Hi!

I fixed the problem I was having where the iPhone would appear to go to
sleep when trying to use it to make and receive calls with FaceTime.

Actually what was happening was that the iPhone and the Mac were on 2
different Wi-Fi networks though both those networks are part of my Home
Network itself, one Wi-Fi network is a 2.4GHZ transmission and the other a
5.0GHZ.

To use faceTime with your iPhone both devices MUST BE explicitly on the same
Wi-Fi network it seems.

A useful and helpful tip I’m sure for anyone who is planning to use this
method of communications.

Dane,
The way I do it is to do the forward command, and usually the address of the
original sender is in the body of the message, so I tab to the message and
select and copy the address, and then shift + tab back to the "to" field and
paste it there.

Hi!

There are times when I may wish to reply to someone privately off list, how
does one go about doing that?

I remember moving the mosque to the senders eMail address field in the
headers section of the eMail, holding down the ctrl key whilst I click the
mouse and then a menu would pop up with a “Copy Address” option which would
copy the senders eMail address to the Clipboard, I could then use command-r
to reply to the eMail replacing the list eMail address with the senders.

Either this option doesn’t seem to work any longer or my memory isn’t as
good as it once was - most likely the latter . - so if anyone has any
tips then they would be very much appreciated.

at a right price, absolutely free! You can download the individual apps
Word, Excel and PowerPoint right now from your nearest App Store. Best
of all, it is very, very accessible! I tried both Word and Excel and can

Re: [Mac-access]: Flash Upgrade; Is There Ever an End to this Process?

2014-11-10 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Flash is quite annoying on the PC side as well.
If you don't uncheck the Google Chrome, and the Google Toolbar, they will
get installed, and if you go to install them, you are forced to answer
questions as to why you are uninstalling them before they will close the
uninstall program.
And after flash installs, you are taken to Adobe's page of more of their
crappy offers.
I wish we could do away with it all together.

My father's iMac as well as mine at work both report
that flash needs to be upgraded for security fixes. Since it was
there at one time and only needs to be replaced with a new
version, one would think this would almost be automatic. You'd
just click something like "upgrade now" and be done.
Each time I have tried to make flash work again, I get
trapped in something that Orwell or Dante would appreciate. It
seems as if you have to run the Adobe gontlet of mercantile
pitches for photoshop and other products and all I want is to
fix flash.
What is the minimum amount of hoops one must jump
through to get rid of this problem?

Thanks for any and all good suggestions.

I use a PC, but don't Macs have a key equivalent to the PC's "applications

The ZIP file is just a zipped up file that will extract out to a new folder

I'd say that if you don't see the screen, then the iPod is the way to go.
Also, you can buy a GPS battery that is a case for the iPod, and use it for

Sure you could do that with an iPad, but unless you carry a purse, it will

Dear All.
I am having real problems with my degree and it is stumping my University IT
team as well.

I am often given links to e books to read. I am usually given two options -
download a pdf or read online. I have permission to do so. The downloaded
pdfs appear blank, just constantly saying "new line, new line" in preview.
When I try to read online I cannot seem to access the text to start reading.
My wife says the text is there but I can't get the voice over cursor into
the document. I don't know if it is a frames issue or a DRM problem.

Has anyone out there solved this or come across the same?

Thanks in advance.
Ian

I had the Otter Box Defender series on my iPhone, and it was too much, too

I would recommend the Otter Box commuter line, still probably the best

For the no VoiceOver, you can use computer speakers.

2014-12-20 Thread Glenn / Lenny
I have suggested to Freedom Scientific too that they do something similar,
NVDA later did this, only I don't know if NVDA does it in stereo. What I
suggested to FS was that JFW could offer a setting where the text of icons
could be spoken in stereo and with a pitch change, according to where the
icon was on the screen. This was perhaps 5 or 6 years back, but it fell on
Deaf ears.

I as stated before use down cast. It's more versatile, more robust then
apple's podcasts was, and ever will be, plus the devs are wonderful to work
with. I have for 2 years now abandoned iTunes podcasts as it was way too
clunky.

