavior and if so are there any solutions.

Currently I can not sink audio books to my iPhone using iTunes. I also have
had trouble sinking ring tones. I have also created some new play lists and so
far they are also not showing up on my phone.

Here is what I've done so far.

When ring tones did not work I followed suggestions from another person having
the same problem. I restored my iphone to factory settings and did a sink from
the cloud rather then the computer. That brought over my custom ring tones.
Later I realized my audio books were missing. Not even a tab for it in the
music App under more.

After many hours on the phone with Apple I have no resolution. I'm thinking I
will probably find additional sinking problems as I use the phone more.

So far my old 4S is still working correctly and it is sinking new and old
materials perfictly. My 5S on the same computer running the same 7.04 OS is
unable to sink.

I'm rather tired of erasing my phone resetting it backing up, and then putting
in my ID over and over and setting up all the different apps and such.

I'll do that again if someone can let me know if it has helped.

Is anyone else having sinking issues with a new 5S specifically one restored
from a 4 S backup?

I'm beginning to wonder if I should just try setting it up as a new phone and
see if that works. could then download the apps one at a time and set them up
again.

Tips appreciated!

One other thing. I purchased Apple Care PLUS and they had to do a diagnostic
test on my iPhone. It tested out perfectly.

update, trying to convert pages document

2013-11-16 Thread Laurel and Stockard
Hey guys,
So, the other day I was trying to convert a pages document to word, using
voiceover on my mac. I go to file, then export, then celect word, follow the
prompts, save it with a different name, and finish. It saves it as a pages
document and will not convert to word. I also tried, as some of you suggested,
converting it to rich text as well as pdf. It won't convert my file to
anything! I'm extremely frustrated, I'm not sure what to do next. Do you know
of any online website that is trustworthy and can convert it for me? Obviously,
apple has a problem with this.
Thanks

MyWay Lite doesn't vibrate anymore

2013-11-16 Thread Chris Goodwin

HI,

I've been using the MyWay Lite app and it used to vibrate when the iPhone
pointed directly at the target point. It no longer does this and I can't
work out why. I've pressed the standard setting button, made sure shaking
is on. Basically I've looked in every setting and all looks fine. I didn't
change anything I think anyway.

And yet, it doesn't vibrate when the phone points directly at the target.

Anyone got any ideas?

My phone does vibrate when I get a call, so I know it can vibrate.
Curiously though, I thought it used to vibrate when using the switch in the
top left to mute, or come off mute, but it doesn't do this anymore either.

Thanks all,

Chris

What happens if you reinstall the app? and have you contacted the developers to
see what the problem could be? Try submitting a formal bug report to them and
seeing if maybe they can work out what th problem is.

Brenda,
I would try to go into my computer and you should see your iPhone in with
the drive list.
When you go into that, all that will be there is your pictures and videos
that are on your iPhone.
I have never tried deleting them from there, but I don't know why you
couldn't, I copy them from there.

When you plug your iPhone into a Windows computer, the camera and scanner

Re: putting photos and vidoes on my computer from my iPhone5

2013-11-16 Thread meadowlark77
Interesting about this, Glenn. You can see both pictures and videos. It’s weird
because they’re called by some pretty strange names, like:

External Storage and some number with letters in the name. There were two of
those folders on my computer and one had the still photos and one had the only
video there was. On the PC, something called Media Player Classic Home Sinema
played the video. I’m going to format the video as an mp4 file, so it can be
played on a regular DVD player.

Thanks.

Take care,

I actually can see it on my computer, but it’s got a weird name to it. If I’m
really careful withit, I can get it. It had already imported the photos to the
dropbox, but the video would not import, so I had to find the video and get it.
It doesn’t show up as a drive letter, but something like:

External Storage, and then has some weird names and numbers on it. It appears
that iTunes, in this case, has to be open in order to see the thing, because if
it isn’t, you can’t see a thing.

 Brenda,
Not sure how it works on a Mac, I am using Windows.
When you plug your iPhone into a Windows computer, the camera and scanner
wizard will ask you if you want to import the pictures.
You can escape out of that window, and go into computer or My Computer,
usually on the desktop if you have classic view set up, and that is where
 the iPod shows up.
The only thing you can see on an IOS device on a Windows computer is the
 pictures folder.
I would assume that on a Mac, you can do the same and it would show up with
 all the other drives.

You catually see a drive in your computer? Is your computer a Mac? That
might be why you can copy. This ought to be interesting. Mine immediately
import to dropbox and they are still on the phone. That would mean that the
next time, when iTunes opens again, they'll be transferred again. Very
interesting. I have not used my iPhone on my Windows 7 computer, so will see
 how that appears.

 Take care,

 Brenda,
I would try to go into my computer and you should see your iPhone in with
 the drive list.
When you go into that, all that will be there is your pictures and videos
 that are on your iPhone.
I have never tried deleting them from there, but I don't know why you
couldn't, I copy them from there.
 HTH.

 Hello y'all,

I hae my phone set up to, immediately on plug-in to iTunes, to transfer
photos and videos from my iPhone5 to my dropbox on my computer. Now, the
question is this. How will they be deleted from the iTunes Library, so they
won't continually transfer, every time I plug in to my PC?
 Thanks in advance,

 Brenda
