Re: Google Chrome on the Mac

2014-03-19 Thread Sarah k Alawami
I'll say this much, chrome has come a long way since 2011 when it first came
out for the mac. See my youtube vid google chrome has lost its shine. for more
info. It is now very much accessible and google are working hard to make it
even better. I use it on troublesome sites that for some reason don't work at
all with safari, or work better with chrome.

take care.

Re: Google Chrome on the Mac

2014-03-19 Thread JAKE JOEHL
I actually like both, and don’t have a personal preference at this point. But
then again maybe I will prefer one over the other as time goes by. I’m going
to install ChromeVox on my Mac using the instructions provided earlier, and see
what I think of it. But I can tell you for certain that my sighted life-skills
tutor prefers Chrome over Safari any day. I guess one thing that I find a bit
interesting is that some links work just by hitting Enter, while for others
Enter doesn’t work and I have to hit VO Spacebar. One example of this is when
checking my work email and going through the Spam folder, Enter does not work
for opening that folder but it does work otherwise. My work email account is a
subdomain of Gmail. But perhaps that is just a VoiceOver thing, one which I
haven’t quite gotten used to. This applies to both browsers.

The links don't show in Safari. There is supposed to be a lind after each name
on a particular page, for example. Safaru simply doesn't see them.

Re: Google Chrome on the Mac

2014-03-19 Thread Kristeen Hughes
There are certain links that it does not show. I know they're there and with a
Windows machine people see them. VO crashes a lot with Item chooser and
sometimes just because. If I use the back button, it takes me to an entirely
different area. It makes a site I'm using a lot right now almost unmanageable.
I don't know if I have a configuration that should be changed or what, but
there is some of it.

I would second Sarah’s suggestion of installing the ChromeVox extension. If you
visit www.chromevox.com you will find a link to install the extension, a guide
to the chromevox keyboard shortcuts, and a nice interactive tutorial to help
you get up and running quickly with ChromeVox.

Re: Google Chrome

2014-02-21 Thread Sean Murphy
It works far better then Safari from my point of view. Table navigation
actually works while in voice-over with Safari you have issues when you move up
a table from bottom to top in a column.

You can easily search on the web page by increments. Safari doesn’t give you
this. Selecting text is easy as well.

The app is free and seems accessible when I last tried it. I prefer
Safari though for some reason particularly the ticks when a page is loading.

Just installed it and I've been playing for the last half an hour, its nice and
fast I have to admit though I'm going to have to play a little more and work
out the subtle things like selecting items in list boxes and so on.

I am running Google Chrome on my Mac Book Air. It seems to work great, although
I’ve never actually used it with Chromevox. I assume this is the latest build
but I’m not positive. I use Chrome and Safari interchangeably and like both.
They both work very well with Voiceover.

Subject: Google Chrome app

Hi,
I bought a couple of Google Chrome devices for family members, for Xmas,
for

35 dollars each at Amazon.
There is a free Google Chrome app for the IOS devices, on the app store,
called Google Chrome, and I am pleased to report that the device is at
least
indirectly usable by a Blind person using VoiceOver from their IOS
device.
There are two parts of setting it up, one is plugging it into your TV
and

then connecting to your router.
This part is not doable by a Blind person, because TVs don't yet have
screenreaders.
The other part is to open the Google Chrome app on your IOS device, and
you
will find the Google Chrome device if you are connected to the same
router

it is connected to.
A funny thing about this is, if someone is watching a program, you can
change what they are watching from your device.
You can watch content from your device, like videos and YouTube content,
and

NetFlix and other similar content.
Since I don't have an Apple TV device, I cannot compare the two except
to

say that I suspect that a person using VoiceOver can probably set it up
completely, where connecting the device to the router is not possible
since
it has no speakers, and no touch-screen and I don't think there would be
a

way to run TalkBack on it.

Anyway, I hope some find this useful.
Glenn

Subject: Google Chrome app

Hi,
I bought a couple of Google Chrome devices for family members, for Xmas,
for

35 dollars each at Amazon.
There is a free Google Chrome app for the IOS devices, on the app store,
called Google Chrome, and I am pleased to report that the device is at
least

indirectly usable by a Blind person using VoiceOver from their IOS device.
There are two parts of setting it up, one is plugging it into your TV and
then connecting to your router.
This part is not doable by a Blind person, because TVs don't yet have
screenreaders.
The other part is to open the Google Chrome app on your IOS device, and
you

will find the Google Chrome device if you are connected to the same router
it is connected to.
A funny thing about this is, if someone is watching a program, you can
change what they are watching from your device.
You can watch content from your device, like videos and YouTube content,
and

NetFlix and other similar content.
Since I don't have an Apple TV device, I cannot compare the two except to
say that I suspect that a person using VoiceOver can probably set it up
completely, where connecting the device to the router is not possible
since

it has no speakers, and no touch-screen and I don't think there would be a
way to run TalkBack on it.

Anyway, I hope some find this useful.
Glenn

Re: google chrome, how do I get rid of this dumb thing?

2012-09-09 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello James

Just wanted to say "Good Call" on this one, since you correctly used the upper
case "L" on the string "~/Library/". However, you did miss the closing quote.
;-)

Just joking James. As I said it was a good call. Most people forget that some
systems, (ours, for example), are case sensitive as has always been the case
with Linux/Unix systems I believe. We use case sensitive file systems because
it allows us much more flexibility. It can, at times, cause problems though
under OS X.