Subject: [Mac-access]: Major irritation, and Baffling Wifi Trouble

OK, this is absolutely driving my mom and I both crazy! Actually, I'm
writing this message on her behalf in hopes that we can figure this out. I
told her that I fear, she might have a shot wifi adapter, but God only
knows!

So, here's the situation. My mother went about a month ago at the
beginning of December, to the Verizon store, and activated service with an
IPad Air... Not the newer Air, just the older first generation. Nice unit,
by the way. I bought a wifi only model about half a week later, if that
tells you all how jealous I was. LOL! Anyway, one thing about my mother
that you have to understand is, first off, she's not computer savvy at all.
She can do e-mail, and maybe incredibly basic internet browsing which mainly
consists of shopping on Amazon if needed, shopping on the Keurig web site,
then doing her online banking. She can do more than that if she really puts
her mind to it, but it's extremely rare. It literally took almost 3 years
to convince her to get a newer IPad. She jumped from a wifi only first
generation up to what she now has.

One thing about my mom, too is, she never ever runs software updates. I
don't care if it's a major update, or not, she simply refuses. Every time
that an update comes out which addresses some of the issues she's having,
she tells me she's not going to do it, as quote unquote, it'll screw up her
system. A lot of times, I wind up having to do the updates when she is at
work and I'm at home alone, just because otherwise, she'll find out and
throw her usual tantrom about why she doesn't want me doing anything. I
could go on to tell you about how she didn't believe a word I said when I
told her Verizon won't take a 1st gen IPad, it's so old, never mind the fact
that it's not on their network, and is wifi only. Never mind that she
didn't believe me when I told her you can't sync a backup of I O S 4 to an I
O S 8 device. Finally the lady at the Verizon store had to basically set
her straight since my mom wouldn't listen to a darn thing I said.

Anyway, my point is, God knows what she's done, if anything to cause this.
It's really hard to say. So, she gets her IPad, and she and I go back and
forth, forth and back, about how for her needs, Yosemite would be a good
free update, and would insure that things worked optymally with her new
IPad. It took me almost 4 nights to finally convince her. Finally, she
told me to do it, and run the update. So, I get it updated for her, and all
is working flawlessly. I turned on automatic updates, so that when one came
out, it would notify her. I figured that might make her feel a bit more
confident to update things if she sees it pop up on her screen, as then she
doesn't have to take her stupid little son's word for things. Pardon my
insult to myself. LOL! So, finally, about half a week ago, she comes
practically screaming! her head off at me from down stairs, "Chris, what the
hell did you do to my mac!" I was like, um... for one, you mind being a bit
more polite? Secondly, I didn't do anything... Why? She starts barking
about how it doesn't work. I ran an update and now it's gonna crash, she
knows it, as she's seeing early signs of it. When I asked her to describe

dropping offline literally every 10 or so seconds. The icon up in the menu
extras keeps saying no signal. This is very very strange, as the very
little it does connect, it has 4 of 4 bars.

I went online and looked, only to find that for Yosemite, Apple somewhat
recently released an update which fixed wifi issues for some users. I'm not
totally sure what the specifics are of this, or if my mother was one of the
effected people, but I made her aware of this, and told her, this is why you
need to run updates when prompted. She still yelled at me, telling me I
didn't know jack crap, and to leave her quote unquote, broken mac mini

work, in an absolutely fowel mood, and tells me, "Fix my mac, and do it now!
I can't get online, and I need to do some business." As if she couldn't do
it with her work laptop instead. Anyway, so once I finally convinced her

Re: [Mac-access]: Major irritation, and Baffling Wifi Trouble

2014-12-31 Thread Glenn / Lenny

I do think people are too quick to upgrade when an upgrade comes out.
If one has no burning need to have an upgrade, why do it?
There is probably nothing wrong with the current version one is using, when
an upgrade comes out, so we should not be in such a hurry to grab that new
shiny upgrade.
But if one does make such a plunge, you would be wise to get subsequent
updates, as they probably have fixes for the bugs in that major release.
A bit more of the adage:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
is in order.

I am afraid in this case of Yosemite your Mum may have had a point.

