Text Extractor

This OCR app for the Mac was and may still be on sale. Does anyone have any
experience with it using VoiceOver? I would like an inexpensive OCR app for
my Mac and hope this one is accessible.

What kind of macs do you both have? I'm not having any issues what so ever.
I have an mbp mid 2009.

The punctuation is not reflexive of what actually happens. I just used it to
create pauses in speech. Now, in Mavericks, that flag doesn't appear, and
Voiceover reads everything except the read/unread status of the message. Is
there a way to reenable that flag?

I'd love to be able to change the date, as I live in Canada but like the
Mac's U.S. date format. If anyone wants to try to play with the date
objects, I'd appreciate knowing the findings. It's pretty safe to do since
resetting the region will reset the format.

Message dates not accurate in Mail

2013-03-09 Thread Marcia Yale
I'm running Mountain Lion's most recent update, and this has always been a
problem for me, and I'm finally at the point where it's no longer
acceptable. The problem is that the dates showing in the messages list for
the individual emails are not correct. In fact, every message claims to have
been delivered on 01-05-12. I have my messages sorted by date, and yet the
date shown is never correct. Has anyone else noticed this problem and is
there a fix?

RE: iTunes organization question

2012-12-31 Thread Marcia Yale
My only concern with taking a chance is that the collection is very
large--each of the 8 folders involved has thousands of songs in it.
Therefore, if it's not going to work, it'll be a real mess. I think I've
decided to create a brand new library for all the stuff and then if it
doesn't organize properly it won't have affected my current library.

There is a feature of Itunes where you can view your library by songs and
then sort by date added. You get to the viewing options by pressing
command-j. Once you are viewing by date added you can import a folder into
your library and see how the tagging worked. In other words, view the
columns of the songs table such as artist, album, album artist, etc. and see
what the meta data is. Then you can do batch editing to clean it up.

This is a way of controlling what goes into your Itunes library before you
have duplicates and other funkiness.

If not all of this makes sense let me know and I can elaborate.

iTunes organization question

2012-12-30 Thread Marcia Yale
A friend of mine gave me a music collection which is currently organized
into folders by song name, although the majority of the files are tagged
with album/artist information as well. I would like to import this mess into
iTunes, but only if it will reorganize the songs into their artist/album
groups. This collection is currently on a separate USB drive, and it's
bigger than my Mac's own hard drive where my library currently resides, so I
don't want to start the whole process if there's no chance the grand
majority of the files will be properly organized. Has anyone tried what I've
set out here and, if so, how successful was it?

RE: Question about pages

2012-12-23 Thread Marcia Yale
Find the file in Finder, press command-I to open the info page, and VO-right
till you hear the "open with" piece. There will be an application
mentioned--MS-Word or whatever your current default is--and if you VO-space
on it you'll be in a menu of applications. Pages should be on the list, so
pick it, and VO-space again. Then VO-right over to the "change all" item and
VO-space on it. You'll be asked to confirm what you requested, and once you
confirm, all .doc files will open with Pages. Hope I've explained myself
clearly enough.

Good evening all:

I received a .doc file by mail but can't open it using pages.

When I try to open it, the inaccessible MS word always appears and I can't
open it with pages.

What can I do to open automatically all the .doc files using pages and not
ms word?

Cheers.

Hi listers,

I can't believe I have not found it but despite my best efforts I
can't seem to find where I set the system voice.

Somewhere along the way I set it to a voice that I now need to
change. I've looked in system preferences under sound and under speech and
have not found it.

I'm especially noticing it in Skype where I have many things spoken. but
I'm pretty sure Skype is just using my system voice.

I feel rather silly that I couldn't find it.

"Re-buffering stream" too often happening with iTunes

2012-05-21 Thread Marcia Yale
I'm running Lion's latest release on a Macbook Air. I'm hoping someone has a
suggestion as to why I get the above message more and more often lately when
listening to an internet radio stream from iTunes. If I had my Mac and my
Windows machine side by side, the Windows machine, using Winamp, would have
a constant media stream whereas the Mac would be constantly interrupted by
the "rebuffering' activity. Both machines are connected to the internet
wirelessly, so I doubt that is the reason, but it's becoming a real
frustration.

On a related note, I find that Safari will cut out on a stream more often
than I.E. on Windows. I don't really understand what the User Agent option
really does on the Developer menu, though I have tried that in hopes I can
make the streaming less choppy.

