Re: Apple's Xcode tutorial

2014-01-08 Thread Geoff Waaler

Hi Laurel and others,

In my experience, the silence was deafening when posting such questions
here. Once I received a private reply suggesting that I join the MV-DEV
group. Until recently, that sadly was a dead list, and I assumed that
StoryBoards and InterfaceBuilder were pretty much unusable with VO.
Recently, the MV-DEV list has come back to life, and apparently there are
blind developers who are successfully exploiting these xCode features. I
have a lot to learn before I get out of lurking mode over there, but the one
time I tried the tutorial I was totally lost and became discouraged before
discovering a work-around.

Anyway, the link for the MV-DEV list is:

http://groups.google.com/group/mv-dev

From recent activity, I would think you'll have much better luck if you

repost over there, and I will definitely follow the thread!!

Best regards.
Geoff

Subject: Apple's Xcode tutorial

Hi guys, so, I found a tutorial on starting out with Xcode by Apple. It
starts by having you create a simple to do list app. I've made it as far
as the "create storyboard" heading section, but now I'm stuck. Could
somebody who is good at Xcode/with voiceover take a look at this and help
me get unstuck? So far I've been able to make everything work well with
voiceover. Here is the link
https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/referencelibrary/GettingStarted/RoadMapiOS/FirstTutorial.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40011343-CH3-SW1

So, if somebody could give me some voiceover tutorials for creating
storyboards and working with that and the next sections of the tutorial,
I'd appreciate it. I'd also appreciate knowing what you guys think of this
tutorial as a whole, helpful, or not.

Thanks
Laurel

Why do you need the conpyter's ID? Can you not just go to the app store, downed
the app and install it?

Take care.

Of course my message should have said VLC plays WMA files fine without the

Just updated to the latest VLC Media Player and it seems more accessible
than ever before, here are several things I've noticed.

You can see the playlist in VLC and manipulate the items within, delete,
play etc, the items are laid out within a table.

The media library control is extensive enough to include UPNP devices on
your network if they exist, such things may include a Media Server managed
by a Fritz! Box, Asus RTN56U router, a WD My Cloud drive, Windows 7 PC or
 other mac.

From here you can navigate the drive or drives connected to that server
and select or search for what you want to hear.

I love vlc and always have loved it. It was always for me accessible as the
developer included help tags. I never used the play list as I didn't need
it. The app plays everything including wmas if you have flip player
installed.

Re: Safari Power Saver

2014-01-08 Thread Dane Trethowan
I did suspect that but wasn't entirely sure as the article I read - though it
mentioned the new Macbook Air - didn't say that this feature was specific to
those machines so thanks for clearing that up.

Hi!

Hope I recalled the name of this feature correctly .

Was wondering if anyone knew about this feature which has been introduced into
OSX Mavericks, I looked it up on the Apple OSX Knowledge base and its
fascinating the way its supposed to work to say the least.

The article I read talks about the function working with Macbook Air computers
so I'm wondering if it would work at all with a 2011 model iMac machine?

One of the things the Power Saver does is to compress memory on the fly when
memory starts getting low thus providing more memory for other applications.

I love vlc and always have loved it. It was always for me accessible as the
developer included help tags. I never used the play list as I didn't need it.
The app plays everything including wmas if you have flip player installed.

Hi,

I am one of those who have found iBooks on the Mac to be frustrating. Have not
done well and for now have gone back to iDevices.

Can anyone offer a few quick tips to improve readability and navigation. Maybe
I have missed something.

Re: Anyone successfully using iBooks on Maverick?

2014-01-08 Thread John Panarese
It depends on the layout of the book. I've read about six books using
iBooks on the Mac. A lot of buttons are not labeled, but you can use
VO-shift-h to have them identified and then use VO-slash to label them yourself.

Anyone successfully using iBooks on Maverick?

2014-01-08 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
Is anyone successfully using iBooks on Maverick with VoiceOver? Or is iBooks on
Maverick not yet fully accessible?

First I have just opened a newly purchased iBook on Maverick and find that the
scroll area contains 4 html files each corresponding to different parts of the
book. I do not understand what is going on here. Opening a different book only
has 3 html files in the scroll area.

Second if I press command+t to open the table of contents I see a new window
containing a table (I know it is a new window because I see it in the list of
windows displayed by VO+F2). Unfortunately if I interact with that table the
table goes away and the window containing that table closes. the same thing
happens if I look at bookmarks.

I mostly want to access the table of contents and use that to go to a desired
section of the book. I also want to stop reading the book now and later return
to where I left off. Is this possible on Maverick?

Fortunately iBooks works much better on my iPhone 3GS under IOS 6.

Should I expect iBooks to work OK with VoiceOver on Maverick? If so what am I
doing wrong?

Many thanks.

airPlay and OSX Mavericks

2014-01-08 Thread Dane Trethowan
Always something to discover or something I've missed long ago it seems .

I like the idea of being able to specify an airPlay device as your sound output
device in System Preferences, that's a nifty feature that will save me a whole
heap of time in the future.

What I've also found is that you cannot set individual airPlay devices for
output as far as I know from other Apps.

For example if you set your Airport Express as your airPlay output device in
Sound Output Devices then that's the only one you can use from other Apps.

I was hoping to be able to set a different airPlay device for Skype say, if I
was in the kitchen I could set Skype to ring on my airPlay device I have out
there thus guaranteeing I'd hear the phone ring whilst preparing meals etc.

As I say its unfortunate the airPlay feature isn't more flexible but perhaps
that may come in time.

Anyway a nice start at least and it does mean that I don't have to use Airfoil
to stream audio from audio sources - other than iTunes - to airPlay devices any
longer from the Mac.

VLC Media Player, I Couldn't Be Happier

2014-01-08 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Just updated to the latest VLC Media Player and it seems more accessible than
ever before, here are several things I've noticed.

You can see the playlist in VLC and manipulate the items within, delete, play
etc, the items are laid out within a table.

The media library control is extensive enough to include UPNP devices on your
network if they exist, such things may include a Media Server managed by a
Fritz! Box, Asus RTN56U router, a WD My Cloud drive, Windows 7 PC or other mac.

>From here you can navigate the drive or drives connected to that server and
>select or search for what you want to hear.

I haven't had a look at the Podcast directory or anything deeper as yet but
others may have done so perhaps they can tell us what they found .

Tips for using iBooks on iMac with VoiceOver

2014-01-08 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
does anyone have any tips on the best way to read iBooks under Mac OS 10.9.1
using VoiceOver? Are any of the iBook preferences especially suitable for
reading with VoiceOver?

I can locate and open books OK and can move to and read next and prior pages
and chapters.

But I have not yet worked out how to do the following:

- Stop reading now, turn off my iMac, start my iMac tomorrow and carry on
reading from where I left off.

- Stop reading now, go to the overall table of contents, and start reading
somewhere else. When I press Command+T to get to the table of contents it seems
to be a mini-table just for the current chapter rather than the entire book. If
I try to interact with the table it goes away.

I also have iBooks on my iPhone 3GS under IOS 6 latest version. I would like to
be able to stop reading now on my iMac and later go to my iPhone and start
reading where I left off on my iMac (and vice versa). I understand that this is
possible but it is not yet obvious how to do it.

Many thanks for any tips.