Luckily I have a constant ether net connection but I have observed
people tearing their hair out on various lists over wifi connection
issues since Yosemite came out. As you are aware Apple tried to address
some of these Wi-Fi dropping out problems with the last Yosemite update
but I have noted from reading RSS feeds etc that many are still
complaining even after the latest update that the alleged fix from Apple
has failed to resolve the problem.

I have not watched this too closely as I do not use Wi-Fi on my Mac but
this is certainly one of the most regrettable deficiencies in the
Yosemite release. The peculiar thing is that it seems failry random in
the models it affects. I think people on this list have reported for
example that their MBP connects fine with Yosemite whilst their MBA has
this problem, or it might have been vice versa.

Sorry not to be more helpful but just to warn you it may not in fact be
resolvable until until Apple finally mends this part of Yosemite.

I'm trying to type in my gmail address, and every freaking time I do, as
soon as I type the letter m at the ending of the .com in my address, I get
the 3 little bubble popup tone sound, I can't flick down, try as I may, and
no matter how much I try editting, it insists that it wants to make my gmail
address disappear and simply just say the word Maila. "M A I L A." Yes, I
have turned off all the text corrections that I'm aware of. It's not doing
any good. I've even tried with a bluetooth keyboard, and it's not helping.
If anyone has any idea, let me know as, most things on my IPhone I use are
tied to my GMail address, so this in itself would practically be a deal
breaker for me to go back to Android and not use I O S anymore. I love I O
S, don't get me wrong, but if I can't do something effectively as simple as
typing my e-mail address, even after turning off all the word prediction
options, then to me, that's downright pathetic!

Chris.

Is this the case?
If so, can someone share the steps?

I have done that one before, but I probably did not explain it well, I

Good morning,
Depending on the radio that you have, you should be able to record
programming from serious XM content. You cannot do it from the app or from
their website.

Re: [Mac-access]: Getting Skype to Work Properly

2015-01-20 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Isn't Skype now a Microsoft product?
I believe that MS dropped support for Skype, and the State Of Nebraska state
agencies are blocked from using Skype.
I found this out when I purchased an I.D.Mate Quest for a client, planning
on my client using Skype for some assistance, and I could not get it to
work, there was no Skype in the menus, so I called Envision America about
it, and they said since Microsoft no longer supports Skype, that they
dropped it from their product.
So perhaps Skype is down for all networks.
I am just speculating though.

[Mac-access]: receiving network media on my IOS

2015-01-25 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Hi All,
I am working on setting up my Raspberry PI to transmit media over my home
LAN.
I have installed DarkIce and IceCast on my RPI, and I am in the process of
figuring out how to get it going.
I plan on using my iPhone as one of my devices for listening.
My question here is, what are some apps for finding media on my LAN?
Thanks.

I see that TuneIn radio is supposed to do this, but I think that is for when
I start streaming on the WAN, right now, I am just trying to stream on the

Re: [Mac-access]: An iPad Question.

2015-01-28 Thread Glenn / Lenny
This is one of the things I hate about iPads, and find the phones easier, as
when you close a window, you are immediately on the "back" button, and iPads
don't do that.
Closing out the windows you are in and backing out properly seems
impossible.
I have tried the closing of the hand thing, but when I go back in, to
"settings" for example, then all the windows are still open, and I like to
cleanly back out of these windows.

Subject: [Mac-access]: An iPad Question.

Hello Folks:

I am trying to help a person with her iPad and Voiceover. I have an iPhone
but not an iPad.

The problem is that, if she opens an item, for example Bluetooth settings
under settings, in stead of her speech focused in the Bluetooth setup menu,
it goes back to the Setup menu. She then has to swipe quite a few times in
order to enter the opened Bluetooth settings menu.

Is there a setting on the iPad to prevent that from happening? Is that a
"container" thing?

Thanks all over the place gang.

[Mac-access]: iHome keyboard with an iPad

2015-02-03 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Hi All,
A client just bought a brand-new iPad, and she went to Walmart to get a
portfolio keyboard/case, of the iHome brand.
She said that she was not able to input anything or even arrow around while
VoiceOver was running.
But as soon as she turned VO off, the keyboard worked fine.
Has anyone here had any luck with this brand on any IOS products?
Thanks.

