Re: bluez and pause control

2014-05-10 Thread ROBERT CARTER
Hi,

If you are using any bluetooth headset to listen to Audible, pause only works
if you are playing the Audible book at normal speed. If you speed up the book,
this breaks the pause function.

When I reported this to Audible, they did some testing and said that it was
Apple’s problem.

Hi,

On the Mac version, open the website in safari where you want the password to
apply. Click 1password in the safari toolbar. This will bring up 1password
mini. Once you have entered your master password, interact with the first table
and down arrow to the third row which is the password generator. It will
automatically generate a password. You can either choose fill or copy and have
the password filled in on the site or have it copied to the clipboard.

I don't understand though, what does a monitor being connected have to do
with the computer doing its job? I mean, I know it's a perifferal device
(one that can be plugged in), but it isn't essential. Does it really speed
the computer up and make it stop saying busy so much?
Anyway, going back to the topic, I don't have a monitor plugged in right now,
but still, pretty much all my other settings are saving.

Re: Problems eptying trash

2013-01-23 Thread ROBERT CARTER
Hi Chris,

If you really want to empty the trash, and don't care about any of the files,
from the finder, press command+option+shift+delete. This should go ahead and
completely empty the trash without any prompting.

 Good afternoon all.
I am having a problem eptying the trash. This has been happening for a while
now. Here is what I do.
 1. I press command-shift-delete in the Finder.
 2. I am asked if I want to securely erase the trash. This is my personal
preference so I let it go ahead.
 3. I then get a window with the buttons remove unlocked files and remove all.
 4. I click remove unlocked files.
 5. It goes ahead and empties it for a while, but then I'm taken back to the
Finder. The same is true if I have clicked remove all.
But what concerns me is the window I described above, plus I have about
13,000 files in the trash, which just won't go away.
Should I consider booting to the recovery partition, erasing the Macintosh Hd
volume, then reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch?
This is on a 2012 Macbook Pro 13 inch without Retina Display.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 Chris.

I am excited about the latest Tech Doctor podcast entitled Apple Accessibility
From the Early Days to Now with Darcy Burnard.

Darcy and his partner Holly have been teaching us about VoiceOver since 2006
when they started their Screenless Switchers podcast.

In addition to talking about the early days, Darcy and the Tech Doctor discuss
how to go about selecting, customizing and purchasing the current line of Apple
laptops. They discuss the new iPads and speculate a bit about the future of iOS.

The Tech Doctor podcast is available in iTunes, on iBlink radio and at

Re: Audio Editors

2012-09-23 Thread Robert Carter
Hi Lynne and list,

I did a brief demo of editing with Sound Studio as a podcast. It is on my site
which is
http://www.dr-carter.com
In short, to use VoiceOver with Sound Studio, you need to turn cursor tracking
off. The spacebar will start the file playing and the comma will pause the file
at the current playback position. The letter m will place a marker at the
playback position. The option+left and right arrows will move backward or
forward between markers. When you add the shift key, this will select the audio
between marks. Finally, the number 1 key will scrub backward and the number 2
will scrub forward through the file.

You need to be running the latest version of Sound Studio.

Now I have a question for you, where do you get wave pad?

Thanks,

Robert Carter

 Hello Robert

You say you are using Sound Studio to edit your podcasts. OK; how do you
actually manipulate your sound file? We use Sound Studio as a recorder but
editing with VoiceOver has always been problematic. I have always done the
editing as it has been easier to do that visually.

But I'd be interested to know what you did to enable cursor control so that
 you can edit using VoiceOver.

just use it as a recorder and use WavePad to edit the resulting data.
WavePad is just so much more accessible, intuitive and responsive.

Re: A Dilemma

2012-08-29 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

If you are happy with the capabilities of the 4s today, it will likely retain
those capabilities for the next two years. If, however, you think that you
would really like to be able to take advantage of whatever capabilities the new
phone might have that the 4s doesn't have, you should wait.