Any assistance with both of these issues would be appreciated as I love my
Mac but am really getting frustrated at the unreliability of media
streaming. If you need more explanation, please let me know.

Question about possibility of backing up Windows and Mac on one external drive

2012-03-12 Thread Marcia Yale
The subject says it all--I'm still both a Windows and a Mac user, with one
laptop on each operating system, and I also have an external drive with
about 200 gigs of files which I can connect to either machine and which,
along with the two laptops, I would like to back up. I am trying to decide
whether to purchase one or more than one new external drives to use for
backing up the whole lot, and would like to know whether there is a way to
use one external drive to back up files from all three devices--the two
laptops and the other external drive. Is this even a good idea? All thoughts

Time Capsule or external USB-connected hard drive?

2011-11-25 Thread Marcia Yale
The 2-TB Time Capsule is on sale today--well, $20 or so off, which isn't a
lot, but I've been wondering about this device for a while. What advantages,
if any, does it have over a run-of-the-mill external hard drive? I'm
thinking of using it for backing up my Mac and, if at all possible, my
Windows-based PC as well. I don't have any experience partitioning a drive,
so I'm not sure if it is easy to create two such partitions on either.
Apologies for the convoluted message. Any comments welcome!

Hi list:

I am trying to use hot spot with voice over. I am having trouble. I set it

not move me to the window as I was told it would.

I hit control option shift and number to set it up. then hit option control
and that number after I leave that program and it does nothing. I hit the
keystroke twice to see the hotspots I have set up and they say inactive.

I put or monitor them also and they do not work.

What am I doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

I do not understand what I can be doing wrong. I am setting it up right for
it shows up but why is it not launching that program I set it up in?

Hi Margaret,

As Gordon mentioned, Mike Arrigo is a member of this list, but I can post a
list of the other 13 Mac podcasts that he has done for Blind Cool Tech in
addition to the more recent 14th podcast on Lion that Chris Hallsworth
posted about. I don't have the individual links, since all of my versions
were obtained through podcast subscription. They are available at the Blind
Cool Tech web site:
http://www.blindcooltech.com/

These are the descriptions with date and episode title from the BCT feed:

Mac Accessibility Demo
5/24/2008 Mike overviews the accessibility features in the Mac and
demonstrates web browsing, email, and word processing. 28.6 MB

Mac Accessibility Demo Part 2
6/12/2008 Mike Arrigo continues the tour of the accessibility of the Mac
using the built-in screen reader, Voice Over. Mike demonstrates streaming
audio and using the Voice Over web find feature. 23.9 MB

Mac Demo Part 3
8/12/2008 Mike Arrigo answers questions from the first two episodes in this
series about the Mac and Voice Over, its built in screen reader. He explains
how to boot from the system DVD, shows a slick technique for moving through
mail messages more quickly, and tours the Voice Over Control Panel to show
the customizations you may make. He also demonstrates using the web browser
on the internet and demonstrates how it works with Ebay. 22.0 MB

Mac Demo 4
12/16/2008 Mike Arrigo continues this series by answering questions, showing
the improved accessibility in iTunes 8, playing a DVD, and using the web
with dynamic web pages. 22.8 MB

Mac Demo 5
1/18/2009 Mike Arrigo continues this series about built-in accessibility on
the Mac by demonstrating running Windows on the Mac. He discusses the
reasons why you would want to run Windows on a Mac, then talks about how it
works, runs both the Mac operating system and Windows at the same time, and
shows running Window-eyes, System Access, and Kurzweil 1000. 17.8 MB

Mac Demo 6
2/9/2009 Mike Arrigo describes how to walk up to a Mac in the store and get
it talking, so you can try it there. He also demonstrates using Voice Over
on the numeric keypad and shows how to copy files. He copies a book to an SD
card for use on the Victor Reader Stream. 18.1 MB

Mac Demo 7
3/17/2009 Mike Arrigo looks at the software update feature on the mac, goes
through most of the system preferences, and mentions things that blind users
may want to change. He shows how to enable the option so you can see file
extensions, shows how to change what programs are used to open different
types of files, and demonstrates how to install programs on the mac. 24.5 MB

Mac Demo 8
6/16/2009 Mike Arrigo offers another perspective than that presented in the
June issue of The Monitor about the useability of the Macintosh with its
built-in screen reading software, VoiceOver. 29.3 M

Mac Demo 9
7/24/2009 Mike Arrigo shows how Voice Over on the Mac interacts with three
commercially available programs that were not written by Apple to emphasize
the universal access to a wide variety of applications. 18.4 MB

