Re: DAISY Reader for the Mac?

2011-09-23 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Mike

Not Lynne this time, but Gordon.

Lynne and I use ReadHear quite a lot at night when we want to listen to
something a little different and are not in the mood for music. The app is
really good, although as I think Lynne said, a little on the expensive side.
You have to activate it on their server on a per-machine basis. But you can
easily deactivate it and run it on another machine under the same license if
you wish. That's a good thing, because it makes it portable. I think it's
perfectly fair given their definition of a single user license.

Most companies define singe user much more loosely. They don't use activation
technologies, of course. But that's just the way it is I guess. We try to
respect licensing specifications when we buy something. And GH is no
different. But I do wish their prices were a little more reasonable.

They are based in Indiana, only about 60 miles from where I grew up in

There are two solutions I know of: 1. Oleria which is a free reader. 2. GH
Accessibility's "ReadHear" which is somewhat more expensive but it's also got
more features.

The former doesn't supports library or anything flash; but it plays your files.
The second one supports full library functions and is also more proactive to
the user. We personally use ReadHear; but it isn't to everybody's needs or
liking.

Just do a google for them and I'm sure you'll find them. If not let us know.

Onh hang on, I think ReadHear is at http://www.gh-accessibility.com but I can't
off hand remember the URL for Oleria.

Re: DAISY Reader for the Mac?

2011-09-22 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi James,

Thank you very much for responding so quickly. I was gratified to know that
there was something available for the Mac.

The software that you pointed me to looks ultimately promising, but it is still
in Beta, and I immediately encountered problems that probably won't occur in
final releases. When I tried to read a newspaper in DAISY format which I had
downloaded from Bookshare, I was told that my audio file could not be read. I
will spend more time on the Olearia web page to learn more about the software.
Furthermore, I will report this bug.

I believe that it will be well worthwhile to send the developers feedback since
we really do need a piece of software that allows us to read DAISY texts on our
desktop computers.

Thanks again,

Mike

Hi Mike,

There is Olearia from The Curtain University. I do not think there is a version
specifically for OS X 10.7, but as other apps I use have not been specifically
designed for 10.7 and seem to work fine, I see no reason why Olearia shouldn't.

Get it here: http://www.cucat.org/projects/olearia/

DAISY Reader for the Mac?

2011-09-22 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,

I frequently need to read material that is in the DAISY format. The way I do
it now is to download the material to my Mac and then transfer it to my Victor
Reader Stream. While this solution works, it isn't always the most convenient.
Does anyone know of a program that will let a person read books and articles
in the DAISY format on the Mac? I know that apps are available for iPhones,
but I would really like something for the Mac. In case there is any confusion,
I am not referring to audio files with the DAISY mark-up.

Thank you,

Mike
