thank you so much for all that info it has been a great help. Talking about
the fingertip touch ID on iPhone 5s is it possible to turn that feature off so
you can just use the Home button as in the older phones.

Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S which is about 6 months old and which is currently
running IOS 8.3.

TouchID worked well for the first 4 months or so, but alas is now
unreliable. If I register a new fingerprint it works fine for about 2 days
and then the finger print is no longer recognised.

Do any listers have tips on the best way to position fingers or thumbs
during the initial fingerprint registration or any other tips on how to
make touchID reliable. I have tried cleaning the home button with a dry
cloth and also tried registering the same finger several times as if they
were all different fingers. Would it help to clean the home button in some
other way?

Many thanks for any tips. TouchID is great while it works!

Do any other listers have problems with TouchID on iPhone 5S? Is TouchID
on iPhone 6 reliable?

Best regards….

I have never gotten the touch ID to work. I have come to the conclusion that my
fingers are just too small to cover the entire area that it needs to scan.

Heck, if you have young kids who'd need it, don't even waist your time
buying the electronic wipes... even just a standard baby wipe will do the
trick. Just, if you use one, make sure you only do it on your finger.
Don't do it on the home button itself. Especially not if the type you're
using has lotion or aloe etc. in it, as that most likely will make it worse.

Well, I personally recommend the wipes because after I use them on the iPhone,
they make my iPhone feel like it just came out of the Apple packaging. Believe
me, Christopher, I do have my reasons for recommending it. It sucks to read
messages like how it's weird we are having problems with our iPhones when you
don’t have any. And hey, don't waste your time on those wipes, either.

Re: [Mac-access]: Problems with touchID on iPhone 5S

2015-04-15 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
That shouldn't most likely be the case. It doesn't take much to scan it.
Are you using the pad of your finger or your finger tip? If your finger
tip, then there's you're problem right there. It needs to be the entire
soft pad of the finger.

I have never gotten the touch ID to work. I have come to the conclusion
that my fingers are just too small to cover the entire area that it needs
to scan.

Hello,
I have an iPhone 5S which is about 6 months old and which is currently
running IOS 8.3.

TouchID worked well for the first 4 months or so, but alas is now
unreliable. If I register a new fingerprint it works fine for about 2
days and then the finger print is no longer recognised.

Do any listers have tips on the best way to position fingers or thumbs
during the initial fingerprint registration or any other tips on how to
make touchID reliable. I have tried cleaning the home button with a dry
cloth and also tried registering the same finger several times as if
they were all different fingers. Would it help to clean the home button
in some other way?

Many thanks for any tips. TouchID is great while it works!

Do any other listers have problems with TouchID on iPhone 5S? Is TouchID
on iPhone 6 reliable?

Best regards….

Mary, there is no need to get defensive. I didn't say that they wouldn't
work. I just said there is no reason to buy them if you already have other
resources. I wasn't dismissing your suggestion, and if you took it that
way, then you definitely read between the lines. That was so! not what I
was trying to say. I'm sorry that you took it that way.

Well, I personally recommend the wipes because after I use them on the
iPhone, they make my iPhone feel like it just came out of the Apple
packaging. Believe me, Christopher, I do have my reasons for recommending
it. It sucks to read messages like how it's weird we are having problems
with our iPhones when you don’t have any. And hey, don't waste your time
on those wipes, either.

Heck, if you have young kids who'd need it, don't even waist your time
buying the electronic wipes... even just a standard baby wipe will do the
trick. Just, if you use one, make sure you only do it on your finger.
Don't do it on the home button itself. Especially not if the type you're
using has lotion or aloe etc. in it, as that most likely will make it
worse.

[Mac-access]: Some Apple news

2015-04-15 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Hi all,
some Apple news. Some products will be purchased in the future which dad
has allowed me to consider. The first is an Apple TV which is a small
media streaming box that is connected to your TV and allows you to
stream anything from media stored in iTunes either for PC or Mac to TV
shows and movies either purchased from the iTunes Store or streamed from
a service like Netflix which as of yesterday is now providing audio
description. The device costs £99.00 UK but extra charges may apply
especially if you subscribe to services like Netflix which is
£6.00/month UK. The second product to be considered is the Apple Watch.
Dad is hinting I can do allsorts from my writs without getting my phone
out of my pocket. But like I told him it is only compatible with the
iPhone 5 and later so this will definitely be a future purchase whereas
the Apple TV is a near future purchase. He sounds really excited that
they both talk. If anyone has an Apple TV please tell me what you think
of it. Thank you in advance! Both products were discussed during our
pints this afternoon.