My wife, for example, could care less about the new phone. She just wants a 4s
so that she can have siri. I, on the other hand, am an early adopter and get
really excited about being able to play with the latest and greatest. You just
have to figure out what kind of personality you have and make your choice based

Re: Dropbox install process not working

2012-08-11 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

Last week, I installed Mountain Lion and reinstalled DropBox by going to the
http://www.dropbox.com
site and downloading the latest version of dropbox for the Mac. This is version
1.4.12. When this dmg is extracted, you now have a DropBox.app that you simply
copy in to the applications folder and open with command+o. When I did this, I
was prompted for my Username and password and all installed perfectly.

I stopped the Dropbox process in Activity Monitor. I deleted the app

Re: Migration Assistant from windowsXP to Mac

2012-08-05 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

I don't know how big your iTunes library is, but you can simply copy the entire
iTunes folder in to the music folder on the mac and iTunes will work with it.
Just realize that if you do this, you will be replacing any iTunes library that
was already on the Mac.

the passcode and waiting for PC to respond.

I've tried disabling XP firewall, and also disabling
MicrosoftSecurityEssentials system monitoring, but no joy.

Any experience with this process? I'd like to transfer my iTunes library
primarily - is there another way?

New Tech Doctor Podcast

2012-04-29 Thread Robert Carter
Hi All,

There is a brand new Tech Doctor podcast at
http://www.dr-carter.com

Here are the show notes.

During this hour, Robert has a fascinating conversation with, Jolie Mason, the
founder and program director of the Los Angeles Radio Reading Service. The LA
Reading Service can be heard world wide on an iOS app called
a href=http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iblink-radio/id332027117?mt=8;iBlink
Radio/a
In addition to her radio reading service work, Jolie hosts a radio show on a
Los Angeles radio station
a href=http://www.kpfk.org;KPFK/a
The show is called Access Unlimited and can be heard online by going to the
KPFK site.

Jolie is an enthusiastic iPhone user but did express some frustration with the
fact that VoiceOver users are required to use different gestures than those
that are used by sighted iPhone users. Robert mentions a new book that teaches
iPhone VoiceOver users everything they need to know. The book is available from
the National Braille Press and is called
a href=http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/IPHONE-IOS5.html;Getting Started with the
IPhone and iOS 5 for Blind Users/a

Jolie and Robert discuss an excellent website filled with information about
Apple accessibility. The site is called
a href=http://www.applevis.com;Applevis/a

There is a new iOS, Android and PC app that allows people to voice chat with
other users of the app throughout the world. It has become very popular with
blind people. The app is called
a href=http://www.zello.com;Zello/a
One thing that can quickly become a problem is finding a particular app on your
iPhone. This problem occurs once you have dozens of apps. Jolie describes her
excellent system for organizing and categorizing all of her apps.

Finally, Jolie and Robert discuss some of their favorite apps for learning
about birds and for using the iPhone in the kitchen. Here are the links to some
really great birding apps.

Re: TC-Conferencing software.

2012-03-30 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

Getting the TC conference mac software installed will probably require some
sighted assistance. When the program first installs, a java dialog comes up
that is not accessible to VoiceOver. Once the button to install has been
clicked, the installation will proceed.

Assuming that the software is installed, do the following.

1. open safari and press vo+space on the enter this room link.
2. After a few seconds, VoiceOver will report that TC conference is running.
3. Press vo+d to go to the dock.

4. type tc to put focus on the tc conference application and press enter to
open it.
5. Press vo+f2+f2 to open the window chooser menu.
6. use the down arrow key to go to the login window and press enter.
7. When in the login window, type the name that you will use while in the room
and press the login button with vo+space.

Hi Justin,

Pressing the two middle thumb keys will issue the home command on the apex.

iTunes home sharing and copying songs

2011-12-03 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

When using iTunes home sharing, how does one use VoiceOver to copy a song in to
a library that is being shared? I can see the desired library but the copy and
paste commands don't seem to be actually placing the song in that library.

Thanks,

Robert Carter

Hi Justin,

Another thing that you can try is using the passthrough key followed by the
chord-h. The passthrough key is dots 4-5-6-Enter.