Install Snow Leopard
9/1/2009 Mike Arrigo independently installs the Snow Leopard operating
system using Voice Over, the Mac's built-in screen reader and discusses some
of its enhancements. 21.4 MB

New Features In VoiceOver
9/6/2009 Mike Arrigo discusses the new features in VoiceOver with the
release of Snow Leopard. 21.7 MB

Mac Podcast 12
11/30/2009 Mike Arrigo shares some news tidbits, more 3rd party applications
for backup and maintenance, a media player, a bible program, and how to
tether a Symbian phone to use the cell data plan for your Mac internet
connection. 22.9 MB

Mac Demo 13
6/8/2010 Mike Arrigo describes the new Mac Book and demonstrates some of the
gestures using the track pad. He also demonstrates iWorks' and Open Office's
word processor and spreadsheet applications. 18.9 MB

Mac Demo 14
9/9/2011 Mike Arrigo continues this informative series with a detailed
discussion on Version 10.7, Lion, of the Mac operating system. 29.6 MB

Apple Help and Exporting Mailboxes

2011-09-27 Thread Marcia Yale
I'm trying again, as I have no idea if this message reached the list the
first time. I still have the question below:
I have tried to find information in Help regarding Exporting Mailboxes. I
seem to have exported a mailbox--I chose the menu item and don't remember
landing on a dialog--it seemed to just do something and go away. Now I want
to find where the mailbox might have gone, and I can't seem to find a
specific help category. I also can't seem to do a text search in the help
system. Can someone please help? I think I could get to like the mail
program if only I can get by these small irritants!

ITunes help

2011-09-22 Thread Marcia Yale
I am looking for a decent tutorial or guide to using ITunes with VoiceOver
as the Mac 101 tutorial just didn't cut it. I am having difficulty getting
my head around how it is organized and how to find music and keep it
organized and also how to make sure radio stations I link to will stay in
ITunes so I don't have to go searching for them again. I guess what I am
trying to say is that I would really like an actual manual which explains
the software and how to use it! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am not sure how much can still be done with mobile me, since it is being
replaced by the iCloud service. Also, since I am not yet using Lion, I am
not sure if the how the preferences have changed in the new mail program.
However, if all of your e-mail coming into the computer is using IMAP< then
you do not really need to worry about losing messages if you delete the
account on your macintosh and then add it back in.

Resetting Mail Defaults and MobileMe setup issue

2011-09-08 Thread Marcia Yale
Is there a way to reset the defaults in Mail? I had a bit of trouble
figuring out the server tables when I was setting up my email account and I
managed to mess up the MobileMe outgoing server. It seems that, no matter
what I do, I can't seem to correct the problem. I would prefer not to have
to delete my whole account as I don't want to lose the items that have
arrived in my inbox there, but I found the export function so I may just do
that if it would help resolve the MobileMe mess! Any suggestions?

Also, I haven't been able to set MobileMe up, either--do I need an Apple Id
first?

RE: New user, accidentally turned speech off

2011-09-08 Thread Marcia Yale
Actually, I accidentally solved my own problem by trying the
VO-Command-right-arrow and as soon as I started the cycle and it hit the
voice option for Alex, Alex was back! Hopefully I'll be able to solve most
of the problems I create for myself in the future as easily but quicker,
before I send frantic messages for help everywhere!

Hi Marcia,

If you turned speech off rather than VoiceOver (i.e., you can't use
Command+F5 to toggle VoiceOver back on), then you may either have turned the
speech volume way down, or muted your audio by pressing the F10 key. (It
might be Fn+F10, depending on how you have set up your keyboard
preferences). If the volume is all the way down, you can get control of
your pitch, intonation, rate, and volume with VO-Command+arrow keys, where
you cycle through the option settings with Control+Option+Command+Right or
Left arrow, and adjust the values with VO-Command-Up or Down arrow. It you
muted all you audio by mistake, pressing either the F12 key (or Fn+F12,
depending on your setup), will take the volume back up.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

New user, accidentally turned speech off

2011-09-08 Thread Marcia Yale
I am a new user of a brand new MacBook Air and I was setting up my VoiceOver
preferences and managed to turn speech off! I know I never consciously
turned on the trackpad commander, so I am unable to restart speech using
that method. Is there a key combination that will fix my trouble, or
somewhere that I can read and follow directions to get back into that part
of the utility to fix it?
