Scripts not showing up in menu bar.

2014-02-23 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

Not sure what's amiss here. I created a Scripts folder in ~/Library and copied
some applescript in there. I then opened Applescript edit, and ticked the box
in its preferences to show the scripts in the menu bar. However they're not
showing up. Anyone know what I'm missing?

Cheers,

Yup absolutely. As I said, they asked me to test it. They have already taken
note of the fixes for the Mac version I've suggested. They were very pleased
when I got in touch.

Particularly for Dane, but a general comment would be don't buy Diet Coda for

I'm not criticising the devs here. It was at their instigation that I

They also do Transmit Zak which is in my view the best FTP/SFTP client on Mac.
It's no bother at all to contact them, I just wanted to check here first to see
if anyone had a direct line into someone senior in the company.

Cheers.

help configuring a new Macbook Pro

2014-02-18 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi folks,

I have hit a wee snag setting up a new Macbook Pro. Many of the keyboard
shortcuts I’ve used in the past no longer seem to work. For example, ctrl-f2
for menu and ctrl-f3 for Doc. I’ve enabled the appropriate setting in the
Keyboard settings to ensure function keys behave as normal.

If anyone can think of a reason why they have disappeared that would be great.

Cheers,

Dónal

Folks,

I note that the application named in the subject is on sale presently from
macupdate. Just wondering whether, given the improvements in Pages, there is
anything Nisus does that pages doesn't?

Thanks for any info,

Re: issue with the newest key note

2014-02-07 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi Daniela,

I agree new keynote is a revelation. One thing that is interesting is the fact
that when in Slideshow mode, the text content appears in ‘edit’ fields. Wonder
why they did that.

numbers: file won't go away.

2014-02-06 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi folks,

Righty, here’s an odd one. I was working on two numbers files a few weeks ago.
Ever since, when I open Numbers, those files keep opening. Even though I
close the windows each time, they won’t go away. They are, if you will, the
rhubarb of files.

So, does anyone know how to stop them opening each time I open numbers?

Thanking you,

Dónal

Very much sarah thank you. I never got around to buying sarchiver and then it

Hi Anne,

Great to hear you reported this one too. I had actually encountered this with
the very scanned signature you alluded to in your post. I tend to get working
eyes to look over documents, and they spotted that the signature was off. I’ve
put a bug report in about this one so hopefully something comes of it.

iwork updates: super news.

2014-01-24 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Morning people,

I don’t know if any of you have downloaded the new updates to iWork, but I’ve
noticed two things of interest:

1. the really big news from my perspective is that VO now reads Keynote in
Slideshow mode. I’ve not tested this with things like multimedia (video audio)
etc, but it’s certainly a step forward.

2. Here’s one for Anne Robertson: You can once again assign shortcuts to
styles. This, again, is great because it speeds things up.

Now I’ve not tested the updates in any great depth, but wanted to post this
here to let people know. The Keynote improvement has literally made my day!

Hi there,

That’s an excellent suggestion. Containers are not something I use often. The
mail app was just an example, but I take your point that this would work very
well.

Cheers,

Ipad: external keyboard and jumping to different parts of the UI

2014-01-20 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

I’m using the iPad air with the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard cover. I’ll
digress for a second to say that this is a lovely accessory for the iPad air.

I have a situation where I have a long long list of emails in one of my
folders. There are several hundred in there. Is there a way to move to the
message content (using the keyboard) once a message has been selected?

At present I find myself using VO-right arrow to simply move from element to
element. I can, of course, simply tap the screen at the location where the
message is displayed but if possible I’d rather not take my hands off the
keyboard. I’m lazy, what can I say.

Thanks much,

Hi Esther,

Many thanks indeed for this. I’ve been using the Paprika manager for a while
now and really like it. I love the browser/search facility. However there are
certain features of the MacGourmet deluxe that I like, such as the ones you
mention.

Re: Apple's Xcode tutorial

2014-01-09 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi Laurel and Jeff,

Sorry Laurel, I must have missed your original post over the Christmas period.
I more or less tuned out of all email for about two weeks.

I tried that tutorial a while back and got lost. It’s probably my background
and training, but I always seem to have more luck following books rather than
tutorials. If you’re a bookshare member, they have plenty of XCode stuff.
Indeed, all oreilly books are there by default.

Here’s an offer for you: if you want to take a look on sites like:

www.oreilly.com
www.informit.com
www.apress.com
www.bookshare.org

you might find books you find interesting. The first thing I’d do is start by
learning the Objective C language. All cocoa apps are built on this, and a
knowledge will help you. Anyway back to my offer: If you find books that you
think might be of use, either post here or contact me offlist and I’ll happily
take a look for you and tell you what I think.

I’ve not done app development, but I’ve written utilities for mac. I’m a
university academic who teaches programming (among other things) so I’ve needed
to know the basics. App/application development is my study gig for the next
few months as I suspect I may get a course in mobile development to teach next
year.

Definitely look at MV-Dev. It’s a nice community and nobody gets flamed for
asking anything.

Hope these ramblings help,

Re: 1Password: is it actually worth the money?

2014-01-03 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
well having been using it for a week I can certainly vouch for the value for
money. It’s great. One setting I’d like to see though is the ability for it
to start up on system start.

good scanner (was: Re: Suggestions for scanning printed books with an iPhone)

2013-12-31 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi folks,

Just changing the subject to reflect a question I’ve been meaning to ask.
James’ original question reminded me to ask the list for a recommendation for a
good scanner to work with the mac? I use Finereader and VuScan mainly. I’m
getting this for work, so I’m interested in something good and fast rather than
something cheap that gets the job done.

Thanks as ever and a happy new year to all,

1Password: is it actually worth the money?

2013-12-29 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

I’ve been given a couple of AppStore vouchers so I’m looking at the apps

sceptical whether I actually need it. I think I’m reasonably secure online,
however this application (and app) does look rather good. anyone any thoughts?

Donal.