OK guys,

I've heard horror story after horror story about the IPhone 6, and 6 Plus
bending. I'm admittedly now a little probably worked up over the hife.

I'm probably being way over over paranoid, and normally, I don't fall for
crap like this, but I will admit. Out of its case, my new IPhone 6 Plus
does! feel very very flimsy. It feels like it would definitely take some
force to do it, and I'm obviously! not about to try it intentionally, thank
you very much? but! is it more just hife, and just people trying to bash
Apple and make a stink? I know that there are plenty of Youtube videos out
there of people bending the phones purposely to show that it indeed can and
will bend. This said, I have a Pelican protector case. Earlier tonight I
tried taking the thing off temporarily so I could show the bare phone to my
mom, as she'd never seen a 6 of any sort before, let alone, a 6 Plus. This
case is so snugged on the thing that pealing it off the back of the phone
literally! almost takes the jaws of life! NO pun to the screen reader
intended. LOL! I swear when I did take it out, it felt like after trying
to put it back in, I didn't slide it up quite far enough to the top edge of
the case, therefore it was a little crookid. When I took it out again to
reposition it, I swear it felt like it had bent a slight bit. I think I'm
probably just paranoid though. Most likely it didn't bend, and if it did,
it would have been so slight that it eventually seems to a fixed itself.
Again, I know I'm probably having you look at me and go... Doo'ood, Really?I
mean, O? Kayyy. I never said! it couldn't! happen, don't get me wrong, but
do you all agree with what AT&T and Apple both are telling me, that the
people who did! do this, were mistreating the phones badly, whether be
purposely or not?

I heard about one dude who literally apparently bent the thing on quote
unquote, accident, so badly that the thang literally caught fire! So,
yeah... I dunno. I'm probably over-paranoid, and earlier is probably just
all in my head, as I'm working myself up over it for no reason, but I wanted
to confirm with you all. I never really go outside and am travelling a lot.
I never ever put my phones in my back pants pocket, I always keep the thing
up on a counter/table/desk when not using it. I also have a good hard glass
screen protector over the screen, in addition to the case. So, yeah. What
do you all think? Do I need to just calm down, and stop pannicking, or do
you all think I really do! have a reason to be so frightenned of this.

Chris.

I like what the Rolling Stones said about this, “You can’t always get what

Sorry, This probably isn’t helpful either, but I’m in a weird mood this

It is also important to remember when putting the phone into a pocket,
including the shirt pocket, to keep the touch-screen toward your body for
protection.

and that, my fellow listers, is why we aught to be careful about a few
things when we put our new physically bigger, and thinner iDevices in our
sky rockets.

The size of the pocket, as well as it's location is a big factor in whether
or not your phone's going to bend. if you have it in your back pocket
righere the fleshy end of your bum is when you squat on your dot, is most
assuredly after a few hours going to cause the issue you hope to avoid to
manifest itself.

do bare in mind that it does take a good deal of pressure to make these
things bend and personally unless it's entirely accidental, I don't see any
point in testing it, putting the results up on youtube and moaning about it,
unless of course, I'm a silly ass. but, I don't look much like a donkey, and
don't considermyself silly enough to pull off a stunt like that. just be
mindful of where teh phones are located upon your personage when you sit or
put yourself in a position that might cause the thing to bend. that's all.

[Mac-access]: annoying message on IOS regarding WIFI

2015-02-17 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Hi,
My son is using my old iPhone 5, and he turned of data, and is connecting
through our router, and he keeps getting this annoying message telling him
that he is not using data.
Duh!
He is the one who turned it off!
He has to click on okay all the time when it pops up, when he opens up the
browser.
Is there a way to tell IOS to not show that message any more?
Thanks.

Hi!

You’ll possibly want one of these if you have a Macbook Air or - in my
case - a Mac Mini.

I didn’t buy the drive recommended by Apple, Google told me that the Apple
drive lacked some significant features compared to other drives available
such as the model by Samsung which is also a Blu-Ray drive though I’m yet to
work out how one goes about playing Blu-Ray DVD’S on the Mac but all in good
time.

