Skype is audio only

2014-04-29 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

I can't seem to get my Skype on my iPhone to work with video. I only ever get
the option to have an audio call.

At some point in the past I've definitely had video so don't know why it isn't
working now. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Chris

Recording radio on iPhone

2014-04-29 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

Does anyone know of an app which will allow me to schedule times to record
radio programmes? I particularly want to record radio 4 in the UK for some
programmes which aren't put onto iPlayer.

So I'd ideally like to programme it to record at 6:30pm every Monday on Radio
4. I guess I'm after a PVR but on my iPhone for radio.

Thanks,

Chris

Spanish dictionary

2014-01-12 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

I'm lucky enough to be going off to a Spanish speaking country next week and
would like to know if anyone has experience with a good but VoiceOver
compatible iPhone English Spanish dictionary app?

I'm after a dictionary primarily, but don't mind learning about translaters too.

Many thanks,

Managing contacts

2013-12-27 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all, and hope you are all having a nice Christmas (if you celebrate it),

I want to improve how I manage contacts on my iPhone 4S ios7. I want to be
able to use my Windows XP computer to edit names, phone numbers and email
addresses of my contacts.

So I've plugged my phone into my computer, iTunes has started up and I've done
a backup of my phone.

Searching on the net, I understand I've got to use Windows Contacts, or my
Address Book, to do the editting of my contacts. But a couple of things:

1. I already have 600 email addresses in my address book and I don't want to
get these mixed up with my iPhone contacts.
2. I don't see how to view the contacts I've got onto my computer via the
backup with Address Book. And what is Windows Contacts anyway?

I'm sure this is a really common thing and I would imagine there are already
good instructions somewhere, so hoping someone can point me in the right
direction for detailed information.

Ho ho ho,

Chris

VoiceOver going mute

2013-12-15 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi,

I've had the following experience on my iPhone twice now where VoiceOver gets
muted and it can't easily be unmuted.

When in an application the volume is turned down to zero with the button on the
side. The app is then closed and/or the phone locked. When I unlock the phone
VoiceOver is now silent. VoiceOver is running because icons need a double tap,
but raising the volume doesn't help. Indeed, the volume in settings reads 100%.

The solution to the problem is to run the app which was last being run, and
then the volume buttons do as expected.

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

I may not have exactly described how the problem comes about, but its as close
as I can work out at the mo. It may also have something to do with VO being on
the triple home button press toggle.

Best to all,

chris

How do Apple make their voices?

2013-12-11 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi,

Text to speech, or just general speech synthesis is a big topic. To find out
more I think the wikipedia article is a good place:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_synthesis

which describes the many approaches to generating speech. It will probably
take several reads to understand most of what is there, and it's quite long
(and comprehensive). I'm sure there will be other articles on the net too
which you can google.

Cheers,

GigBabyFree

2013-12-07 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi Esther,

Thanks for the app GigBabyFree. It might well be fun to train along to the
drum beat rather than just a metronome. I prefer metronomes rather than tunes
as I like to be precise about the tempo.

How though can I remove the selected rhythm and return back to a plain
metronome?

Thanks,

A cautionary tale of an ios upgrade

2013-12-07 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

I went to upgrade my iPhone 4S from (I guess) ios6 to ios7.0.4 on Wednesday
evening this week. I'd seen the option there for several months but had held
back as being mostly used to Microsoft that I should hold back from the first
version of a new release.

Well, I started the upgrade via my wi-fi and after a short time the phone
restarted itself. Or rather, it went to a screen with the apple logo on and
something like a signpost underneath. And it sat there. After 20 mins I tried
to shut it off which didn't work. Had to do a hard reset with top button and
home key at the same time. All attempts to switch the phone back on gave the
same screen which then went blank after about 20 seconds.

Basically, my phone wasn't working.

A google told me I had to restore my phone. So I started iTunes and connected
my phone to my Windows laptop. iTunes detected a phone that needed restoring
but Jaws couldn't locate any button I was expecting to see labelled "Restore".
My sighted wife was able to see it though and started the process. Alas,
iTunes eventually returned with a message saying "This phone could not be
restored".

Fortunately I live in a city which has an Apple store. I trotted off to the
shop and they were very helpful and went through the restore process. In less
than 10 minutes my phone was up and running again and the assistant did things
like log me back into iCloud and set up my phone to back up to iCloud.
Unfortunatley, it hadn't been backing up before and all my data was lost. This
in practice meant my contacts, and settings within apps, and the photos I had
on the phone at the time. The assistant downloaded all my apps for me though
as there was a "download all" function.

the reason the assistant thought her restore worked was that at the shop, the
firmware was also updated and not just the ios.

I had to return another day with my old Nokia phone so they could transfer all
my contacts again.

