Re: The preferences in GarageBand

2013-12-25 Thread Andy Collins
Sarah and Phil - I'm just not getting anywhere, and it's not from lack of
effort.

The problem is, without any kind of step by step, instruction, I can keep
playing around, trying different things, but even if something does work, I
don't know how to do it again, as I am trying to many different interacting and
keystroke attempts.

If I knew just how to make a start.

Let's say I want to create a piece of music that had just a piano, saxophone
and bass, how do I go about it? As you said Phil, it isn't at all intuitive. I
haven't even found how to actually record anything; as we have agreed, the r
for record option doesn't work, so if I select a software instrument, and then
have to stop interacting, back out and out until I can get to where the play
and record buttons are that require a VO space to activate, and then have to go
all the way back to the chosen instrument, the recording, if it actually is
working, would be recording all the time elapsed while I am trying to get back
to and play the chosen instrument.

I'm sorry if this is asking too much, but a basic few bullet points on getting
started would probably take much less time than loads of back and forth emails
that give tips in a kind of abstract way that sort of assume some knowledge.

I'm quite good at working things out, but starting in the middle is more
confusing than helpful. I did try listening to Ricardo's tutorials, but they
kept dropping out part way through, and again, it seemed there was something
missing in the demo. I've written to him directly, but haven't heard back yet.

I still need confirmation as to if the preinstalled version of GarageBand

We are talking about the musical keyboard that is opened with command shift K
in GB, not an external MIDI keyboard.
At any rate, the l"r" shortcut is a non-essential. The problem mainly is
getting around in GB for the first time - it isn't intuitive at all and takes
some patience before becoming familiar with the layout and its operation.

Re: The preferences in GarageBand

2013-12-24 Thread Phil Halton
I use GB primarily for audio recording - not so much software synths. it is
highly accessible for audio recording, although a little weird at first.

To load a different synth in your software track, you need to uninteract with
everything and get to the top level. Then open the info pane with command I if
it isn't already open. then, in there, you'll find a list browser that you can
interact with and try out different instruments. GB comes with a bunch of
pre-installed synths, and you don't really need anything more at first until
you get good at using what's already there.

There is a Layout area that contains all your track headers and tracks, along
with some other stuff. you have to uninteract with that layout area in order to
get to the info pane - it will appear at the same level as your record button
etc.

I don't have the exact details in front of me, and am working from memory.
browse around in the info pane and you should find the list browser that
contains the synths.

If you want another audio editing app that seems a little more intuitive to
use, Amadeus Pro is the way to go, although, I can do any audio recording and
editing I want in GB - its just a matter of learning the tricks.

Re: The preferences in GarageBand

2013-12-24 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Hmm. I successfully use gb with out the troubles you are having. and very
successfully I might add for the jingles I had to produce last year. I can vo
space on the prefs tool bar and r works for me when I'm using my piano key
board. Also the app store or software update will dl the instruments and
install them for you. You can even use your apple remote to control it unless
you have the newer macs then forget it as they don't have the remote info read
senser.

Re: The preferences in GarageBand

2013-12-24 Thread Andy Collins
Ok Phil - mouse clicking works in the preferences. Thanks.

I still need confirmation as to if the preinstalled version of GarageBand only
comes with the software piano, and if other instruments need to be downloaded,
and if so, how can I get to where I can instigate the download, and if not, how
do I get them to play in the way I can get the piano to play?

When I first bought this Mac, I'm sure I read on list that GB was accessible
and that listers were using it, but now, apart from your good self, all is
quiet on the GB help front, and if I can't move on from here, would like to
know what others use instead of GB that has good accessability?

Thanks all -

Andy

mouse click the buttons instead of VO space. First though, route mouse to VO.

The preferences in GarageBand

2013-12-23 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

Two things here:

Firstly, when I look at preferences for GB, the general button is selected by
default, and I can't change it. If I click the midi button, or the advanced
button, the focus just stays stuck on the general button.

Secondly, I am finding that the GB app freezes, and I have to do a forced quit
to get out of it. Again, anybody help? It's looking like I'm wasting my time on
this software, and hardly anybody here uses it -