I’ve been ripping Audio CD’S all afternoon using the Samsung drive that came
today and that excellent software XLD, you only have to look at the logs
generated by XLD to see the difference with the new drive compared to the
other software I was using.

Anyway, the Samsung Blu-Ray drive cost around $110 Australian dollars.

Hi All, a very irritating problem I now have is say when I phone my service
provider Vodafone from my iPhone and a recorded message starts saying
something to the effect, we have noticed you are calling from a number
ending 459, please enter the full number, then I have a race against the
clock and between Vodafone recorded message to try and input my 10 or 11
digit number. Often I am too slow so I just get this recorded message
starting over again and it is so difficult to work around. I must add I do
not have any hearing loss but it is difficult discriminating between the
Vodafone voice and music and voice over. How are others coping with this
problem? I believe it is an issue for O2 customers also.

I don't know if iPhones have memory buttons, like the Androids.
With an Android phone, if you long-press a number, it does a memory dial for
you.
Sounds like Sarah's idea will work though.

[Mac-access]: Be My Eyes App

2015-03-28 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Hi,
I was just wondering, from the users of the Be My Eyes app on IOS.
Should one have to put in their eMail and password each time we use it?
For those who have difficulty typing on their device, it makes it useless,
and I'm not fond of typing in my eMail and password each time I use it.
I have worked with others to use it successfully, and they have had to enter
their information each time.
I tried mine today, and it has been so long since I used it, I don't even
remember which eMail account I used on it.
Thanks for any feedback.

Glenn,

You are! aware, are you not, that if you don't like typing your e-mail
address, you can set up a shortcut, so you would type for example, GPEM,
which stands for "Glenn's personal E-mail." Then, once you hit the space
bar, it would expand to your entire e-mail address.

Let me know if you'd like some help setting this up.

Chris.

When you hit the space, does it insert a space too?

OK, let me grab my IPhone so I can talk you through this correctly...

1. Go to Settings.

2. Double tap on General.

3. Double tap on Keyboard.

4. Double tap on Shorttcuts

5. Double tap on add, which is in the top right corner, yes you can flick
to it if needed.

6. Now you're in the phraise field, so simply type in your e-mail address
in completion.

7. Next, double tap in the Shortcut optional field, then type in something
like GPEM or whatever you want to type to expand to your address.

8. Now, upper right corner, double tap on save.

There you go.

Now, to make this work and test it out, put yourself into a text field.
Doesn't matter where, just get focus moved inside one. Now type your
shortcut text. You'll need to then afterward hit the space bar. It won't
expand until you do so.

Chris.

I guess you do!
I remember our talks, but I don't remember names of your family, such as

You and I talked way way way back in the days via phone. It's been quite a
while, but I have a good memory.

Sorry, I was just making a point. Didn't mean to stir up an awquard
feeling. You asked me if I knew, and I said no. that seemed to be the
logical thing to do was get him, or someone else to help you look.

If you're angry at my comment, I'm sorry, dono what to tell ya.

[Mac-access]: putting music folders on iPhone 4

2015-03-31 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Hi,
I have an iPhone 4, latest 7X software.
That is as high as the 4 will go.
I don't like putting my music into it via iTunes because it does not play my
stuff by folder, as I put it in there.
I have DropBox on it, but I can seemingly only play the music from DropBox,
and I need a WIFI or data connection for that.
I wish to listen to the folders when away from WIFI, in other words, I want
the music on the phone, but not in the music player.Other than streaming
from the cloud, how can I do this?
If I paste them in next to the pictures folder via "my computer", is there
an app that will find them?
Thanks.

What about something like Media Connect or oOplayer? Both Apps have free
and paid versions.

Re: [Mac-access]: putting music folders on iPhone 4

2015-03-31 Thread Glenn / Lenny
I was just looking at ooplayer, after you suggested that, and the only thing
that concerns me is whether or not it keeps the music in their folders and
allows me to play a folder.
The media Connect which I also looked up after you suggested it, looks like
it is for streaming only.

You can do it in several different ways, using FTP from your iPhone to a
computer, using Dropbox as your source and so on.

