New to list and seeking some guidance on the new Mac book air I have just purchased

2014-04-27 Thread Mark

Hello, I am new to this list. It was recommended to me by, someone on an iOS
blind listserv. I have just taken the plunge, and moving from a PC computer, to
the Mac book air. I have taken the tutorial on voice over. It explained some of
the key commands that would be very helpful.

I am finding that my first frustration, or challenge, is to navigate the web.
Using Safari, and using the limited voiceover commands that I learned in the
tutorial, has proven not very helpful. I have a tendency, to not know where I
am navigating too, how to get out of a window, close the window, go back where
I was, or simply delete something.

I realize there is a lot to learn. And one email, is not going to solve all of
my challenges. So, could people reply with what they feel, would be the top
four or five key commands I should know to navigate in a web environment. Using
Safari. Or recommendations for other web browsers? It will be a wonderful
place, to start. Thank you

Mark

Hi Mark and welcome aboard. I am rather new to the Mac too. I just got my Mac
Book Air after Christmas, and love it. To open a website in Safari, press
Command L and then type in the URL. When Safari is first launched though you
will automatically be placed in the address bar. To exit a website hit Command
W, and to close out of Safari altogether Command Q. AppleVis is probably where
you want to look first for training. Go to www.applevis.com . I’ve also found
Google Chrome to be a great browser, and Chromevox is very good. Google Chrome
works almost the same as Safari. Hth.

Jake, thanks for the suggestions. I will try them. Do you mind if I ask more
questions later? There seems to be well, much to learn. :-)

Also, you can explore the Air’s keyboard with a VO k combination. The key on
the bottom row left is the function key. The key to the right of that is the
control key. The key to the right of that is the option key. Pressing control
and option keys together make up the “Vo” keys.

Re: New to list and seeking some guidance on the new Mac book air I have just purchased

2014-04-27 Thread Phil Halton
Your greatest friend for some time will be the VoiceOver help menu, accessed by
pressing Control-Option H. Keyboard help is similar to keyboard help mode in
JAWS on the PC, and the Quick start guide at the bottom of the help menu is the
VoiceOver users manual. The users manual is an HTML system that you read in
Safari, so it’ll help you get used to working in Safari just by reading the
excellent manual.
I strongly suggest you read it thoroughly, then read it again… and again… until
you feel like you know VoiceOver inside and out. It’s your screen reader, so it
makes sense to get to know all its features as soon as possible.

Good luck and happy reading.
