Re: Windows Fusion questions

2013-01-26 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Jamire

To avoid repeatedly discussing the same topics on list, could I suggest that
you might like to view the list archives which contain extensive discussion
related to VMWare Fusion. Fusion is a popular virtualisation application which
allows you to run virtual machines within Mac OS X and, therefore, multiple
simultaneous operating systems. There are, and probably will be for the medium
term at least, several accessibility issues which can mostly be worked around.
Indeed, if one is prepared not to be able to customise the user interface of a
pre-installed operating system, Parallels Desktop can actually be used by a
blind or visually impaired person. Anyway, as I said, there is repeated
discussion on the list archives so you might like to go there and do a search
for the term Fusion which will undoubtedly produce a lot of information for
you.

Oh, and for the record once again and for everybody's reference, it is against
list policy to discuss the configuration of Windows within your virtual
machines. Discuss the virtual machines's configuration itself, but not the
guest operating systems unless, of course, the guest operating system happens
to be another instance of Mac OS X which, of course, changes the entire ball
gam.

Thank you for your tolerance.

Lynne

I hope this helps.

fusion is easy to set up. Either purchase the dvd from a retailer or
download the file from their site and install it onto your mac and follow
the prompts. You can then install the other OS independently as a blind
person, which is beyond all coolness imho! Everything is accessible on
the mac side, but once you're into the other OS, it's business as usual.

2013-01-23 Thread cait furness
I'm not sure if fusion does slow things down or not, but I have 8 megs of ram
in mine, so this is definitely *not* a problem here. I also don't tend to do a
lot of intensive things at the same time. Also, I have an I Mac and not a
laptop, which might make a difference, but I'm not sure about that especially
since the newer MacBooks are pretty powerful now.

Re: Windows Fusion questions

2013-01-22 Thread cait furness
Fusion is a program which lets you run a copy of windows on your mac as a
virtual machine. I think it costs around $50, well, $49.95 for the latest
version. I also think they have a trial version which you can try out for 30
days for free. You can go to www.vmware.com and take a look, but be warned, I
personally hate their web site and think it's a bear to navigate! On the other
hand, I love using fusion on my mac and this is what I use for my windows needs
on my mac.

fusion is easy to set up. Either purchase the dvd from a retailer or
download the file from their site and install it onto your mac and follow
the prompts. You can then install the other OS independently as a blind
person, which is beyond all coolness imho! Everything is accessible on the
mac side, but once you're into the other OS, it's business as usual.

Re: Windows Fusion questions

2013-01-22 Thread cait furness
boot camp is a way to divide your mac into partitions so you can run a copy of
windows on your mac. again, u you will need a copy of windows to run on this
other partition. If you run boot camp, you can't switch between mac and
windows on the fly, or share files between OS's as you can with fusion, so the
sharing isn't as seamless. Some like this option better because it keeps
things more locked, if that makes more sense. I really can't answer in depth
questions about boot camp as I don't use it, but I don't think all aspects of
it are accessible, but I think the boot camp set up is, but the installation of
windows *is not* accessible as it will be with fusion.

hth, and I hope you find what works for you.

 Hi,

I want to do what I think some others on this list do and have the
option of running Windows on my Mac so that for certain tasks I can
switch to Windows and use my screen reader there. I just googled
windows fusion and came up with a site talking about another product,
 Parallels Desktop.

My question is are people here using Windows Fusion, or Parallels
Desktop? Is there anything accessibilitywise to make me choose one
over the other? And when you've actually installed, say, Windows
Fusion, how easy is it to use from a blind person's point of view?
Any other info on setting up Windows Fusion or Parallels Desktop and
using them from a blind perspective most welcome.

 Thanks,
 Catherine