One of the devices I bought specifically for this sort of thing - so I
wouldn't have to bother with putting any files on my iPhone at all - was
something called a SkyShare, a Wi-Fi pocket hard drive, when I want my
music I just connect wirelessly to the SkyShare though I appreciate that
a SkyShare is not everyone's cup of tea.

oOplayer doesn't touch your content that is to say it plays your content
no matter where you put it, so long as you can find it with oOplayer
then you can play it, a bit like say opening Windows Explorer and
selecting files or folders for playing, another tool you might like to
look at is File Browser.

I sometimes wonder if what may give an app a bad rating is from it having
not enough eye candy for the sighted, and as a result, perhaps it works
better for us.

Course! I use it all the time, I never go on a rating though that’s probably
hypercritical of me as I should rate Apps myself I guess.

Another IOS user told me about it so I heard about oOplayer through word of
mouth.

[Mac-access]: EZmp3Player help

2015-04-03 Thread Glenn / Lenny
Hi,
I found an IOS app that promises to be truly easy, but I'm getting stuck.
The pro version is only 2 dollars.
It appears that one can transfer music to their IOS device via a web page,
which is one of your internal IP Addresses, with a colon and four more
digits. It also appears that you can select to play by folder, which is how
I like to play my music.
When I go to the IP Address it offers, the page shows the EZmp3Player page,
but with my screenreader, I cannot find a way to upload from my computer to
the iPhone.
I am using JFW, and I have tried it with I.E., and FireFox.
TIA for any ideas.

Did you read the reviews? 42% 3 stars and below. Lots of people having the
same issue. No solutions described. Did you notice when the app was last
updated? There is lots of criticism of no tech support.

Re: [Mac-access]: Iphone 5 or 4S

2015-04-13 Thread Glenn / Lenny
My son is using the 5 which I gave him, and he is happy with the
performance, and you know how kids are about social stuff and media.
He is sighted though, so there may be a bit of difference in the usage
between VO users and non-VO users.
The camera on an iPhone 5 as 8MP, which is good for OCR and Barcodes, and
the 5S camera is not really any better.
For the price, I'd say go with it, as even if the update did not work, so
what, nothing says you need to upgrade.

Hi there!

I know people who had an iPhone 4S with IOS 8.x and found the
performance terribly sluggish.

I myself have worked with an iPhone 5 with versions of IOS though not
recent versions, think I sold my iPhone 5 when IOS 8.1 was around and it
worked well.

if you're offered the iPhone 5 for 80 pounds then to me that sounds
perfectly reasonable.

I'm now using an iPhone 5S having sold my iPhone, then upgraded to an
iPhone 6 which I didn't like and then downgraded to an iPhone 5S which I
do very much like.

There was one model, either the 5 or the 5S that had a recall on the
battery, because of the poor life.

Jude,
I'm not sure what you mean when you say the battery life on the 5S is not
good. I have a 5S, and my battery last me all day with pretty heavy use.
Also, I have a for S, and the speed of the 5S is noticeably better than that
of the 4s. So, I don't agree with you about them being no better than each
other depending on the memory only. My experience simply does not bear that
out.
I also don't know what you mean when you say that you can't use voiceover
with a Bluetooth keyboard. Of course you can. If you couldn't, how would you
know where you were navigating?

Re: [Mac-Access]: enough!

2015-05-25 Thread Glenn / Lenny
These people wanting to leave the list might feel differently if they knew what
I went through the eyes-free list with with GoogleGroups.
For those who don't know, the eyes-free list is for Android users.
It gets at least 200 messages a day, and it is unmoderated.
My ISP had just switched to using the gMail server when I subscribed, so my
eMail went in as my user name at gMail.com.
Then I tried to unsubscribe and the unsubscribe commands did not recognize me
because my eMails going to the list showed up as from my ISP, @cableone.net
When I complained to the list, someone there was able to set me up so I could
not post to the list, but I was still getting the messages.
For a couple years, I just filtered them to my trash.
Then my ISP came back with providing their own eMail server, and I was put into
IMAP, and my filters no longer worked.
Their web interface was AJAX, rather than standard HTML, by default, which made
it unusable by a Blind user.
So after all that, I feel like the folks complaining here have little to
complain about.

another thing, you try running a list serve when working full-time. I don't see