Getting back to Cait's problem though, it brings me back to another subject
close to my heart, backups. I honestly believe that if possible, it is always
wise to create a full system backup before a major installation such as Chrome
is performed. We personally have never performed that specific installation,
although we have been tempted too given the number of websites which still do
not support Safari 6.

Something which does not impact on my own personal use, but which does on
Gordon's and, I would assume, every other VoiceOver users as well, is the
verbalisation of icons mapped to links or even just text. So, you'll hear
something like "Link, Icon_1_Home.gif" followed by another occurrence of "Link,
Home". Sometimes there are two links, sometimes not; depends very much on the
website. I have often wondered whether that happens in other browsers using
VoiceOver.

Anyway, I am drifting off topic. Good call regarding the instructions you gave
to Cait. I encourage backups be made using apps such as the recently and
extensively discussed "Carbon Copy Cloner" and "Super Duper!". They would save
a great deal of headache I'm sure.

2012-09-08 Thread Cait Furness
James, *thank you, thank you, thank you*!

I'd already remembered in my foggy brain about the go menu and the hidden
library by the time I'd written my message to the list and purged the dumb
files from the support folder, but completely forgot about the preferences
folder, so naturally the dumb chrome app came back from the dead as soon as I
clicked on a link again in mail even though I rebooted and emptied the trash!
I'll have another go round and see what happenes this time!

Hi,
Ok, in a moment of weakness, I stupidly downloaded google chrome and installed
it on my mac. Now, I want to uninstall it completely off my system as there
are things I don't like about it after all. I already went to my applications
folder and binned the app, but for some reason, my mac still thinks it's
residing someplace on the system and tries to open links in it every time I
click on a link from mail. What's more, if I do click on a link from within

this thing, since I uninstalled it from the apps folder and then emptied my

Is there some hidden place I can purge some dastardly files from, please?

Thanks!

Yes, I use Blakcbaord all of the time. I was unable to use it with
Safari/Voiceover, but have been able to without any problems at all with Chrome
web browser and ChromeVox extension from Chrome Web Store. It works flawlessly
with all of Blackboard, including discussion board. In college setting, I can
have Blackbaord as CMS, CourseSmart as eTextbook, and Docs for productivity
suite, and for it to be fully accessible and a great experience. I absolutely
enjoy it and appreciate that Google has made this possible across multiple
platforms with a unified experience.

Re: Google chrome

2011-10-03 Thread Paul Hopewell
HI Kevin,
Many thanks for the attached references to helpful documents on how to use
Google docs.

I finally found some good help and a tutorial on how to use ChromeVox. At first
I did not realise that it is a complete screen reader for the Google Chrome
environment and that you first have to turn VoiceOver off to avoid confusion.
There are a vast number of good shortcut keys to control ChromeVox but one
problem I have not yet solved is the need to keep the ChromeVox keys
Control+Option keys pressed while you tap in turn the two or more keys required
to enter the required ChromeVox keyboard shortcut. I noticed that there is a
sticky key feature which suggested that a double tap of the Insert key would
lock the ChromeVox keys on. However I am not sure which Insert key and I have
not gotten this to work.
Have you solved this problem?
Many thanks.

Re: Google chrome

2011-10-03 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello Kevin or anyone else,

I haven't been following the Google accessibility threads at all because I
didn't figure I would need to use any of the Google apps. However, I heard
that the Google browser worked with BlackBoard, and if this is true, this is
very important for me. Could someone please tell me what I need to download in
order for the Google apps to work on my Mac Book running Lion? As far as
BlackBoard is concerned, can anyone tell me if it is possible with the Google
browser to reliably work with the discussion boards for individual university
classes?

Thank you,

Mike

Re: Google Chrome, ChromeVox, and Apps

2011-09-28 Thread Kevin Chao
As a college student and  an employee where professors, students, and
co-workers are all using Google Docs. It's extremely exciting,
empowering, and equalizing that I am able to use it as well with a
consistent and unified experience on Mac OS X and other platforms. For
me, Mac OS X with the various productivity/office suite and web
browser have not allowed me to be productive, such as iWork (also
tried Open Office, Libra Office, Bean, and Tables)  and Safari (also
tried Webkit and Lightning) have not allowed me to be productive.
However, Google has changed all of this. With Chrome, ChromeVox, Docs,
and other Google Apps; I am able to be productive on my Mac.

Voiceover will work with Chrome, but the very same issues that occurs
with Safari will exist, such as focus lost, inability to interact with
HTML content, web rotor/item chooser missing elements/items, lag, TAB
key being inconsistent, moving among various HTML elements will
require several attempts, and many other issues.

ChromeVox is an extension that has very deep integration with Chrome,
removes several layers of abstractions, and allows for things to be
done that traditional desktop screen readers cannot due to it being a
web browser extension. All the issues I detailed with Safari/VoiceOver
do not exist in Chrome/ChromeVox.

many people can work on a document simultaneously, and all of this is
possible with Docs, is accessible, and it's
possible to use other real-time features, such as chat to discuss
various points with others who you are collaborating with, several can
make changes, and it's possible to review/edit all these changes as
they're occurring. Inserting, viewing, and editing comments are also
accessible. All of this and much more with Docs applies to documents
and spreadsheets.

It's a work in progress, with Google being very interested in
feedback/input, great open communication, and will soon have updates
addressing lots of areas, which includes new features, bug fixes, and
other items, which are based on feedback. Essentially, a great web
browser and access to standard/new versions of Docs, Calendar, and
Gmail are the great highlights.