Re: [Mac-access]: IOS 8.3: double and triple characters using BT keyboards

2015-04-15 Thread Diane Bomare
Turning quick nav on/off is not helping me, at all. Even unpairing and
re-pairing does not help. Only rebooting the phone helps. Definitely not a
keyboard problem, as it happens with both of my BT keyboards, Apple and Amazon
basic. I don't know what triggers it, as sometimes it starts when the keyboard
is first turned on, sometimes after it has been connected but not used for
several hours, and, most annoyingly, in the middle of writing.

This problem was intermittent under 8.2, but happens several times a day, under
8.3.

I hate inconsistent problems! Some of us have it, and others don't. Also, this
has happened whether my phone is charging or not.

Re: [Mac-access]: IOS BT keyboards was re:: Iphone 5 or 4S

2015-04-15 Thread Diane Bomare
If you are asking about the Apple BT keyboard, it is the top rightmost key. It
toggles between the virtual keyboard on/off.
The key location is different on some other BT keyboards. On the Amazon Basics
keyboard, it is the key to the left of the rightmost key on the top row.Diane

Re: [Mac-access]: Some Apple news

2015-04-15 Thread Diane Bomare

The current AppleTV model has been out for a few years, and a new one is
expected to be released in late June or early July. No doubt, it will be more
expensive, but it may have features that you can't live without, or make the
current model drop even more.

I love my AppleTV, and have it connected via an optical cable to my stereo
system. It is easy to use it with its remote or via the iPhone. There is no
reason to have it connected to a television, if you cannot see the screen.
VoiceOver is on by default, but, is difficult to turn on, if it is turned off
at the beginning. At least, without sight, it is difficult to get it back, if
it is bypassed at the beginning. Diane Bomar

2015-04-15 Thread Diane Bomare

You don't have to set it up, but, it is certainly easier than typing in
passcode and/or password.
It is pretty easy to set up, and it is normal for it to ask you to reposition
your finger during setup. It wants an image of various ways you may touch the
home button.
You can set up to 5 fingerprints, and edit the names of each.

Hi,

As a follow up on the Apple TV and NetFlicks, can anyone confirm its
availability in Canada….

David Woodbridge did a great tutorial on AppleVis today and I followed it
through. Sadly—unless I missed a step in his instructions, I have the feeling
that Canada is not making audio descriptions available…. Would, as I say,
really want to confirm this.

movies either purchased from the iTunes Store or streamed from a service
like Netflix which as of yesterday is now providing audio description.
The device costs £99.00 UK but extra charges may apply especially if you
subscribe to services like Netflix which is £6.00/month UK. The second
product to be considered is the Apple Watch. Dad is hinting I can do
allsorts from my writs without getting my phone out of my pocket. But
like I told him it is only compatible with the iPhone 5 and later so this
will definitely be a future purchase whereas the Apple TV is a near
future purchase. He sounds really excited that they both talk. If anyone
has an Apple TV please tell me what you think of it. Thank you in
advance! Both products were discussed during our pints this afternoon.

Hi,

As a follow up on the Apple TV and NetFlicks, can anyone confirm its
availability in Canada….

David Woodbridge did a great tutorial on AppleVis today and I followed it
through. Sadly—unless I missed a step in his instructions, I have the
feeling that Canada is not making audio descriptions available…. Would, as
I say, really want to confirm this.

Re: [Mac-access]: reliable braille translation software.

2015-04-15 Thread Travis Siegel
This depends on how much work you want to do when formatting your output.
nfbtrans does what I need quite nicely, and I've never used anything else for
my braille translation needs, and I've used it on dos, linux, osx, and even
compiled a version for bsd (although I never used it).
It's not as automatic as something like duxbury, but if you're willing to spend
the time to do your own formatting, it can easily be used for commercial
quality production.
And, the fact that it's free doesn't hurt either.