I've spent a fairly jolly couple of days now re-organising all my apps and
running each of them and setting up various configurations and favourites.
Still some way to go on this.

I don't use my iPhone for music so had never plugged it into iTunes other than
once or twice just to see what it all looked like. iTunes is a pretty tricky
app with Jaws. But I had no idea it was a tool to use to help backup my phone.

I need to learn more about backing up I think.

The assistant at the Apple store said the most likely reason for my problem was
that a bit of data went missing when I did the update via wi-fi and she always
does it when the phone is powered. It sounds a bit of a funny reason but I
don't know enough to dispute her.

Not sure what the moral of the story is.

Best,

Chris

I need a VO accessible metronome or beeping app

2013-12-03 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

I do a lot of cycle training on a static bike and my coach sets me sessions
where I need to cycle at 70 revs per minute, 80 rpm, 90 rpm, 100 rpm and so on.
I therefore want an app that beeps at these kinds of rates.

I've looked at about 4 or 5 musicians metronome apps where all but one wasn't
usable with voice over. the one that I could just about use though wouldn't
let me set the rpm as I wanted - it kept to 4 bpm intervals.

I've googled the topic without luck.

Can anyone suggest an app where I can set the beeps per minute so I can then
cycle along at that speed for up to about 6 minutes at a time?

Many thanks all,

Chris

Any good reason not to go to ios7?

2013-12-01 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

I have my iPhone 4S and have held back from updating to ios7 in case it isn't
so accessible.

Are there any good reasons not to update?

I use my phone with VO and mostly without looking at the screen, though I can
see positions of some screen content in low light levels.

RE: iPhone docker

2013-11-21 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi chris,

With the docking stations I've looked at, the phone is cradled in the near
vertical. I've assumed that this would smother the microphone. That's why I
wanted the docker to have its own microphone. But I might be wrong of course.
And as you say, the iPhone mike is pretty good.

does anyone have any direct experience?

And on a related but different point...

I've tried a few audio recording apps such as iTalk. Voice Recorder just seems
awful to me. but when I use these other apps, as soon as I hit the record
button, VO freezes and in fact, the phone seems to freeze up. I had to do a
hard reset to bring it back to life.

Does anyone have an audio recording app that is VO friendly on a 4S?

Cheers,

Chris

iPhone docker

2013-11-20 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

I'm after an iPhone docker for my iPhone 4S which has reasonable speakers
for playing music, a microphone for Skype calls and one that charges the
phone as well rather than using blue tooth to connect which will just drain
it.

I'm struggling to find this combination. Any suggestions?

MyWay Lite doesn't vibrate anymore

2013-11-16 Thread Chris Goodwin

HI,

I've been using the MyWay Lite app and it used to vibrate when the iPhone
pointed directly at the target point. It no longer does this and I can't
work out why. I've pressed the standard setting button, made sure shaking
is on. Basically I've looked in every setting and all looks fine. I didn't
change anything I think anyway.

And yet, it doesn't vibrate when the phone points directly at the target.

Anyone got any ideas?

My phone does vibrate when I get a call, so I know it can vibrate.
Curiously though, I thought it used to vibrate when using the switch in the
top left to mute, or come off mute, but it doesn't do this anymore either.

Thanks all,

Chris

Ending a phone call on iPhone

2013-10-25 Thread Chris Goodwin

Hello all,

Ironically, one of the trickiest things I'm finding to do with my iPhone is
to end a phone call. If I call someone using Siri then two finger double
tap seems amazingly unreliable.VoiceOver seems either to shut up or be
very quiet.

Is it just me or is there a reliable way of ending a call?

I can't depend on the other end hanging up - I struggled to end a call today
when the number I called was engaged.

Thanks,

Chris

iPhone app so I can go for a walk in the woods

2013-10-19 Thread Chris Goodwin
Hi all,

Having switched to an iPhone from a simbian, I'm now at the stage of no longer
wanting to throw my iPhone down the garden but can see how the many apps are
actually practical and useful.

One thing I was wondering if there is an app for though...

Could someone go out for a walk, logging their route as they went on their
phone. They then pass me the route they took, and I can then follow that same
route.

I am after a sat nav for walking, but also where I have defined the route to
take - not just the start and end points.

I would like Voiceover to give me directions e.g. Continue on bearing 0 degrees
for 100 metres, turn right in 10 metres and so on.

My specific purpose is to see if I can go for a walk in the woods by myself. I
live near a large forest which has a large network of well defined paths on it
and I think my vision is good enough to follow a path, but I need to know which
path is the right one.

Other useful features might be for the person laying the path to be able to set
comments such as "Gate across path with handle to the right".

Browsing the app store there are many GPS map applications but I suspect they
are too graphically orientated and voiceover wouldn't give me sat nav like
directions.

Does anyone know of any apps that could do the job I'm after?

thanks all,

Chris
