Video adapter for the Mac Mini Question.
Hi Folks: I've got the necessary components to run my Mac Mini without a monitor. My question is, is there anything particular that I need to do with the VGA to NTSC converter or does it just work out of the box? I did plug it in to a USB port on the mac as well as connected it to a mini display port VGA adaptor. Re: Video adapter for the Mac Mini Question.
Hi Jim, You might want to wait to hear from John Panarese, or some other Mac Mini owner who uses the adapter combination in place of a monitor, but my understanding is that as long as the VGA to NTSC converter from Sewell Direct is plugged into the VGA end of the Apple mini display port VGA adapter, this should work as though you had connected your Mini to a monitor that is turned off. I think the Mini tries to detect whether a monitor is present when it starts up, so you might need to have this adapter combination in place when you start up your Mini. HTH. Re: Mac Mini question.
Jim I think you'll need some sort of display connected to the Mini in order to use it. If it's the same as the 2009/2010 models, they made it so that it wouldn't work properly without a monitor. Re: Mac Mini question.
In my opinion, it's just plain weird for a server to require the presence of a monitor. Many servers sit alone in a closet and have zero use for a display. And, I am talking about sighted users. Kevin At 09:31 AM 7/27/2011, you wrote: HiJim I used to have one that a friend made for me. But it stopped working on the 2010 models I tried. Ours are server models and they seem to sometimes work alright without the display but not always. The primary server is a 2009 MacBook, (late 2009) and it definitely requires a display. The mid 2010 versions seem to need it but not always. My advice to you to be utterly honest would be stick with what you have unless you have a compelling reason to switch. You'll lose a lot of the advantages of the MacBook series and other than additional ports I can't see why you'd want to switch to the Mini being totally honest. The Mini is not designed for portability. It is marketed as a desktop computer. That's why it is logical that it needs a monitor. The server model uses the Intel on dye video card; as does the entry level mini. Only the mid level one has a discrete graphics processor.
